Klopp wanted Ings to stay at Anfield but respects his situation will not place a prohibitive fee on his head.

Striker Danny Ings is set to leave Liverpool this summer in order to secure first-team football.

Although he still has two seasons left on his contract, the 25-year-old reached an agreement with Jurgen Klopp that will allow him to leave ahead of the new season.

Ings ruptured cruciate ligaments in October 2015, then suffered cartilage damage the following year.

These serious setback restricted him to 14 Premier League appearances over the past three seasons.

He did return for the final two months of this season but despite making substitute appearances in both the quarter and semi-finals of the Champions League, did not make the bench for last month’s final defeat by Real Madrid.

Ings, who has one England cap, has been working with a personal fitness trainer throughout the summer.

"A ridiculous mistake in the Iran – Portugal game! On Portugal's jersey, it says Iraq instead of Iran," one user tweeted along with an image, external.

Another user said many "still do not know the difference between Iran and Iraq", external.

One user was quick to blame American apparel company Nike, which has already been at odds with the Iran team after saying it would not supply them with boots due to a possible violation of US sanctions.

"Regardless of whether this is due to sanctions or a gaffe… this is a major disgrace for this boastful company," the user said, external.

He later accepted his mistake, external after another user pointed it out.

Iranians experienced a full spectrum of emotions last night.

The first feeling was anger - even before a ball was kicked - over a supposed geopolitical faux pas regarding the spelling of their country's name.

As is customary in World Cup matches, each side's kit has the names of the teams playing stitched into the fabric in the vernacular. As such, the jerseys worn by the Portugal team read in block capitals: IRAO / PORTUGAL.

However, many Iranians evidently did not realise that "Iran" is spelled "Irao" in Portuguese, and assumed that it read "IRAQ". Needless to say, confusion and anger ensued on social media.

Two German officials who celebrated their nation's late winner over Sweden by apparently taunting the opposition dug-out will have been banned from pitchside by the German Football Association.

Team media officer Ulrich Voigt and the director of the DFB office for the national team, Georg Behlau will miss Wednesday's match against South Korea.

"The members of the support staff know that they have behaved incorrectly in an emotionally charged situation," the German FA said.

Fifa is conducting it's own investigation into the incident.

  8. England's weak pointpublished at 12:25 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

    Kyle WalkerImage source, Getty

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has highlighted Kyle Walker - deployed as one of three central defenders rather than in his usual right-back role by Gareth Southgate - as England's potential weakpoint at the World Cup.

“He’s not a real defender, and especially not a central defender," said the Frenchman in comments reported by the Telegraph. , external

"He can be subject to defensive mistakes, which he would not pay for when he plays as a right-back.”

Walker gave away a penalty from which Tunisia scored a goal in England's narrow 2-1 win in their first group game.

    The world through its media

Zlatan Ibrahimovic may have retired from playing for Sweden, but that doesn’t mean he’s not ubiquitous on Swedish screens, appearing to front commercials for a wide variety of products.

The meme below is a nod to Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal where a man has to play chess with death. The famous piece of dialogue goes:

    “Who are you?”

    “I am death.”

“Have you come to collect me?”

In a popular meme with actor Bengt Ekeroth’s face exchanged for Zlatan’s, the dialogue goes:

    “Who are you?”

“I am Zlatan. I have come to sell things to you”

Zlatan shared the meme, which led people to wonder if he had a “new-found sense of irony”, but it is unlikely he had anything to do with the meme’s creation.

  12. 'Balls are more important than talent'published at 12:03 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

    Jorge ValdanoImage source, EPA

Former World Cup winner Jorge Valdano, who went on to manage Real Madrid at the end of his playing days, has been outlining where things have gone wrong for Argentina.

"Bit by bit we got further away from the ball, the one thing we loved more than the game itself," he writes in the Guardian., external

"We got further from a style that used to draw us to the stadium, where we longed to shout “olé!” every time we saw someone dribble, trick an opponent, tease them; every time we saw a lightning one-two or some expression of cunning, that astuteness – that was our life.

"A passion for football was overcome by a passion for a team, as if a society that has become ever more individualistic needed something to reconnect it with tribal feeling. Turning clubs into mini-nations constructs an identity, a community that must be defended as a matter of life and death. In the stands violence took over; on the pitch, we said goodbye to the olés and welcomed in a world where huevos– balls – are more important than talent."
