Asked about Raheem Sterling's performance, Gareth Southgate told BBC Radio 5 live: "I thought he was very bright and his movement caused problems. Him dropping deep and collecting the ball meant we were able to flood the midfield so I was happy with his performance.
On Sterling's booking for simulation, Southgate added: "I haven't looked at the incident but I thought he worked really hard for us and his counter attacking was a real problem for the opposition.
Southgate on Jordan Pickford: "I think there was a bit of a statement with the selection of Jordan today. I thought his decision making was good although he was rarely tested."
What a hit.
Austria have levelled in the second half against Germany through Martin Hinteregger's brilliant volley at the back post from David Alaba's corner. It's 1-1 in Klagenfurt.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Gareth Southgate said: "I thought it was an exciting game. I was really pleased with the first-half. We used the ball well and we were a threat. I liked the interchange of movement and passing between our front four. We were then able to win the ball back with our pressing. Second-half we were slow to start and it took us a little while to adjust to them changing shape. What it created was a great atmosphere behind our goal for us to defend properly and manage the game which was important."
Asked about Gary Cahill's goal-scoring return to the side, Southgate said: "Gary is deservedly back in the squad with the way he finished the season with Chelsea. It was a great header and we have been working on set-plays.I thought Kieran Trippier's ball in was brilliant."

The goals have been brought in on the Wembley pitch and some England players are playing a 5-a-side game with what looks like defence against attack.

England boss Gareth Southgate tells ITV: "I think we played really well, with the ball especially. Far more good situations than in recent games. We were deservedly two goals up in the first half. The period leading up to their goal, they changed their system and we took some time to adjust. But after that we dealt with it well. It was a decent exercise for us to adjust to that.
"The front four, some of the movement and interplay, we looked a threat with plenty of pace. Dele [Alli] and Jesse [Lingard] made unselfish runs. Some slightly better decision making or quality and we would have scored more."

Kris: Well that was very much a ‘bleh’ kind of performance... Would have liked to have seen Vardy get on, could use his pace making runs in behind
Rachel: No alarms, injuries or embarrassments. Job done!
Dave: Expectations suitably lowered for the upcoming World Cup watching England tonight. Second half was a yawn fest

England captain Harry Kane tells ITV: "It was a good win against a tough side. We were excellent in the first half and created a lot of chances.
"Second half they scored and it puts the pressure on but we got back into it an kept the ball and came back well. l feel at my best. It was great to score - it's always nice for a striker and now I'm looking forward to the game on Thursday."
England defender Gary Cahill: "If you have the opportunity to play you can show what you do, at club level, and I finished the season strong and am glad to be in the squad.
"The first half we felt comfortable, moved the ball quick and dominated but a bit of concentration early in the second half let us down. After 10 mins we got to grips with their shape and managed the game well."

I thought England played very well in the first-half against a poor Nigeria side. But the visitors made their changes in the second-half and made a game of it. I don't think we got a lot of answers today though because Nigeria just lied down in the first period and let England do what they want.

Adam: Loftus-Cheek offers so much more going forward than Henderson or Dier. Has to start.
Anon: Get a lead, stop playing, invite pressure. Classic England. We play best when we're behind, truth be told.
Jim: Do not understand how Welbeck is in the team tbh. What has he done this season to merit his place?
