Flashbulb lights reflect off Solskjaer's beaming face as he faces a huddle of photographers, all clamouring for that first picture of the new Manchester United manager.

Old school, Fergie-style, bench coat if you're wondering...

The United fans are already making their new boss feel at home with cries of 'you are my Solskjaer, my only Solskjaer,' are already ringing out at the Cardiff City Stadium from the away end.

Some managers - Jurgen Klopp for example - appear for the warm-up. Others do not.

Evidently, Solskjaer belongs to the latter category.

I have always wondered about the managers who don't appear, what exactly are they doing?

Sir Alex Ferguson used to watch horse racing. Doubt Solskjaer is doing that.

  7. 'Power still rests with the manager'published at 17:24 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2018

Cardiff v Man Utd (17:30 GMT)

With Mourinho gone, a cloud appears to have been lifted at Carrington.

However, some have suggested the blame lies with United's players rather than their former manager, and ex-captain Roy Keane told BBC Radio 5 live they had "got away with murder".

Solskjaer says he feels power within a dressing room still rests with the manager, not his players.

"Football has evolved. The structure of a club has developed. But the power still rests with the manager, " he said.

"He picks the team. He decides the tactics and the strategy. I have told the players what standards we have, on and off the pitch.

"Being a Manchester United player is a privilege. I think all of them want to succeed here."

  8. 'Solskjaer appointment disappointing'published at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2018

    Stephen Warnock
    Ex-Liverpool defender on Final Score

I'm disappointed with the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. If you are Manchester United you have to make a statement, they have appointed three disappointing managers since Sir Alex Ferguson.

Yes Jose Mourinho won trophies but he has not moved the club forward, not created something they can build on for the next 10 years.

And if you are a player in the changing room you see him as a caretaker and you are not as concentrated on impressing for next season.

Genuine question... what happens if Solskjaer loses three or four of his first matches? United are nearer in points to the relegation zone than they are to Manchester City...

  10. 'I bet Ole can't believe his luck!'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2018

Cardiff v Man Utd (17:30 GMT)

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock: "I bet Ole can't believe his luck. I think it's the best job Ole will have in his life, because he can't lose really.

"He'll hold the fort until the end of the season, he's there for at least six months and if he does well he'll get a couple of years.

"And if he doesn't, he goes back to where he was enjoying it anyhow."

For the fourth time in just over five years, a new Manchester United manager is about to take charge for the first time.

It all started 40 miles from here, down the road in Swansea.

A 4-1 win for David Moyes' side that day gave no clue to the turbulence United would endure in the years and months since.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is officially an interim manager.

But, with 21 league games ahead of him, his fate - and dream of being United boss himself - is very much in his own hands.

  12. Cunningham starts for Cardiffpublished at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2018

Cardiff v Man Utd (17:30 GMT)

Cardiff City make one change to the side defeated at Watford last time out, as Greg Cunningham replaces Joe Bennett at left back.

It is little surprise boss Neil Warnock keeps faith with his players who have won four of their last five home Premier League matches.

Wayne Rooney is sat in the BT Sport studio. And first up is the big question... will DC United challenge for the MLS title next season?

Jokes. There is only place to start. Should Mourinho have been sacked?

"Something had to change and it was the right decision," says the former United skipper.

Michael: Excited for a United match for the first time in a while. Might have started Bailly and Dalot. But Ole will figure that out.

Sho: Not quite what I was expecting. Thought Bailly, Dalot and Mata would be starting but I'll take 8/11.

Alex: Disappointing to see Matic in the lineup

  15. Pog-BACKpublished at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2018

A new dawn starts for Manchester United at Cardiff this evening - and so does Paul Pogba.

The France midfielder is included in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first starting XI as United's interim manager, one of four changes.

Phil Jones, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and Pogba replace Eric Bailly, Romelu Lukaku, Diogo Dalot and Matteo Darmian.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just got off the Manchester United team bus at the Cardiff City Stadium.

United's new interim boss was about third off, behind coach Michael Carrick.

Initially there was a shout of 'Ole' before this was replaced by loud boos.

Solskjaer took Cardiff down into the Championship in 2014.

Today, he responded with a sheepish smile.

Former Man Utd midfielder on Football Focus

It's a good fit, it suits the club. Is he (Solskjaer) going to be the man at the end of the season? I don't think so, I think that's why he's there.

He's calm and assured, and hopefully we'll see a response tonight against Cardiff.

  19. Football, eh?published at 17:05 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2018

A quite week at Old Trafford then.

Today it is back to the football for Manchester United as the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revolution begins.

And, in a strange twist of fate, Cardiff are the opponents.

Where you will remember, and where OGS will want to forget, he endured a miserable spell in his first stint as a Premier League manager...
