My Russian isn't great, but I think they are quite pleased...

Peter Collins: Watching Russia defend deep for two hours isn't great for football, but if I'm being honest, watching Spain pass it around in defence isn't great either. They didn't do enough to win the game, and penalties is a good way to split them up.

We're open to suggestions, Alex.

Alex Howard: Have to say after that game (I dislike Spain is a disclaimer), Fifa need to find an alternative solution to penalties. Allows teams to play negative football for 120 minutes and hope for a slice of luck - Russia a prime example

Igor Akinfeev saved two penalties, but still can't get an average of above seven in the player rater.

Spain have been so successful with that style of possession football but there comes a time when you have to get the ball into the strikers.
You have to change it up a bit. Spain got what they deserved.

Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC One
We knew Russia would look for opportunities from set-pieces and defend very well, and that is exactly what they did. The number of times we have seen Spain play stubborn sides like this and break them down with sharp and incisive passes, but today they couldn't break them down.

No matter how many times you practice in training you cannot recreate the atmosphere and the emotions of a shootout like that.

So, potentially none of the so called 'big nations' to play until the final for England. You know what that means? Last-16 defeat to Columbia. Guaranteed.

Russia will meet one of Croatia or Denmark for a place in the World Cup semi-finals. That match will take place in Sochi on Saturday at 19:00 BST.
Remember, this is in England's half of the draw. One of Russia, Croatia, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, England or Colombia will be in the World Cup final. Of those teams, Switzerland are highest-placed in the world rankings.

Cesc Fabregas
Chelsea and Spain midfielder on BBC One
I am speechless because I expected a different game today. I think Spain is a much better side than Russia. Russia had a plan which was to go to penalties and pray, and it paid off for them. Andres Iniesta doesn't deserve to go out like this, in what could be his last game for Spain.
Spain 1-1 Russia (3-4 pens)
Iago Aspas, who took the final spot-kick, took a massive run-up. It just looked like he would miss. What a shambles of a World Cup for Spain. Manager sacked on the eve of the tournament, then a curious, tepid performance here.
