No breakthrough yet at The Hawthorns and Sammy Ameobi has a moment to make his eyes water in a collision with Kieran Gibbs.

GOAL: Millwall 1-0 Middlesbroughpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

    Aiden O'Brien (12 mins)

And just like that, Millwall have the lead. That man Aiden O'Brien in the action again to put Neil Harris' side ahead.

Lee Gregory is the provider with a lovely square pass on to O'Brien's run into the area for the opener.

    Millwall 0-0 Middlesbrough

No goals in the opening 10 minutes at The Den where the hosts have started the brighter.

Aiden O'Brien almost gets on the end of a searching ball from George Saville but Ryan Shotton is there to head behind. Darren Randolph clings on to the resulting corner.

League One and League Two update

Ludicrously early, Peterborough take the lead against Bristol Rovers in League One with just a minute gone, Matt Godden heading home at the back post.

Crewe are also ahead against Morecembe, with Charlie Kirk scoring the first League Two goal of the season.

On their first game in League Two following relegation last season, MK Dons lead at Oldham thanks to a Kieran Agard penalty.

    Gwion Edwards (5 mins)

What a start for new Ipswich boss Paul Hurst and Ipswich Town!

Beautiful floated cross from Freddie Sears from the left and former Peterborough man Edwards was there to meet it at pace and head home.

  11. Edwards back for Plymouth after cancer all-clearpublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

    Walsall 0-0 Plymouth

A wonderful piece of team news from Walsall, where Plymouth Argyle have centre-back Ryan Edwards back in their starting line-up.

Edwards was treated for testicular cancer last season, forcing him to miss the final few months of the season.

    Welcome back, Ryan.

The two clubs have been negotiating over the Venezuelan and a deal could be concluded over the weekend.

Magpies boss Rafael Benitez has been desperate to strengthen his squad and feels Rondon can give him added firepower.

Rondon was not included in West Brom’s squad for their Championship game against Bolton at The Hawthorns today.

    Exeter v Carlisle (15:00 BST)

Paul Tisdale (left) and Matt TaylorImage source, Rex Features

For the previous 12 seasons one thing has been a constant in Devon - Paul Tisdale in the Exeter Cuty dugout.

Not so this summer. The EFL's longest-serving boss left the club for League Two rivals MK Dons in May after City's fans served notice on his contract almost two years ago, so the Grecians begin the season with a new coaching team in place.

Former City skipper Matt Taylor has been promoted from Under-23 manager and will make his bow as a first-team boss at home to Carlisle United in League Two.

With a new skipper in Jake Taylor (no relation) after previous captain Jordan Moore-Taylor left to join Tisdale in Milton Keynes, there seems to be an optimistic air around St James Park.

Sorry, an awful play on some Eminem lyrics there.

But after six years in the National League, Macclesfield return to the EFL today with a trip to a new-look Swindon Town side who are aiming for promotion.

Mark Yates has taken over at the Moss Rose after John Askey left for Shrewsbury Town, having led his beloved Macc back to the fourth tier.

Can experienced lower-league boss Yates keep Macclesfield's upward trajectory going? Let us know using #bbcefl on social media.

    Accrington v Gillingham (15:00 BST)

Exactly. Well, quite a lot more people know who they are now than did back in the days of that milk advert.

John Coleman's side won League Two last season - their greatest-ever achievement - and now play in the third tier of English football for the first time.

Owner Andy Holt had a famous Twitter ding-dong with former England player and Salford City co-owner Gary Neville last month over the amount of money his National League side were spending.

Staying up in League One for Stanley may well be seen as an achievement greater than anything the well-backed Salford can do this season.

Joey Barton: Fleetwood Town boss compares football career to a party

    Footballer. Philosopher. Gambler. Manager?

Joey Barton's been called many things in his time (not all of them broadcastable), but for the first time this afternoon he'll be called a manager.

The 35-year-old begins life as the boss of Fleetwood Town at home against AFC Wimbledon in League One.

Can the former Manchester City, Newcastle and one-time England midfielder inspire Fleetwood to success? Let us know using #bbcefl on social media.

  20. How will Rotherham fare this season?published at 14:53 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

Brentford v Rotherham United (15:00 BST)

Paul Warne RotherhamImage source, Getty Images

Newly-promoted Rotherham travel to Griffin Park for their first game back in the Championship since relegation in 2016-17.

Paul Warne's side secured their return to the second tier via the play-offs last May but will be keen to break their opening day duck this afternoon: the South Yorkshire side haven't got off to a winning start in a league campaign since 2011-12.

It's been even longer since they've won away from home on the opening day of a league season - the last time they did that was in 2002, when they thrashed Millwall 6-0.

When we asked our reporters to predict the final Championship table, 20 of our 23 journalists tipped the Millers for the drop.

But it's worth noting the three of the teams promoted from League One in 2016-17 - Sheffield United, Bolton Wanderers and Millwall - all went on to survive last season.
