But in the end, there is only one Championship side in the quarter-finals of the Scottish League Cup.

After their fine win away to top-flight Dundee yesterday, Ayr were handed a big pay day but a an even more difficult tie away to Rangers.

Hibs' reward for beating County is perhaps the tie of the round at home to Aberdeen.

Holders Celtic take on St Johnstone, while Hearts host Motherwell.

Hibs head coach Neil Lennon was delighted to progress to the quarter-finals.

"We made hard work of it," he told BBC Scotland. "I changed the team and the formation, so I took a bit of a calculated risk, but we changed it back and it paid off."

Lennon paid tribute to match winner Daryl Horgan, his new signing from Preston, for his winning goal.

"I was delighted with his performance for his home debut," he said.

"He was excellent and Stevie Mallan has been inspirational since he came here and it was a quality goal to get us back into the game."

Ross County co-manager Stuart Kettlewell tells BBC Radio Scotland: "The boys are disappointed by the manner of losing it and because what they put in the game.

"We had plenty of chances and we felt we looked strong physically and mentally at the time we lose the goals.

"It is a difficult one to take and we feel we could have got more from the game.

"We can't criticise the players and we feel they proved a point after the disappointment of relegation last season.

"We take the defeat on the chin and take the positives out of it."

Earlier, Rangers moved into the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over Kilmarnock, but manager Steven Gerrard has had a go at the host's artificial playing surface.

Rangers winger Jamie Murphy was stretchered off with a knee injury and Gerrard has suggested that top-flight football should not be played on such pitches.

What a fabulous 90 minutes and extra-time was the least Ross County deserved. However, you don’t always get what you deserve in football. A cruel lesson for County’s young management team, but a hugely encouraging performance from them. An important win for Hibs at the end of a tough week.

Hibs come back twice from behind to book a home tie against Aberdeen in the quarter-finals of the Scottish League Cup.

Championship leaders County are made to pay for failing to consolidate their leads. They were ahead for five minutes the first time and only six the second.

Hibs head coach Neil Lennon had gambled with six changes from Thursday's Europa League defeat by Molde and it paid off - if only just.

The Edinburgh side paid out to buy Daryl Horgan from Preston last week and the Republic of Ireland winger has rewarded them with a fine winning goal.
