  1. CHANCE!published at 5 mins

    Everton 0-0 Southampton

Very tidy claim from Jordan Pickford, who is quick to pump the ball up towards Gilfi Sigurdsson as Everton look to break. Oriol Romeu gives away a free-kick with a nudge in the back.

Sigurdsson drifts in a delivery from deep, Michael Keane rises to meet it and Alex McCarthy grabs his header across goal with ease.

    Everton 0-0 Southampton

It looks a lovely afternoon for this actually - zippy passes in the sun as both sides feel their way in. Theo Walcott is slightly off the pace and lets his marker in to intercept, before James Ward-Prowse fires a through ball too long and into Jordan Pickford territory.

Saints work it back up the park, Charlie Austin has space to turn and shoot and wins a corner.

"Games at Goodison are always difficult for opposition teams."

The Everton fans will appreciate the football that new boss Marco Silva tries to play and there will be a great atmosphere for his first home game in charge - there always is at Goodison Park, no matter how good the team are.

    Prediction: 2-0

    • Everton are unbeaten in their last 13 home league games against Southampton, winning nine and drawing four.

    • Saints have scored just seven goals during that run, failing to score more than once.

    • Southampton's 2-0 win at Goodison Park in November 1997 is their only victory in 19 Premier League games there.

    • However, Everton have won only one of their last five Premier League encounters with Saints (D2, L2).

Summer signings Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes and Bernard are all still to come into this Everton team as well of course.

Mina has a minor foot problem, Andre Gomes has a hamstring injury and Bernard is not quite fit enough to make the squad still seemingly. Very good on paper.

Everton fans were understandably enthused with what they saw in Marco Silva's first game in charge, with the Toffees showing positivity and purpose even after going down to 10 men. Throw Richarlison's impressive debut and the rest of their summer transfer business into the mix and there's likely to be a level of optimism that hasn't been felt around Goodison Park for quite a while.

Southampton were disorganised and disjointed to start off with in their season opener, but looked much better after Mark Hughes made changes to both formation and personnel. The introduction of Danny Ings was a major factor in their improvement and having only just left Liverpool he could well make his first Saints start on Merseyside.

After an adventurous opening 2-2 draw at Wolves, Everton are back at Goodison Park for Marco Silva's first competitive home match as Toffees boss.

People are excited - Richarlison is another part of the reason why. We'll soon see what Silva's side can achieve with 11 men on the pitch instead of just 10.

Southampton travel up on the back of a frustrating goalless start at home to Burnley - Danny Ings was a late introduction but the striker couldn't turn a tight match in their favour.

Will the former Liverpool forward have a bigger say today?
