There are players in that Liverpool backline who have decades of experience and will know they can do better.

I think they will be doing the bulk of the talking at half-time, not Neil Redfearn.

The number of times I've seen Leandra Little put her arm up for offside and someone is out of the line - it's the sign of a team that hasn't played together for very long.

There have been some basic things that they've got wrong, too.

That's all still to come of course, but the second half of our first feature game isn't too far away....

And the team news is in ahead of that match at Kingsmeadow.

Fran Kirby is among the Chelsea substitutes as she continues to recover from a knock picked up on England duty last week.

Karen Carney skippers the champions for the first time having been appointed Katie Chapman's successor.

Man City name an entirely British starting XI, possessing internationals aplenty and a pretty decent bench too with Nadia Nadim among the substitutes.

Chelsea Women XI: Lindahl, Bright, Carter, Eriksson, Anderson, Carney (capt), Ingle, Ji, Mjelde, England, Bachmann.

Subs: Telford, Thorisodttir, Blundell, Spence, Cuthbert, Kirby, Engman.

Man City Women XI: Bardsley, Bonner, Houghton (capt), Beattie, McManus, Walsh, Scott, Stanway, Lawley, Parris, Hemp.

Subs: Beckie, Emslie, Roebuck, Weir, Nadim, Jans, Wullaert.

Once the four 14:00 BST kick-offs get going later on, we'll be focusing our attention on the meeting of last year's top two.

Champions Chelsea host Man City at Kingsmeadow and will hope to take the bragging rights once again as early as the opening weekend.

  6. 'Liverpool have been disjointed'published at 13:22 British Summer Time 9 September 2018

It's a shame it is so one-sided but Liverpool have been disjointed at the back.

As a goalkeeper you have to organise your back line and make sure everyone is marked up, and they simply didn't.

I would have expected more from that Liverpool backline and it will be be interesting to see what Neil Redfearn does at half-time.

Will he be a baller and a shouter, or will he accept that his side have been outclassed?

Arsenal have been sublime - but Liverpool disjointed at the back.

The goals, as impressive as the build-up play was, could have been prevented by a defence marked by a little more order.

Is there a way back into this for Liverpool? It will take some showing...

Liverpool have, at least, looked a little cohesive in the final third, carving an opening for Niamh Charles that Anke Preuss races off her line to clear.

Otherwise, they've looked disorganised defensively - and, one minute into added time, their day almost gets worse, as Beth Mead misses a chance to prod home at the far post and the visitors belt the danger clear.

  9. goal

    Vivianne Miedema

Who else? Vivianne Miedema gets the final Arsenal touch but it looks like Leandra Little prods it home as she looks to intercept.

Either way, Arsenal were pulling all the strings in that manoeuvre, four of them swarming the box as Miedema had all the time in the world to nudge a bobbling shot goalward. A sublime team-goal in the build-up, even if the finish felt preventable.

A training ground exercise for Arsenal now, this. Can Liverpool salvage a shred of self-respect?

    Arsenal Women 3-0 Liverpool Women

Arsenal are taunting Liverpool now: Vivianne Miedema, already a European champion with the Netherlands at the ripe old age of 22, has Neil Redfearn's backline jinking left and right like a washing machine on spin cycle.

Will be interesting to see the heat map for this game: Arsenal have managed 71% possession, and they've spent so long camped in the Liverpool half they're probably eligible to apply for citizenship there now.

Liverpool had been threatening to get back into this game before that third goal.

But here's the moment Lisa Evans doubled Arsenal's lead back in the 14th minute.

  12. goal

    Kim Little

Moments after making a sublime interception at the other end, Kim Little has the ball in the back of the Liverpool net!

Liverpool were just beginning to thrash through the gears now, Sophie Bradley-Auckland overlapping on the right-hand side but overhitting the cross for Little to intervene.

Arsenal break, and Vivianne Miedema turns provider again, notching up her second assist of the game with a telepathic prod into Little's path.

That is going in every day of the week but Pauline Peyraud-Magnin gets up and tips it over. It shows how agile she is.

Maybe that is the kick that Arsenal need to impose their gameplan back on Liverpool like they did in the first 20 minutes.

  14. Postpublished at 29 mins

    Arsenal Women 2-0 Liverpool Women

Right on cue, Christie Murray senses her first whiff of goal and pulls the trigger...

And only the intervention of Pauline Peyraud-Magnin preserves Arsenal's clean sheet, as she flies to greet a shot that was otherwise destined to make the net bulge.

Arsenal are suddenly living a little dangerously in Liverpool's first real spell of concerted pressure, and Dominique Bloodworth must make a last-minute intervention herself seconds later.

  15. Postpublished at 28 mins

    Arsenal Women 2-0 Liverpool Women

Very difficult to envisage Liverpool getting back into this if Arsenal carry on at this pace.

The Gunners have sensed blood and are snapping into their press with real venom, ruthlessly constricting and constraining Liverpool.

Every time a player in a purple shirt finds the ball at her feet, she looks up to find her routes crowded out by one of Joe Montemurros' number.

It's like trying to squeeze out of an electronics shop on Black Friday.

Vivianne Miedema searches for her second of the game, but Liverpool goalkeeper Anke Preuss manages to extend a leg to avert the danger.

Miedema took the brunt of the blow as she looked to follow through and is limping somewhat - but an assist and a goal isn't bad for 20 minutes' work if she does have to come off.

Katie McCabe hits a shot with venom and direction that cannons off a purple shirt for another Arsenal corner - their third of the game.

    Arsenal Women 2-0 Liverpool Women

We're a quarter of the way through this game now and Arsenal are in control.

Netherlands international Vivianne Miedema gave them the perfect start after only five minutes.

    Arsenal Women 2-0 Liverpool Women

After a less-than-convincing headed clearance, Liverpool clear their lines from the corner, and win their first corner as Louise Quinn clips Christie Murray's bobbling rebound over the bar.

It's an easy catch for Pauline Peyraud-Magnin, though, in her first touch of the game.

You have to feel a little for Liverpool's Jess Clarke, ploughing a lone furrow in the middle of the park in the face of relentless Arsenal pressure - seconds after their first spell of pressure, they're back defending another corner.

  19. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Arsenal Women 2-0 Liverpool Women

There really is no stopping this Arsenal side: they breach the Liverpool box again but Daniëlle van de Donk can't quite muster a decisive enough touch as the hosts come again, and Anke Preuss gratefully intervenes.

Arsenal are pressing and constricting Liverpool like a vice here, and Neil Redfearn's side cannot find a route outside of their half.

Left-back Satara Murray tries to do it on her own, but she needs the help of Niamh Fahey to crowd out Beth Mead and surrender another Arsenal corner.

It will be interesting to see Arsenal's attitude now. As easy as it has been, will they now take their foot off the pedal or will they show that killer instinct that will serve them well later in the season.

It's been an extension of their summer holiday so far.
