That is what you should do when the game isn't a quality one and your passing isn't quite working. Stop knocking the ball around in the middle, get the ball wide, get crosses into the box.

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

Dominic Calvert-Lewin heads wide from 15 yards after beating Jonny Evans to a Jonjoe Kenny cross.

He did well to get there, it would have been a superhuman header to beat Kasper Schmeichel from there.

  3. 'Unlucky for Kenny'published at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Good play eventually from Everton, making an opportunity from good passing and play. Lucas Digne overlaps, pulls the ball back, it evades everyone and Kenny is the first to react.

Kasper Schmeichel was never getting there, unlucky for Jonjoe Kenny.

  4. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 21 mins

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

Finally a decent shot on goal appearing on the horizon like a mirage in a desert.

Lucas Digne makes good yards down the Everton left and wings in a low cross. Leicester's Hamza Choudhury gets a little touch, but nothing like a clearance and the ball runs though to Jonjoe Kenny, bombing on down the opposite flank.

He doesn't break stride, just slaps it with his instep, crunching the apex of post and bar with a fierce effort. Kasper Schmeichel was a spectator. The ball heads behind for a goal-kick.

Tony: Never seen so many misplaced passes outside of an U8's game.

Ben: Dreadful football. Worst 15 minutes of the year.

McDapson: One of the sloppiest opening 10 minutes of football ever!

  6. Shockerpublished at 12:49 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

This is the Jackson Pollock-style mess that the two teams have made of this match so far.

The graph below shows all the unsuccessful passes in the first 13 minutes.

Jonjoe Kenny was been the biggest culprit. He has attempted 14 passes with an accuracy of just 35.7%.

Martin Atkinson the referee should stop the match, and say: 'let's imagine these 13 minutes haven't happened, we'll excuse it. It is New Year's Day, maybe you had a tipple before dinner last night. Just calm down, we know you are much better than this.'

Everton have clocked up a passing accuracy of 68.9% in the first 15 minutes. Leicester have managed even less with 64.6%.

By way of comparison Manchester United managed 90.7% in their 4-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday. Even the defeated Cherries were on target with 80% of their attempts.

I don't think we've had three passes without the ball being given away.

  11. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 14 mins

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

    Sloppy from Harry Maguire.

The England centre-back punts straight to Gylfi Sigurdsson who picks out Richarlison.

The Brazilian's first-time shot from 15 yards thumps into Jonny Evans, but that looked like chest rather than hand despite the Everton striker's appeals.

  12. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

The first hint of something of quality.

Gylfi Sigurdsson attempts to thread the eye of the needle and is not far away from picking out Theo Walcott's canny diagonal dart.

At the other end Jamie Vardy clouts a long range effort high, wide and ugly.

  13. 'Both managers will be frustrated'published at 12:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think I have ever seen three minutes of Premier League football like that, with both teams giving the ball away at every opportunity.

Neither team is putting their foot on the ball, both have given it away and both managers will be frustrated as they know their teams can play better.

  14. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

This been a pretty pitiful start from both teams, the ball pinballing between players apparently at random and with no regard for shirt colour.

No chances created at all so far...

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Richarlison is really at his best on the left with the runs he makes. When as a striker with his back to play he doesn't look comfortable.

When he is making diagonal runs with Sigursson on the ball looking to make passes, that is when he is at his best.

  16. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

Ricardo Pereira is felled by Idrissa Gueye as he spins neatly in midfield, but Leicester cannot make anything of the set-piece.

Jamie Vardy and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are both ploughing lone furrows up front, with the likes of Pereira and Richarlison poised to join in.

  17. 'Slow start for both teams'published at 12:35 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2019

    Everton 0-0 Leicester

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

Leicester have started quite defensively, they have not been over the halfway line. Jamie Vardy has been isolated in the opening moments. They have dropped off and allowed Everton to have the ball, but they haven't moved the ball quickly enough to create any opportunities.

    How are the heads Evertonians?

It is a distinctly low-key atmosphere at Goodison Park in the early stages, individual shouts ring around as Hamza Choudhury loses the ball for Leicester in an early midfield skirmish.
