I was a huge fan of Luka Modric before the tournament, but he has confirmed he is right up there with the best of them. When you want someone to control the pace, then he is the man for Croatia, and he did that against England. He has so much vision and awareness and he gives you a bit of everything in that number 10 role. I have loved watching him in this tournament. He is class and I think it is between him and Kylian Mbappe for Player of the Tournament.

What is great about Luka Modric is that a team needs a dictator - someone who can control the pace of the game. He is the man who can do that. It is a huge, huge role.

Croatian World Cup semi-finalist in 1998, Dario Simic speaking to BBC:

"For us this is a big, big thing. We are a small country. It is not easy to become finalists in the World Cup but we deserve to be here.

"We have played some of the best football at this tournament. Luka Modric is the best player of the tournament. N'Golo Kante and Paul Pogba also play very good football. But I have a good feeling for us. Everything is going well for us."

There does seem to be more Croatia fans here than France supporters, but maybe that's because their distinctive shirts are easier to spot. There is definitely a mass of red and white behind one goal, and a lot of chessboard flags at the other end too.

Croatia have come through the easier side of the draw. They are a talented side but France had the harder side and in each game they have got better. They are organised and know how to win football matches.

France forward Kylian Mbappe has been absolutely brilliant in a couple of games but Croatia midfielder Luka Modric has been my player of the tournament because he has delivered in every match he has played.

Modric wants the ball in every situation, always tries to pass it forward, and hardly ever gives it away.

He will win the ball back for you too, and has also come up with a couple of goals. His consistency is exceptional and he is an absolute class act. I don't see a better midfielder in world football.

I have seen Croatia three times during this World Cup and their strength is definitely in the middle of the pitch. That is where they will look to take control of this match.

But we have seen France are efficient, and able to stop teams from playing through them, but they are also very dangerous going forward.

They have been the best team here in Russia, and that's why I am backing them to be world champions.

    Lawro's prediction: 2-0

  11. 'No better environment to get better than in the Premier League'published at 15:23 British Summer Time 15 July 2018

    Jurgen Klinsmann
Former Germany head coach on BBC One

England can be really proud of themselves. Gareth did a wonderful job and do expectations rise? Of course, but there is a solid and very good foundation of young, hungry players but all of them need to improve.

But there is no better environment to get better than being in the Premier League and there is no better league than the Premier League so they will improve.

England won the Under-20s and Under-17s World Cups and they are huge symbols you should be proud of, but you need to keep the players grounded and hungry.

They got scared after scoring against Croatia, they didn’t know what to do. It is very promising but there is still a huge amount of work to do.

I am very pleased with what we have seen from England. When they left the Euros two years ago, they were a laughing stock.

They leave this tournament after a semi-final with thousands of fans cheering the players and the manager at the end of the match. The country has fallen back in love with England, and football again. Plenty to look forward to.

    France

As you were for both sides, no changes from the semi-finals.

For France, it means striker Olivier Giroud keeps his place up front despite not scoring at the World Cup so far.

Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe provide the support.

France XI: Lloris, Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez, Pogba, Kante, Matuidi, Griezmann, Mbappe, Giroud.

    Croatia

Croatia winger Ivan Perisic is passed fit after nursing an injury and missing training on Friday.

Marcelo Brozovic, so impressive alongside Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic against England, keeps his place in the middle of the park.

Croatia XI: Subasic, Vrsaljko, Lovren, Vida, Strinic, Brozovic, Rakitic, Modric, Perisic, Rebic, Mandzukic.

  18. Not loved at home?published at 15:18 British Summer Time 15 July 2018

    France v Croatia (16:00 BST)

Luka Modric, captain and midfield general, is the undoubted star of Croatia's national team.

He has been the official Man of the Match in three of Croatia's six World Cup fixtures.

Even missing a penalty in extra time against Denmark left him unfazed. He calmly slotted home a spot-kick in the subsequent, triumphant shootout.

But plenty of football fans in Croatia have been groaning at the Real Madrid star's feats - or even booing him as a pantomime villain.

    Media caption,

    Schmeichel saves Modric penalty

    Why?

He is at the heart of a corruption scandal which continues to divide Croatia's football fans - even as their national side has reached heights previously unscaled in its short World Cup history.

Travis: Disagree Shearer's assertion that we have the best two teams in the World Cup Final, I'd say that was France and Belgium.

Benny: Come on Croatia...sick of hearing about how good France supposedly are

Richard: I'm backing Croatia today. They have deserved the shot at winning the trophy and given how amazing this World Cup has been a first time winner would only cap it off.
