David Thackeray: Two of the best teams in Europe going at it hammer and tongs. Anthony Taylor is going to earn his salary tonight.

Craig Smith: This game is like watching a World Cup final. Both teams scared to commit and are overly defensive. Let down so far.

    James Ballantyne: Intense but scrappy.

  4. 'Liverpool doing nothing with the ball'published at 20:15 Greenwich Mean Time 3 January 2019

    Man City 0-0 Liverpool

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Spurs and England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

Jurgen Klopp will not be happy with the way Liverpool have used the ball, his midfield can't put their foot on the ball.

They need someone to dictate play. They are getting up against the Manchester City players, but doing nothing when they have the ball.

City look more composed on the ball, more relaxed. Liverpool are giving it away so cheaply.

    Man City 0-0 Liverpool

Both sides have passing accuracies of under 80%. Very unlike their usual selves.

That's what a global audience akin to the series finale of Game of Thrones and 30-years of history on your neck will do for you.

Not so great from Vincent Kompany - overclubbing a long ball forwards over the head of Leroy Sane and clean out of play.

We haven't had a shot on goal yet.

Brilliant from Fernandinho, we talked about how disciplined he is in front of the back four but he has got those passes in his locker.

What a ball from Fernandinho! Head down, laces through the ball and he fizzes it from the centre circle out to Raheem Sterling on the right. One-on-one with Andy Robertson - the left-back comes out on top.

The tempo has nosedived, they couldn't keep that up all night. Here's a slow song from the new album...

    Man City 0-0 Liverpool

    Chris Waddle

It's taken eight minutes to see Liverpool put four or five passes together. That was the first real attack from Liverpool, but Manchester City stood off them.

Richard Browne: Nervy from Liverpool; quite how Fernandinho isn’t in the book already is staggering

Mark Ryan: I thought football was supposed to be enjoyable. I feel physically sick with nerves. What a game with such huge importance. Time to bite my nails. Come on Liverpool!!!

Johnny Magrinho: Already it’s clear how City’s fans are going to act tonight. Booing every time any Liverpool player gets the ball. What a joke. Pathetic behaviour. Create a hostile environment by chanting and supporting your own team not berating the opposition. Pathetic.

    Man City 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool play out from the back for the first real time and there's real threat as they open City up, space on the right. Trent Alexander-Arnold whips the cross in, Roberto Firmino tries to flick it on and it actually comes off a City defender and pops into the arms of Ederson.

It's intense stuff, alright. High tempo, plenty of errors from both sides.

    Classic Premier League fare.

  15. ouch!

    Man City 0-0 Liverpool

City first to every second ball at the moment, Raheem Sterling is caught late, play goes on and Fernandinho then runs into Andrew Robertson after the Scotland man clears his lines.

Clumsy rather than malicious I feel. A stoppage, anyway, as Jurgen Klopp calls James Milner over for a tete-a-tete.

    Man City 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool are being given zero time on the ball, City pressing high up the park. Alisson is unruffled though, happy to play the ball to Dejan Lovren under pressure. James Milner then kicks it straight out.

City have the leaders a touch rattled...

That's a couple of mistakes from Liverpool. City have come out the blocks and it's a great atmosphere - the best atmosphere I have heard at Man City.

Sergio Aguero does well on the left wing to trick his way past a man but he overcooks his crossfield ball. City started well.

Now Alisson slices a clearance too. Nerves?
