An early chance goes Sheffield Wednesday's way in the first couple of minutes. Adam Reach, who scored a wonder volley against Leeds last time out, runs from deep but fires wide when he gets his shot away.

  2. KICK-OFFpublished at 19:46 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

All five of Wednesday's Championship games are now under way.

Rotherham have been forced into a change before kick-off against Bristol City. Centre-back Richard Wood withdrew from the warm-up and Jon Taylor has come in to replace him.

Sheff Wed v West Brom (19:45 BST)

Out come the teams at Hillsborough, where for the second time in five days Sheffield Wednesday are hosting one of the promotion chasers in the Championship.

A home victory could put the Owls, who start two points off the play-off places, right in the mix too.

Nottingham Forest v Millwall (19:45 BST)

If Nottingham Forest fall behind to Millwall at the City Ground, the stats would suggest that all is not lost.

Millwall have lost 10 points from winning positions this season, the highest number in the Championship, which can be pinpointed as one of the main reasons why last season's surprise play-off contenders find themselves in the bottom three.

The Lions face a Forest side yet to lose at home in the league this season.

Who should be Villa's new boss?

    David Fletcher: Mellberg.

If you're after a cult hero, Olof Mellberg would be most Villa fans' choice, we think!

Rotherham v Bristol City (19:45 BST)

All 10 of Rotherham's Championship points have come at home, but it could so easily have been 12 after they let slip a 2-0 lead to draw with Stoke on Saturday.

Even so, it's been a promising start to the season for Paul Warne's Millers, who were among the favourites for relegation at the beginning of the campaign.

Bristol City go to the New York Stadium having lost their past two away matches in the league.

    Derby v Norwich (19:45 BST)

Eight days on from that win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, Derby County are back on home soil for the visit of in-form Norwich.

Four straight wins had catapulted the Canaries into the top six by last weekend - not bad for a team that lost more than £30m worth of attacking talent in James Maddison and Josh Murphy in the summer.

Blackburn v Sheffield United (19:45 BST)

    Tony MowbrayImage source, PA

Blackburn have gone more than a year without losing a league game at home, but that record will be tested by a Sheffield United side that has already won three times on the road this season.

No Championship team has racked up more away victories in the Championship this term than Chris Wilder's Blades, who are chasing a third successive win.

Who should be Villa's new boss?

Carter Tony: Vital now that Villa appoint the right manager to take us forward, too many poor decisions in the past, I think Dean Smith is perfect choice as he knows the league, his teams plays decent football and show that hunger to play under him

    Mr AL: Carvalhal.

Sheffield Wednesday v West Bromwich Albion (19:45 BST)

Jay Rodriguez and Dwight GayleImage source, PA

They say you should only look at the league table after 10 games to judge your team's start to a season and, if that old adage is true, it made good viewing for West Bromwich Albion.

The Baggies' response to relegation has been to score goals for fun in the Championship. Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle have 13 between them already this season - that's only one fewer than second-placed Middlesbrough have managed altogether.

Can Sheffield Wednesday stop Albion's deadly duo? The Owls are on a decent run themselves and held Leeds to a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough on Friday.

  14. Championship team news headlinespublished at 19:13 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

    • West Brom make one change from Saturday's win at Preston, with Chris Brunt replacing Gareth Barry in midfielder and also taking on the captain's armband.
    • Sheffield United are unchanged for their match at Blackburn.
    • Jiri Skalak and Tom Elliott are among four players brought into Millwall's team for their visit to Nottingham Forest.

Leeds and Middlesbrough have occupied the top two positions in the Championship for most of the season so far and they returned to those places with away wins on Tuesday.

Tyler Roberts got Leeds' winner at Hull, while two early goals gave Boro victory at winless Ipswich.

The real drama came at Villa Park, though. Aston Villa led Preston 2-0, then had James Chester sent off, then fell 3-2 behind, then scored a stoppage-time equaliser, then missed a 97th-minute penalty to win it.

And then Villa sacked Steve Bruce.

Ian Jones: Sad to see Steve Bruce go. A thoroughly decent man dealing with more personal and professional issues in the last year or so than most of us will ever face in a lifetime bought down by the cruel and fickle nature of today's football culture.

WiFi Tom: Third season Championship syndrome for Bruce at Villa. Still a good manager, he will get another job no bother. Ex-Norwich player but would fit the bill at Ipswich.

  19. Bruce sacked by Aston Villapublished at 18:58 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

Stoke City midfielder Darren Fletcher on the BBC News Channel:

"First and foremost, I think the cabbage being thrown at him is totally out of order. That shouldn't happen to any manager at a football ground.

"Secondly, he has been under unfair pressure since the summer and new owners came in. He has got a proven record of getting teams out of the Championship.

"But I think the fans have spoken, really. Ultimately that's been Steve Bruce's downfall.

"He is a great manager but it was just 'time's up', really. Aston Villa need a change."

Tomos Hooson: I would like to say thank you to Steve Bruce. He brought stability and pride back to the Villa, alongside some great signings and performances. Also last season/start of this year must have been awful for him personally. I wish him all the best.

Will Benson: As much as it seemed a foregone conclusion in recent weeks I'm a little apprehensive considering our recent track record with managers. The fans want Smith or Henry but I'm not convinced either are ready for a job like Villa, not to mention the same fans wanted Lambert!

Tony Berg: Keep your hands off Dean Smith. He’s ours and has unfinished business...
