  1. YELLOW CARDpublished at 37 mins

    Everton 2-0 Southampton

Richarlison with some exceptional skill as he flicks the ball over James Ward-Prowse and controls with a deft touch.

A few moments later, Oriol Romeu lets the Brazilian know what he makes of that. Steaming in with no intent to play the ball, he is the third Southampton man in the book now.

  2. CHANCE!published at 34 mins

    Everton 2-0 Southampton

This could get ugly - two goals behind in just over half an hour - but Southampton are still battling. Idrissa Gueye plays a pass short and James Ward-Prowse steals in, wins a corner.

Danny Ings rises nicely to meet his cross, but glances his header too wide of the far stick, it spins away.

  3. goal

GOAL - Everton 2-0 Southamptonpublished at 32 mins

    Richarlison

What a start this young man is making. It's his third goal in just his second Everton appearance.

Richarlison rises brilliantly in the box to meet Theo Walcott's cross from the right. Alex McCarthy has no chance - the header is sent back across him with all the power of the centre and then some.

    Everton 1-0 Southampton

Yeah, Richarlison is fine. He's chasing down the Southampton defender's now. About 15 minutes ago you didn't feel there was much on offer for the away side here, but they've created a few chances.

  5. Postpublished at 29 mins

    Everton 1-0 Southampton

Danny Ings again - free up front to latch onto a long ball. Charlie Austin is on the overlap, Jordan Pickford comes out to smother and gets a touch on the ball as Austin falls in the box. No pen says the ref.

Down the other end - before Southampton broke - Richarlison fell badly and looked to have damaged himself but he is back up now and should be alright.

Several sharp intakes of breath there for the home fans.

  6. GREAT SAVEpublished at 26 mins

    Everton 1-0 Southampton

    Just sensational.

First it's a terrible spill from Jordan Pickford - with Gareth Southgate in the stands - from Cedric Soare's long-range drive. It swirls, but Pickford lets it drop straight out to Danny Ings, about five yards out with the goal gaping.

PIckford though, launches himself at the striker, Peter Schmeichel style for the 21st century, and somehow manages to palm the ball up onto the bar and away. Outrageous stop, but I think the flag was up for offside in any case.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 24 mins

    Everton 1-0 Southampton

Morgan Schneiderlin looks to have a bit of a problem here. He's having to come off - I'm not totally sure what kind of injury he's picked up. He's walking off without assistance, as Tom Davies comes on to replace him

  8. Postpublished at 22 mins

    Everton 1-0 Southampton

He can't quite get it right this finish - it's a hard one to be fair. Scampering on to a Jack Stephens ball with lovely weight, Danny Ings hits an off-balance effort over the bar first time, from a tight angle. Better signs though for the away side.

J.O. Smithy: Theo Walcott, when given his chances, is still a very decent player - as he has proven. Everton look good.

  10. 'Well executed set play.'published at 15:19 British Summer Time 18 August 2018

We saw how important set plays were in the World Cup. Everton have scored a well-worked one, defenders think it is going in the box but they play it short. Well executed set play.

They come forward again, Everton totally on top here. Another deep Gylfi Sigurdsson free-kick finds Michael Keane again with space to attack in the box, and his header is once more easily fielded by Alex McCarthy. Wesley Hoedt was booked for the foul.

  14. goal

GOAL - Everton 1-0 Southamptonpublished at 15 mins

    Theo Walcott

Lovely goal. The first under Marco Silva at home is straight off the training ground. Leighton Baines plays the free-kick short to Morgan Schneiderlin on the edge of the box, the Frenchman slips in Theo Walcott first time, and he dinks a finish beyond Alex McCarty. Clever stuff.

  16. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Everton 0-0 Southampton

Great defensive work from Richarlison to cover back and deny Cedric Soares space down the right wing after a clever lay-off from Danny Ings. He's working hard the former Liverpool man.

Everton have a throw deep in their own turf but Southampton press high and force Leighton Baines into a rushed clearance.

  17. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Everton 0-0 Southampton

Everton have been on top in these opening stages, but that was a let-off.

  18. CHANCE!published at 10 mins

    Everton 0-0 Southampton

Idrissa Gueye hauls down Nathan Redmond - the winger was galloping away from him and Seamus Coleman. Too early for a yellow the reasoning?

James Ward-Prowse lifts the free-kick towards the box, Charlie Austin finds space behind the back line but the striker can't direct his free header on target. A good sight of goal - he ought to have done better.

  19. Postpublished at 8 mins

Gylfi Sigurdsson - with his third excellent delivery in as many minutes - picks out Idrissa Gueye with a deep corner, the Senegal midfielder reaching it first time on the volley a la Paul Scholes, but blocked by a red and white shirt on the edge of the box.

  20. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Everton 0-0 Southampton

Another Sigurdsson free-kick from deep, another fairly tame header on target that Alex McCarthy scoops up. Cenk Tosun rising this time. It's a lively start from the home side.
