  1. Is football coming home?published at 11:51 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

Pete, Manchester: Word on the street is it's coming home. At first I was sceptical but then someone literally confirmed to me that it is indeed coming home.

Ed A, London: Vindaloo on repeat. Live text on refresh. Can’t remember the last time I thought about anything else. Nervous doesn’t even begin to cover it. Bring it home lads.

Anthony, Birmingham: Re Pete Armstrong, I am pretty sure the wave of “it’s coming home” comments isn’t down to arrogance. How can it be? What have we to be arrogant about? I’m also pretty sure there is a growing sense of hope, optimism and belief that this young England team could go far in this World Cup. I am cautiously optimistic and tonight will tell us a lot about this team's character and belief in themselves. Win tonight then we can believe it might be coming home.

  2. What is success for England?published at 11:48 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

Ben, Hove: I don't think it's fair to change our view of what success is during the tournament just because of other team's results. Quarter finals still a massive step forward for me.

Rob, Italy: Before the Columbia game we have beaten one of the worst teams (Panama) and just beaten another weak team (Tunisia) then we lost a 'Must-Lose Game' to Belgium who are one of the best teams. This is all meaningless and mediocre...but the effort and approach of the team is just immense compared to every England World Cup group game during this Millennium. If we win today then football will be coming home no matter what happens beyond that.

Tony, Stockport: Given our track record at major championships, I'm not entirely sure we should be listening to Alan Shearer's advice on penalties; perhaps we should ask the Germans as they've nothing left to do?

  4. '30 million people are watching'published at 11:44 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    Gary Lineker
    Ex-England striker and BBC presenter

Bobby Robson walked over to us (during Italia '90) and said "don't let us down, there are 30 million people watching back home."

It's totally different to a normal penalty because you have to walk 50 yards. You've got to practice penalties, it's mad that we don't practice them.

There's nothing you can say to someone who's missed a penalty, nothing. Other than (joking) 'you prat, you let us down'.

And here's some more advice from someone who has scored World Cup penalties for England...

  6. Pick England's penalty takerspublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

So you've had your say on who should play for England tonight, but who should take penalties if if goes to a shootout? Have a look at the stats and pick your five takers here

  7. What threat do Colombia pose?published at 11:38 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

I'd almost forgot there is another team playing tonight! Here's a reminder of the threat Colombia pose

  8. 'England outnumbered'published at 11:33 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Moscow

No huge surprise - unless I'm just looking in the wrong places - but it seems the yellow shirts of Colombia vastly outnumber the white of England in and around the streets of Moscow on this cloudy, grey day and there is every chance that contrasting colour scheme will be repeated in the Otkrytie Arena tonight.

Colombia's fans have descended on Russia in their thousands at this World Cup.

  10. Is football coming home?published at 11:29 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    #bbcworldcup or text on 81111

Chris S, Tamworth: People need to get behind the team tonight no matter what happens this is a young team with bags of potential and if we are patient we will win and go far in this World Cup , 2-1 tonight C'MON ENGLAND!!

Ben, London: Woke up twice last night thinking about the football. Got butterflies in my stomach at work and it's not even midday.

Paul: Just arrived in Bangkok. Serious jet lag. Huge negotiation starts at 7am tomorrow. England's game starts at 1am. See it through, cheer the boys on or go into a 24 hour series of meetings with no shut eye for 36 hours. Yep. We know the answer!

  11. Pick your own teampublished at 11:25 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    Colombia v England (19:00 BST)

Grant: Is it just me, or does the team shown at 11:02am lack the required number of defenders? Very attacking but not that solid at the back or with midfielders who can tackle? More balance now hopefully.

That team was England's for the Euro 96 semi-final. But who should Gareth Southgate (number 6 in that picture) pick tonight? You can pick your own team right here

  12. What is success for England?published at 11:19 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    #bbcworldcup or text on 81111

Paddy, Chiswick: Whatever happens this evening, I'd love to see Southgate stay as England manager for the future. This is the start of a beautiful football project.

Michael: Before the tournament it was all "they're a young team no pressure enjoy it lads". But ever since Germany's defeat everyone expects England to make the semis minimum. Give them a chance. One game a time.

Pete Armstrong, Edinburgh: Won two knockout games since 1990 and now everyone saying "it's coming home". Get a grip - no wonder all the world hate us after such arrogance.

  13. What is success for England?published at 11:16 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    #bbcworldcup or text on 81111

Don't mean to put a downer on proceedings but let's just imagine that England lose tonight.

I know, after all this excitement, we'd be gutted. But before the tournament, didn't we say there were no expectations and we'd be happy just to get out of the group?

Sorry to bring some perspective and balance to the debate but what do you think would represent success for England at this summer's World Cup?

Mark, Northampton: This is a public service announcement. It's coming home! That is all.

James & Pete, Nuneaton: Sat in the office, England playlist on. Far too excited for tonight's game.

Jordan: Don't understand why people are telling everyone to stop with the "it's coming home" etc. It's the first time in a long while since we've had faith in our team. Yes we might go out, but let's be happy while we can!

    Speaking of substitutions and penalties...

Daz, Derby: Stuart Pearce missed his penalty in Italia 90 and got redemption in Euro 96. Is tonight the night Southgate subs himself on, and pops the winning penalty top bin?

  17. 'It's fatal to change your mind'published at 10:57 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

Alan Shearer shares his advice for penalty shootout glory:

From the halfway line to the penalty spot is the longest walk in the world.

It's such a pressurised, nervous situation. You just don't want to let anyone down.

The worst thing you can do with a penalty is change you mind.

I said to David Batty before he took his penalty [against Argentina in France 1998] "where are you going to put it" and he said "I don't know, what do you think?"

I said "if you're in any doubt, smash it straight down the middle as hard as you can."

Afterwards I asked him what happened and he said "I don't know, I just changed my mind."

    It's fatal doing that.

But, if it does go to penalties, here's some handy tips from BBC pundit Alan Shearer...

  19. 'It could be a high-scoring game'published at 10:53 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    Colombia v England (19:00 BST)

    Terry Butcher
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

I don't see it going to penalties, I see it being a (possibly) high-scoring game.

England have shown glimpses of being together, not for the whole 90 minutes but I've been encouraged by their attitude, passing and finishing.

Everyone keeps talking up Colombia but it's a new England and a great opportunity.

In knockout stage football, games tend to be tight affairs, and last night's first half was just that. However, the second half was a thriller. What do you expect tonight?
