So, Steven Gerrard agrees a four-year deal to become the new Rangers manager. The 37-year-old former Liverpool captain will take up his new role on 1 June, assisted by former team-mate Gary McAllister.

"It was a no-brainer for me," said Gerrard after being paraded at Ibrox this afternoon.

"There were a lot of different things to think about but from that first phone call I got a special feeling and I knew that Rangers were for me.

"I'm very aware of Rangers, the size of the club, I've watched them from afar and been lucky enough to watch some of the Old Firm games."

"It can do [go badly wrong] but listening to what Steven was saying in his press conference he’s assured them what he wants and he was like that as a player," says former Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam.

"He knows what he wants to do, he was composed and calm and he looks as though he is looking forward to it. It’s a big challenge but one I think he’s relishing.

"There’s going to be an injection of money which is badly needed - there’s not going to be hundreds of millions like the Premier League in England but there’ll be enough for him to bring better quality players in and that’s what it needs.

"His previous career as a player and his authority that he has will help him attract good players who will want to go and play for him which is an added bonus and it’s a massive statement for the club and Scottish football.

"I don’t think he’ll just look to young players, I think he’ll look to experienced players that know the game, who have probably played there or understand what it’s like to play for a big club.

Of Gary McAllister, who was a team-mate of Gerrard's at Liverpool and also played for and managed Leeds and Coventry, the new Rangers boss said: "He's a long-time friend of mine.

"I have huge respect for Gary and he ticks the box where, maybe I'm not the most experienced manager right now, but he's been in the game for a very long time and as a partnership I feel will be very strong.

"He will be a rock and a very big support and as soon as I asked him it was a 'yes' straight away.

"I learned so much from Gary and I couldn't ask for anyone better to take on this challenge with me."

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is looking forward to locking horns with "ultra-professional" Steven Gerrard at Rangers next season.

Gerrard will become the manager at Ibrox this summer, having signed a four-year deal.

The former England captain's 17-year Liverpool career included three seasons working under Rodgers.

"He had incredible quality as a player and that level of professionalism is what made him great," said Rodgers.

"I'm sure he will take those attributes into his management.

"I haven't spoken to him, I left him be when I saw he was linked with it, he will obviously have his own thoughts on it.

"But I am delighted for him because he has obviously had an incredible playing career, wanted to manage, wanted to coach and now he gets the opportunity to do that."

Ben Clarkson: All Gerrard has to do to be considered a success is narrow the huge gulf in quality between Rangers and Celtic and possibly bag a trophy. Nobody expects them to overhaul Celtic immediately, could be a genius move for him.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp: "If Stevie thinks it’s the right moment then I’m sure it is the right moment. If he thinks he’s ready then he’s ready,” Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com in reacting to the news.

"How I know it, Rangers are a big club in a little bit of a difficult moment still but a much better moment than a few years ago. It could be a really good fit, it could be nice, coming closer to Celtic.

“I’m pretty sure Celtic supporters don’t think, ‘Thank God, Steven Gerrard’. They think, ‘Wow, Steven Gerrard’. That can always be a sign.

"Stevie is one of the best midfielders ever. Now he wants to be a manager. He has the passion for football and the knowledge about football. All the rest is to learn; I’m sure he learned a lot in the last year.

"I’m really happy for him to have the opportunity."
