Gabi, who assisted Atletico’s third goal in their 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the 2012 final, scored his first ever Europa League goal tonight. Not a bad time to break your duck.

Real Madrid have just tweeted to congratulate Atletico on winning today.

This is the first time in five years that Real haven't knocked Atletico out of Europe.

That's Fernando Torres' first major trophy for Atletico Madrid (all his previous club success had come with Chelsea).

It is a first ever major success for Antoine Griezmann, who is being strongly linked with Barcelona.

Funnily enough, it's Kevin Gameiro's fourth Europa League in five years. The Frenchman, who was on Atletico's bench today, won three in a row with Sevilla from 2014 to 2016.

A few of you are asking what happens to the Champions League spot for the Europa League winners - since Atletico have already qualified through La Liga.

Well the answer is the third-placed team from Ligue 1 (which could be Marseille if they can overtake Lyon on the final day) go straight into the group stages - instead of the qualifiers.

    Nobody extra qualifies really.

Antoine Griezmann puts a baby - I presume his - in the Europa League trophy and poses for a photo with a woman - I presume his partner/the baby's mother.

Marseille have lost their last three European finals, without scoring a single goal - all in this tournament.

Since the beginning of the 2013-14 season, Spanish clubs have won eight of the nine Champions League and Europa League trophies.

The exception are Manchester United in last season's Europa League.

Real Madrid can make it nine out of 10 if they beat Liverpool in Kiev in 10 days' time.

They have won four out of five Champions Leagues in that time - Barcelona winning the other.

Sevilla won three Europa Leagues in a row before United beat Ajax last year.

Stu: Could we see two European trophies ending up in Madrid this season?

Tony: Not really a contest after 15 minutes

Now that's a nice touch. Gabi gets the trophy (and almost drops it) before handing it to Fernando Torres so they can lift it together.

Torres was Atletico's captain as a teenager before leaving for Liverpool.

Antoine Griezmann gives the Europa League trophy a kiss as he goes past. Fernando Torres is the final player to get his medal - this is his penultimate game for the club.

Here comes Diego Simeone - who is allowed on the pitch now that the game's over. He gets the first medal, German Burgos - who was the man on the touchline - gets the second. And now here are the players.

Atletico Madrid give Marseille's players a guard of honour as they go to get their runners-up medals. Some of the French team's players are still in tears.

It's time for the officials to get their medals - Bjorn Kuipers and the lads. As a linesman you're probably depending on there being a good referee from your country to get big games like this.

Atletico Madrid haven't been eliminated from Europe in a knockout round or lost in a final to anyone except Real Madrid since 2013.

Damian: As widely predicted, Atletico confirm that the Europa League could have been a fitting trophy for the end of Arsene Wenger's great career had they progressed

Colin: Watching the game in a hotel in Crete. Perfect scenery, perfect game. Simeone may not be everyone's cup of tea but he gets the job done

    Marseille's players look distraught.

As well as losing a third Uefa Cup/Europa League final, they miss out on a chance to secure a Champions League place for next season.

They still have a chance but they need to better Lyon's result in Ligue 1's final day on Saturday.
