Jan Bednarek dwells a little too long on the ball and loses it to Callum Paterson, who plays in Josh Murphy.

The 23-year-old is one-on-one with Alex McCarthy but the Southampton custodian manages to get a strong hand to the ball to clear the danger.

Murphy should perhaps have got his shot off a little earlier there.

    Cardiff 0-0 Southampton

Best chance of the game so far.

Josh Murphy collects a pass deep inside the Southampton half, turns onto his left foot and fires a powerful shot towards goal which Alex McCarthy does well to palm to safety.

It was straight at the Southampton keeper but it was a decent save nonetheless.

It's been a frenetic old start to this game.

While Southampton have kept the ball for longer periods, they've looked vulnerable whenever Cardiff break.

The Bluebirds are not the most subtle side in the Premier League but their wholehearted approach certainly gets their supporters on their feet and in good voice.

  7. Postpublished at 15 mins

Very little to choose between the two sides at the Cardiff City Stadium so far.

What a vital challenge that was!

Another half-chance for Cardiff goes begging.

Paterson just couldn't quite sort his feet out quickly enough.

  10. Postpublished at 10 mins

  11. Postpublished at 8 mins

Harry Arter goes in strongly on Mario Lemina but wins the ball.

    Cardiff 0-0 Southampton

Charlie Austin goes close again as he deflects Jannik Vestergaard's long-range free-kick past Neil Etheridge's left-hand post.

Arter appears to be bleeding from the mouth but it doesn't seem to be anything serious.

He'll be back on in no time.

The big question for Ralph Hasenhuttl on his Premier League debut: will it be a suit or a tracksuit on the touchline?

Well, the Austrian opts for a tracksuit and a light hooded puffer jacket. The wealthy dad's apres-ski look.

    Southampton

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl on Jurgen Klopp comparisons: "I was always a friend of his from football. He has a very proactive way of playing, and made a big mark in Germany. That kind of football really influenced my style.

"If I could do similar it would be fantastic for me, but that is too far away.

"We have other targets, goals and problems. The first target is to move as quickly as you can out of this relegation zone."

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock: "Southampton have the fillip of a new manager, a spring in their step, and they'll all want to impress.

"He's done really well wherever he's been and that's the league we're in now as it's open to everybody.

"They've probably got the best squad in the bottom half of the division."

  20. 'The game today will be really interesting'published at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2018

What Ralph Hasenhuttl has done at Leipzig, he did very well. When you look at the Southampton squad they should not be in the position they are in, their performances have been okay, and they played well against Manchester United but conceded two.

When a new manager comes in, it has a positive impact on the players and should raise their performance by 20%. The game today will be really interesting.
