More from England manager Gareth Southgate: "I am really pleased for Marcus Rashford. we know who exciting he is, he will be a top player. He has a super mentality, some of his performances have been really good but to finish with two goals is good for him.

“Ben Chilwell is playing well for Leicester and pushing for a place in the squad. We have given a lot of debuts to young players in the last 12 months and he has to keep going at club level."

England manager Gareth Southgate tells Sky Sports: "There was a consequence of a lot of different things, we had a tactical problem to sort out and so many lads playing their first 45 minutes of the season. It was a tall order to ask them to play against an excellent Switzerland side, they kept the ball well and we had to chase too much. There was plenty of room for improvement.

"We did not get hold of their pivot, Granit Xhaka was always available and Xherdan Shaqiri was dropping in to problem areas. We altered the shape in the second half, got the defence higher up and kept the ball better.

"The players were trying to sort things out for themselves before I got into changing room at half time and we had to correct things an challenge them. It was an important night to finish well. We new it would be difficult, the players have given everything this week. Two tough tests and in the end a good result tonight. We arguably deserved a draw against Spain on Saturday.

"We encourage and expect that, it is important the players have a view, they are intelligent footballers. We have a demanding environment."

England goalscorer Marcus Rashford tells Sky Sports: "The last four or five games have been tough. Today was no different and it was hard to press in the first half. In moments like that, you feel you don't have the ball for long spells, but you have to understand it isn't hurting you."

On his goal: "From that position it was all about about the contact on the ball, and it makes it easier with a delivery like that from Kyle Walker."

England defender Danny Rose has told BBC Radio 5 live that the first half appearance against Switzerland was "embarrassing".

"We could have been two or three nil down at half time. It's great we can all shout at each other and tell each other to improve like we did. In the end, we are over the moon to keep a clean sheet and get back to winning ways.

"The morale we have set within the squad is fantastic and we have taken off where we left off in the summer. We had a really difficult game against Spain at the weekend, when we were unlucky not to come away with a point. Tonight, we have made nine changes and you have to take everything into account. The manager is glad we have dug it out and secured the win."

  7. 'Young players will get a chance'published at 22:23 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    Michael O'NeillImage source, reu

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill on Sky Sports: "I was delighted for Gavin Whyte. A great start for him. He's made an impact in training and it couldn't go any better for him.

"I've watched him for a number of years now and you saw a player with real talent. He's stronger and quicker and his talent was never in question.

"We've had to work hard on where we get our players from. Young players will get a chance. They've given a wee bit of freshness to the squad, it's good for he experienced players when they see the young players come in.

"It's good to keep a clean sheet as well as score the three goals. At times we weren't as good tonight as we were on Saturday.

"This is a group of players we'll go with. We still have players who need to pay more regularly for their clubs. It amazes me Stuart Dallas isn't playing more for his club. We just have to hope when the players come they're ready for international football."

"I was nervous and excited and it was good to get on.

"Manager Claude Puel has given me a lot of faith and stuck by me. I have started the season well and have a lot to thank him for.

"I was more nervous than weekend and all the boys have been good to me the past few days. It was at Leicester so it was a good night.

"My friends and family are here, the staff from Leicester are here too, I have been here since the age of 12."

  10. 'We weren't happy in the first half'published at 22:13 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    England 1-0 Switzerland

    England

Man of the match Danny Rose tells Sky Sports: "We spoke at half time and we weren't happy with how we were playing, but we took control after the break and got the goal."

On his own performance: "I feel really good. I was training for 6 weeks at the World Cup throughout the summer. I went back to Tottenham and trained there and I have come away with England again, feeling fit. I had 50 minutes on Friday, which was unfortunate with Luke Shaw getting injured, but I had 80 minutes again tonight."

"Hopefully I can stop getting those niggly injures. I am working hard at my club and hopefully I can get back to my form before I got injured."

England defender Harry Maguire tells Sky Sports: "There were a few words spoken between the boys at half time, the pressing was bits and bobs, the gaffer has stern word with us.

"We struggled early on in the game but we want to be confident in playing from the back and we did it better in the second half. We do not want to give chances and goals away.

"The atmosphere here was brilliant all night and the crowed were chanting my name so it gives you a boost. It is nice to get a victory. We had to stop the trot after three straight defeats and kept a clean sheet too.

"I am delighted for Ben Chilwell, him and Demarai Gray deserve it, both are top boys and have a big future in the game."

  13. 'England deserved the win'published at 22:02 British Summer Time 11 September 2018

    England 1-0 Switzerland

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

England were very poor in the first half. They didn't play with any tempo and couldn't move the ball. They put in a better performance in the second half and they deserved the win.

In general play, England do not create enough. To be a top class team you have to create chance after chance like Spain and Germany have in recent years. Our best chance of scoring is still through set-pieces.

You have got to say Marcus Rashford will have the shirt for the next game because he has scored twice in his last three starts.

Northern Ireland's debut goalscorer Gavin Whyte on Sky Sports: "It's come out and the only thing was to hit it quick and I did that and it went in. Michael O'Neill told me come on and be positive, get the ball and run at players. It was amazing.

"It's all happened really quick. I moved from part-time with Crusaders and now I'm enjoying my time at Oxford.

"My mum is on holiday. She rang before to say all the best and she'll be over the moon. I think she was travelling so she'll have to see the highlights."

Steve: Surely Sterling is finished, too many blanks when it mattered

Neil: This game proves two things. 1. what a great breath of fresh air the nations league is, and 2. How utterly pointless friendly games are. This bore fest won't live long in the memory

Gman: Negativity of the England team? I think anyone watching then for the past 20 years has right to be negative about them. Give me something to get excited about and I'll be very positive
