Bruce took charge of Aston Villa in October 2016, and it seemed a decent fit at the time.

Villa wanted an instant return to the top flight after relegation the previous season, while Bruce was a manager with significant Championship experience and four promotions to his credit.

If anyone could lift Villa from their malaise, surely it was him?

Ross Willians: Steve Bruce did a lot for us in the two years that he was here, but I think the decision at the end of it all was right, because we have just stagnated and need a fresh face in the dugout. But I still respect Bruce for making us believe after the relegation from the Premier League.

Ashley Skinner: I would bring in Allardyce, Moyes or McCarthy until the end of the season. For long term I would bring in Dean Smith.

From 2-0 up last night, they crumbled, [but] the cabbage thing is a disgrace.

Regardless of what people think about Steve Bruce, he is a man.

You might not like the manager, but don’t throw things at people.

The decision had to be made. This club has to get promoted.

There is a quality collection of players who just need a bit of coaching and a bit of guiding, and then they will score goals.

Do I have sympathy for Steve Bruce? Yes and no.

I have sympathy for him as a bloke. He went through a lot last year. But they did gamble on going up.

Steve Bruce has left Villa with the club 12th in the Championship.

The season started brightly enough with victories over Hull and Wigan in the first two matches, but things have turned sour with only one win in nine league games since then.

Things came to a head on Tuesday when, before Villa's home game against bottom club Preston, an angry fan threw a cabbage at Bruce on the touchline.

"To say it's disappointing is an understatement for a club like this," said Bruce after a dramatic 3-3 draw. "Unfortunately, it sums up the society we are in at the moment. There's no respect for anyone."

  7. Bruce sacked by Aston Villapublished at 17:17 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

Bruce led Villa to the Championship play-off final last season, but defeat by Fulham at Wembley ended their promotion dreams and led to a summer of uncertainty on and off the field at Villa Park.

Financial issues dominated the headlines; deadlines for tax bills were missed and there was a very real threat of administration until new majority owners Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris came on board in July.

Bruce's position since then has always appeared to be a precarious one, with Thierry Henry rumoured to be lined up for the manager's job according to some news sources.

The new owners publicly backed Bruce, but some supporters were keen for a fresh start and that number has grown in recent weeks.

  8. Bruce sacked by Aston Villapublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 3 October 2018

A club statement reads as follows:

"Aston Villa Football Club can confirm that manager Steve Bruce and his assistants Colin Calderwood, Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence and Gary Walsh are leaving their posts with immediate effect after having their contracts terminated. The process to appoint a new manager is under way.

"The board would like to place on record our gratitude to Steve and his team for their hard work and commitment. We wish them well for the future.

“The process of recruiting a new manager has begun. In the meantime, Kevin MacDonald (Aston Villa Under-23s manager) will be in charge of the team for our trip to Millwall on Saturday.”
