BBC Sport Scotland at Celtic's Lennoxtown training groundCeltic manager Brendan Rodgers says he is "delighted" for Steven Gerrard, ahead of them locking horns in the Scottish Premiership.
"I’m delighted for him. He has obviously had an incredible playing career. He wanted to manage and wanted to coach and obviously he now has the opportunity to do that.
"I’m sure he will be looking forward to his first job and happy that he now enters into my world of coaching and managing.
"He will have an idea in relation of how he wants to work. But certainly as a guy he was ultra professional. He had incredible quality as a player and, like I say, that level of professionalism he had in his career - that’s what made him the great player he was. So, I’m sure he will take those attributes into his management.
"Only over time will you see the identity of his team and how they want to work and how they want to play.”

Ashwin Kumar: No difference between the Rangers job and the Liverpool youth team. At least Gerrard can develop his future players when he eventually becomes a Liverpool manager at Liverpool. But this move will be a big box office hit or utter failure.
Mr H: I think whilst Gerrard is a risky appointment, he’s the right type of risk. A proven winner and leader as a player.

JustinY13: Good luck to Steven G, bold move, talented player, but it's too much too soon for him. Don't want him to be the John Barnes of Celtic. If he can't deliver and the fans turn against him, he'll be out of the door before Christmas.
mclark497: Zidane and Guardiola cut their teeth in the B team and also worked with first team coaches. Not sure why UK ex players think they need perfect job on day one. Missing huge opportunity to work alongside Klopp and learn his trade for a few years then take the right job.
Sito347: When Rafa took the job at Newcastle many thought he had everything to lose but very little to gain. Maybe Gerrard can pull this off as well.

haseeb_hamdule: It is always an inspiration for the players in the dugout when a legend of the game is leading them. However, I don't understand why people take escape to the Scottish league to prove their worth.
L_K_Mc: It’s a risk for both parties: it could set rangers back even further considering Stevie G’s distinct lack of Scottish football knowledge. BUT fair play to him for taking on the challenge as opposed to sitting on the pundit couch.
mrchecketts: As a Celtic fan I'm glad to welcome him and genuinely hope he raises profile of Scotland's top flight and makes Rangers competitive again.
More high profile names in Scotlandpublished at 13:05

Kilmarnock boss Steve Clarke insists the arrival of more high profile names “can only be good for the game in Scotland.”
Clarke worked with Steven Gerrard during his time as a coach at Liverpool, and described the Englishman as a “great player and a really good person.”
The Ayrshire side are unbeaten against Rangers this season, with two victories and a draw, and travel to Ibrox tomorrow.
And Kilmarnock midfielder Gary Dicker believes the crop of high profile managers in the country is “maybe the best it’s been in a long time."

Colin Johnston: As a big Rangers & Liverpool fan, this is a dream
Stewart McLeish: All these "expert" pundits criticising this appointment seem to forget a few things. They have no true knowledge of what's going on behind the scenes. Did a certain Graeme Souness have previous managerial experience prior to taking over at Ibrox. Any appointment is a risk, experienced or not. Good luck to Stevie G. Obviously I hope he is phenomenally successful.
Dorian L'Grass: All joking aside I loved him as a player, and I hope he wins as many titles with The Rangers as he won at Liverpool.
Paul Reilly: As Roy Hodgson said this week: by definition all managers taking their first job have no prior experience. Doesn't mean they will fail. And remember that Graeme Souness had not managed before he went to Rangers. That didn't turn out too badly for them.

MackerOnTheMed: It’s like climbing Mt Everest without sherpas, ropes or oxygen while carrying a bull elephant on your back. What’s the rush to get into management? He’s got time on his side he’s only learning his trade & now jumping into this job. Talk about a baptism of fire! Lunatic.
MartletRob: It's refreshing to see SG starting at the bottom of the ladder at a time where former players expect to step into management at the top level.
SirMoSalah11: A positive move for Rangers and Scottish football, In 3yrs time he'll succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
caygord1980: By virtue of being a very good footballer, he is therefore qualified to run an legendary football club with no experience and questionable tactical and personnel skills? Insulting to Scottish football and fans in general.

Colin Henderson: A bad decision by Rangers/ He is unproven as a manager taking on a club in turmoil with no money. He will be managing in the lower English leagues within a year or back at Liverpool as a coach. It's all about the hype above reality.
Matheson33: A great player for both club and country but Steven Gerrard is taking a leap of faith here. This is not the Rangers of old and could be something of a poisoned chalice. Hope he makes a success of it though. Good luck!

Emile Heskey for England captain: Steven Gerrard was a great player, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'll be a successful manager. Good luck to him either way...he'll need it!
Olly: Bold appointment, good luck to SG, not an easy first job in management!
Dropz73: Interesting appointment. A legend in the game and one of my idols being a Liverpool fan and also Rangers fan. The pull of players will be massive who will want the chance to work and learn from him - he's a winner that's for sure. Good luck Stevie!
'It's a great opportunity' - John Barnespublished at 11:55
11:55"I’m pleased for Steven, because I know he wants to be a manager, and of course if you want to be a manager, the chances of getting a top job in the Premiership for an un-tried manager – those days are gone," says former Celtic boss John Barnes.
"So to be able to go to a club, albeit maybe not in ideal circumstances, because they’re financially unable to compete with Celtic, but of course it shows how much he wants to be a manager.
"I suppose people may then say ‘is it the right job, at the right time?’ But if you want to be a manager, you have to show that passion and commitment, by going to a huge club, but possibly at a time when it’s going to be difficult for him, but he wants an opportunity, and it’s a great opportunity.
