  4. 'We can't aim for draw' - Stonespublished at 11:08 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

John Stones has been interviewed by England's media team (while on an exercise bike) and he's not having suggestions the team should try to finish second in their group in order to get an easier last 16 draw.

"We want to keep that winning run going," he said. "If you're going into a game thinking of getting a draw it will end badly

"You've got to think as winners and whoever we get, we get."

  6. 'Real Madrid tried to prevent me playing'published at 11:02 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

Angel di MariaImage source, Getty Images

Argentina winger Angel di Maria claims that his then club - Real Madrid - attempted to stop him from playing in the 2014 World Cup final against Germany.

Writing in the Players Tribune, he says Argentina officials received a letter from the Spanish giants on the morning of the game., external

"I immediately knew what was happening. Everybody had heard the rumors that Real wanted to sign James Rodríguez after the World Cup, and I knew that they were going to sell me to make room for him," said Di Maria.

"So they didn’t want their asset to be damaged. It was that simple.

"I didn’t even open it. I just ripped it into pieces and said, “Throw it away. The one who decides here is me.”

DI Maria was an unused substitute in the 1-0 defeat.

  10. 'We can expect a thrashing'published at 10:48 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

    SpainImage source, Getty Images

Spain may have finished top of Group B, but not all is well with the 2010 champions.

"As Spain continue in the World Cup, it would be normal for someone to thrash them," writes Roberto Palomar in Marca, external

"It could be Russia, seeing as Morocco could have done so.

"The defensive set up is a joke, starting with David de Gea, who looked shaky and didn't have the confidence to go for balls in his box.

"With the ball, Spain weren't great either.

"Against Morocco, there was plenty of possession as usual but few shots and barely any depth.

"Only Isco provided a light at the end of the tunnel, sometimes joined by Andres Iniesta with Diego Costa chipping in."

Get Involved - Is VAR working?published at 10:46 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

    Text 81111 or tweet #bbcworldcup

Ian Boyce: It's totally spoiling this World Cup some of the penalty decisions have been a joke were talking VAR instead of football!

Alick Howard: Inconsistent and it doesn't remove interpretation.

Ken Harding: A weak or poor ref and it fails. Player attitudes are also at fault. Appeal by player or coach should be auto red. Discipline in footballers has vanished.

Andrew Hall: I think you should have a poll... at the end of the day football wasn’t broken. Let the fans decide!

Mike Bennett: I thought VAR has been highly successful so far (except for last night's game). Even that was down to human error though. If VAR was used properly there wouldn't be any issues.

When you’ve got someone as powerful as Messi player power can tun it around.

But the players aren’t playing for the coach, it doesn’t look like they’re even playing for themselves at the moment.

  14. England driven to successpublished at 10:29 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

England's goal avalanche on Sunday wasn't good news for everyone.

Spare a thought for the delivery staff of Auto Trader, after the firm decided to give away a car for every goal the Three Lions score in Russia.

Suspect they weren't thinking there'd be eight already.

You can imagine the furrowed brows at half-time with England 5-0 up.

    Nigeria v Argentina (19:00 BST)

    Diego MaradonaImage source, Rex

Argentina legend Diego Maradona - who played in four World Cups between 1982 and 1994, lifting the trophy in 1986, - has said that he has only love and respect for Lionel Messi despite the current team's travails., external

"I would like to tell him that he is not guilty of anything, absolutely nothing. I love you as always, I respect you as always," he said on the show he hosts on Telesur in his home country.

Argentina play Nigeria tonight with their hopes of qualification still hanging by a thread.

They will qualify with victory over Nigeria coupled with Iceland failing to defeat Croatia. If Iceland do beat Croatia, then Jorge Sampaoli's side can still qualify if they beat Nigeria by two more goals than Iceland win their game.

If Argentina and Iceland win and finish with identical records their fate will be decided by their disciplinary records and then the drawing of lots. Argentina have picked up three yellow cards and Iceland have none.

  16. Queiroz offered new deal by Iranpublished at 10:20 British Summer Time 26 June 2018

Pooria Jafereh, BBC Persian in Saransk: After a brave performance at the World Cup - beating Morocco and drawing with Portugal - the Iranian FA is offering Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz a six month extension.

Iran's next major tournament is the 2019 Asian Cup in the UAE in January. Iran have not won the continental competition for over four decades despite being the top-ranked team in Asia for most of the last seven years.

They hope former Real Madrid coach Queiroz can guide them to the cup this time around. However, Queiroz himself is looking for a four-year deal that would keep him in place until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
