    England 0-0 Spain

Spain get a free-kick and pump it into the box from the left flank.

This really is a new Spain we are seeing.

Little Iago Aspas somehow manages to win the header, but it is easy for England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to collect.

Last time I watched England, I was in Moscow. Tears were shed from both me and my son (12). Tonight's atmosphere seems like a testimonial celebration of support from all those that couldn't make it to Russia. Would love a win.

Lots of pantomime booing of Sergio Ramos already. Do you think he actually cares? Not sure he is the caring sort in a football context.

Would imagine Ramos is more likely to be rattled by people not booing him. Hardly looking like a broken man so far.

England working the ball well, pushing Spain on the back foot but Joe Gomez's mis-placed pass allows the visitors a spell of possession.

Tell you what, they are looking to get the ball forward much quicker than we have seen in the past few years.

No tiki-taka here for Luis Enrique's boys, thankfully.

It's Sergio Ramos who plays a brilliant long ball forward towards Thiago Alcantara who gets in behind, but just a bit too early and is flagged offside.

Boos because of what happened in the Champions League final? Deary me.

England? They've got a 26% chance of winning the group.

That should shoot up if Gareth Southgate's side win today.

  14. Players getting game time - the biggest threat to future?published at 19:34 British Summer Time 8 September 2018

From the outside, England's international future appears bright.

In the past 15 months, the country's youth teams - ranging from under-17 to under-21 - have claimed two World Cups, a European Championship and a third successive Toulon Tournament, with the protagonists of these sides some of the most sought-after young players in Europe.

In Russia this summer, the senior side came as close to winning the World Cup as at any time in the past 28 years, utilising a squad with the tournament's joint average youngest age.

However, in the offices of St George's Park, there is justifiable concern at what is seen as a growing threat to sustaining this success.

"Our pool [of players] is getting smaller and smaller," said England boss Gareth Southgate.

    England

England boss Gareth Southgate speaking to Sky Sports: "It is good for the players to feel the warmth of the reception but we are really focused on what happens next. We have a really tough test ahead of us."

On starting Joe Gomez: "Joe Gomez is a young player we think a lot of and we want to have a look at him in a good quality game and this is an opportunity to do it. This is a really good test. Everybody knows we have some important fixtures over the next few months and we want to have a look at a few different things. Kyle Walker will play on Tuesday."

On Luke Shaw: "Luke Shaw brings the balance of a natural left footer, we are looking to that as an outlet to drive us forward. Ashley Young did a brilliant job for us in the summer but is a right footer and tends to check back in those areas of the pitch."

On what he wants from this game: "It is all about performance. We have taken a lot of belief from the performances in the summer but we still have to improve. The age of the team and the hunger of the team has to come through."

Goonerama‏: It's not a vintage Spain team but let's be honest, a midfield with Busquets, Thiago Alcantara and Isco should run rings round England. Trying to control midfield against technically superior players was England's weak spot at the World Cup. We'll see though!

    Chris Waddle
    Ex-England winger

England impressed at the World Cup in reaching the semi-finals but despite the positives there is still a problem in midfield, where we haven't produced a game-changer since Paul Gascoigne in 1996.

You need players who can make a difference by themselves - a maverick, if you like. They might have defensive faults and they might take risks which people don't like, but I just think these off-the-cuff players are what we need.
