Fraser Maltman: Hibs being 2-1 down to Rangers before scoring two in the last 10 minutes (the winner in 90+2) to win our first Scottish Cup since 1902.

Derek Kennington: Everton v Man utd 4-4 draw in 2012 is not only one of the best games I've ever seen but was a great comeback from 4-2 down.

Juan C Novoa: Bit of a trip down memory lane, but in Chile '62 Colombia came back from 0-4 to draw against the mighty Soviet Union of Lev Yashin and Co., including a goal straight from a corner kick.

  2. Neymar, love him or hate him?published at 09:20 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    #bbcworldcup or text on 81111

Tom Crowley: If Neymar (or any other player) is in enough pain to writhe around on the floor like that, they should be deemed unfit to continue the match and made to leave the pitch.

Nick Clayton: Worth mentioning his classless comments after the game just about sum him up. I've also seen him fire the ball at the back of an opposition player after losing with Brazil. He needs to be hit hard by referees or he won't change.

And this I'd love to see!

Daniel Waschilowski: Neymar got stepped on unfairly he says? People get stepped on unfairly every day on the tube. Imagine the mayhem if all acted like him then.

The Mexican national team even took to Twitter, external to thank their supporters.

From its official @miseleccionmx account, the tweet read: “To all of you devoted fans for being with us every step of the way, for making us feel at home thousands of miles away from our Mexico. #NadaNosDetiene [NothingStopsUs] to rise up and continue walking with our heads held high. Thank you for never stopping to believe!”

As for Mexico, sports paper Cancha, external called defeat to Brazil a “shattered dream”.

“The team had a hard time stopping the powerful attacks by Brazil and it was only thanks to the presence of the goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa that the Mexicans were able to maintain until the end the illusion of a draw,” read the report.

Sports paper Record, external said that after the Mexican defeat, the team’s Colombian manager Juan Carlos Osorio “could be living his last days leading the team”.

Neil, Notts: Simple question: would you want to see your kids rolling around like Neymar on a Saturday morning, or would you tell them to stop embarrassing themselves (and you) and get on with it? Then why should it be different for the best players in the world, to whom those same kids are looking for their inspiration?

David P: Neymar's behaviour was ridiculous but it's not just him, there are so many in the Brazilian (think back to Rivaldo in 2002) and in other teams that behave in the same way.

Danyaaluddin: Reading being 4-0 up against Arsenal after 35 minutes. Full time score: Reading 5-7 Arsenal.

Marcus Moore: Cheltenham away at Rushden 1999. One nil down on 90 mins, won 2-1. As good as sealed our conference title!

Bone Bones: How about Italy 1-0 down to Nigeria in the round of 16 of the 1994 world cup in the 88th minute and going home until 'Il Divino Codino' Roberto Baggio lashed home a goal to go to extra time and then another to win it for Italy.

  7. Is football coming home?published at 08:58 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

But enough about Neymar for the time being. Here's a little teaser for what's to come later, and the question on everyone's lips, 'is football coming home?'

So, where do you stand on the 'It's-coming-home-ometer'? (Hhmm, can't see that catching on. Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it?)

  8. 'Brazil is no Germany'published at 08:54 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    BBC Monitoring
    The world through its media

Back in Brazil, daily newspaper Correio Braziliense, external published a taunting headline “No, Mexico, Brazil is not Germany,” which appeared to seek to rub salt into the wounds of Mexico’s defeat.

Addressing the Mexicans, the story added: “Never confuse a four-time champion with a five-time champion. Mexico thought it would be possible to repeat against Brazil their victory over the Germans in their opening game.”

Sporting newspaper Lance, external said Neymar’s performance was a statement of intent.

“While other stars go home, Neymar decides it and advances.” it headlined.

“While Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo said goodbye to the World Cup in the knockout stage, the number 10 of the Team was the main architect of the victory over Mexico, with a goal and a good performance,” Lance added.

And leading daily Folha de Sao Paulo, external agreed: “Neymar did what Messi and Ronaldo could not do.”

Danny, Bath: One of the best fightbacks has to have been Liverpool in 2005 Champions League Final

Anon: Tranmere (0) v Southampton (3). Half time in FA Cup. Feb 2001. Aldridge team talk inspired 4-3 win and then face Liverpool in the next round. Magic.

Anon: Got to give loads of credit to Belgium, I don't think England would have the resilience to come back from 2-0 down.

Many will be unconvinced by Neymar's explanation though

Hicks, Cardiff: Putting aside the question of whether Neymar was play acting (which he definitely was), the question is what should be the punishment for such theatrics? Yellow card maybe? Would love to see referees take a harder stance on this in any case. Large amount of games in World Cup have seen repeated stoppage of play from players not getting up off the floor when they are fine.

Sam Maayan: Fair point if it was in isolation but he's done it 3 or 4 times a game every game so far this tournament, so the argument doesn't really stack up I'm afraid!

Vincenzo Re: Typical of arrogant footballers. He thinks he is so good that only by being fouled can he lose possession. By "crying wolf" he risks getting genuine decisions in his (and his team's) favour. No sympathy.

  11. 'I want it to be Brazil's cup'published at 08:41 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    BBC Monitoring
    The world through its media

Also on Globoesporte.com, external, Neymar defended himself from criticism that he may have overreacted by squirming in apparent agony after a Mexican player seemed to step on him.

"It’s complicated. It’s not something I can control. I just feel the pain," he said. "I got stepped on unfairly, I think it was off the ball, outside the game. I don’t think it should be done. But, that’s the thing, they [the Mexicans] talked too much before the game, and now they’re going home,"

On being named man of the match, he added: "I do not want this to be Neymar's cup, I want it to be Brazil's cup."

Love him or hate him, Neymar is still revered back home, and here's what the Brazilian media had to say after yesterday's win, via BBC Monitoring.

While some outlets questioned his dramatic on-pitch writhing after he was stepped on by an opponent, pundits noted that he was at least still in the competition, unlike other footballing giants.

“Neymar decides it, maintains the script against Mexico and carries Brazil into the quarter-finals,” reads the headline on the GloboEsporte website., external

  13. Sympathy for Japan?published at 08:26 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

    #bbcworldcup or text on 81111

After trying to keep it tight in the first half, they went out and tried to win the game early in the second but couldn't quite hold on. Did you feel sorry for them? Some didn't after the way they played out their final group game against Poland, knowing they'd go through on yellow cards (of all things).

Anon: The 2nd half of Belgium v Japan was the best 45 mins of the World Cup so far.......got to feel for Japan although I still hadn't totally forgiven them for the way they closed out the Poland game.

    Here's a reminder...

Here's one of the Neymar lovers sympathising with the Brazil forward (remember to include your name folks)

Anon: People are forgetting that Neymar's recovering from surgery on the specific foot that got stood on, he may have over reacted but Layun knew exactly where to hurt him most.

  16. An over-reaction?published at 08:10 British Summer Time 3 July 2018

But here's why many hate Neymar too. Was he targeted by Mexico? Was it an over-reaction? It seems everyone has a different opinion on the world's most expensive player.

It also spared Belgium a repeat of their Euro 2016 upset by Wales and booked a quarter-final tie against Brazil on Friday in Kazan. Brazil are many people's favourites to win the World Cup but Kevin de Bruyne has his eyes on the final.
