Rangers manager Steven Gerrard on RangersTV: "We were obviously the more superior team. We wanted a fast start. The responsibility was on us to take the game to Dundee.

"I just thought the game died at certain at times, the tempo and intensity dropped too much for my liking. Four-nil is okay, but I was wanting more.

"I still thought at times Dundee actually fancied it and still had a little bit of joy within it, so if I'm being ultra-critical, I'm just expecting a bit more."

Hearts celebrated Craig Levein's return to the sidelines - albeit up in the stand - after the manager's health scare by stretching their lead at the top of the Premiership.

Who would have guessed that Livingston, who scraped into the top flight via the play-offs, would be level on points with reigning champions Celtic five points behind?

Rangers' thumping win over Dundee and Hibs' late winner over Kilmarnock lifts both those sides above St Johnstone.

There's not much movement at the bottom of the Premiership, with Kilmarnock dropping to seventh after their late defeat by Hibs.

St Mirren finish the weekend above Hamilton courtesy of their fine 0-0 draw with reigning champions Celtic last night in Oran Kearney's first game in charge.

Aberdeen, runners-up for the last four seasons, remain stuck in eighth despite their point in Perth.

And Dundee remain rooted to the bottom of the table without a point after another bruising defeat - this time away to Rangers.

The danger signs continue to ring for Neil McCann's side.

Kilmarnock manager Steve Clarke disagreed with counterpart Neil Lennon's assessment of the winning penalty.

"To lose to such a soft and dubious decision is disappointing," Clarke told BBC Scotland. "It looked to me as if Maclaren kicks Kirk on the Achilles, which would make it seem a strange award.

"To compound that, Efe Ambrose kicked Kirk in their box in injury-time and we didn't get that one, so it's a bad day for us.

"I felt we did enough in the first half to show we could have gone on to win; I certainly didn't expect to lose that game."

Hibs head coach Neil Lennon was "very pleased" with what he felt was a "deserved" three points after his side's 3-2 victory over Kilmarnock.

"It was a high-quality game and the first four goals were outstanding," he told BBC Scotland. "In the second half, we got control without being penetrative, but the subs made a big difference for us.

"We changed shape a little bit and we are still a work in,progress, but it was huge win for us."

Lennon insisted his side deserved their winning penalty after Jamie Maclaren went down in a challenge from Kirk Broadfoot.

"Jamie is the wrong side of him and gets his foot taken away," Lennon added. "He has read it and he is just a clever player."

Arguably the player of the day is Arbroath's Bobby Linn.

The 32-year-old former Dundee, Peterhead, Morton and East Fife forward scored a hat-trick as the Red Lichties moved two points clear of Raith Rovers at the top of League One.

That not only took Linn's total for the season to nine but was the third game in row - and fourth in five games - in which he has scored.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes was pleased with the way his players responded to falling a goal behind.

"The reaction from the players in the second half was terrific," he told BBC Scotland.

"We lost a poor goal in a set play and St Johnstone were the better team in the first half, they were a bit more aggressive in the final third.

"We brought on Sam [Cosgrove], who was very effective for us, and the draw was no more than we deserved.

""There are positives to take, but we want to win games. It’s important that we find those little margins to turn one point into three."

Hearts manager Craig Levein gave a message to the Tynecastle support.

“They can dream any time they like," he told BBC Scotland when asked about his side's five-point lead at the top of the Premiership.

“It’s not up to me to tell them when to dream. This whole one-game-at-a-time thing always rears it’s head and what is important to me is to not get too excited. We’ve got a long way to go.

“I think keeping improving is the answer to how we can keep going and keep winning.

“It was a hard-fought game today and we deserved to win.”

Hamilton Academical manager Martin Canning on BBC Radio Scotland: "It was a competitive game, the goal is a fantastic strike and ultimately that great finish is the difference between the teams.

"We didn’t create anywhere near enough and for that we’re disappointed.

"Our strikers didn’t link the game well enough, our movement wasn’t sharp enough. Every department knows they can do better.

"It does take time when new players come to a club, but that's no excuse - we still expect better than that.

"We've allowed teams roundabout us to get three points from us and that's not good enough."

Livingston manager Gary Holt on BBC Radio Scotland: "The table makes good reading and it’s testament to the boys’ endeavour and desire to produce at a level not many have been at.

"They’re embracing and enjoying it and you saw that in their performance.

"With a wee bit more care in the final third, we could have had a couple more chances.

"We can't carry passengers - we can't afford to - and the players have bought into that ethic. They put in the work in training and they'll stay in the team on Saturdays.

"It's well-documented that we bang it long, throw it long, but we've got some quality players."

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright felt a draw with Aberdeen was a fair result.

"Disappointed at how we played at times, we gave the ball away and were countered on too easily," he told BBC Scotland. "They had more possession and more shots, but it was a fair enough result.

"They brought Cosgrove on and went slightly longer, putting great balls into the box. We sat off a bit and we’ve got to try to be braver. There are aspects of the game that we need to improve on.

"We want to be hard to beat. We will be more open when we play with two wingers and that brings its problems defensively, but we’ll deal with that. We’ve added pace, mobility and quality at the top end of the pitch."

There were fingers pointed at Livingston last season in terms of their physicality and people saying they just lumped the ball forward. They try and play in the opposition half and they've got good players. Today, the midfield, Byrne and Pittman in there were excellent, Jacobs sits a little deeper. Lawless was fantastic.

They get the ball to the forward players. Their work ethic, they just tick the boxes. They seem really grounded and a lot of teams will not fancy going up against them.

Accies asked them a question in the second half in terms of their battling qualities and they stood up to it. They should have won this game by three or four.

Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson thinks referee Bobby Madden erred at Hearts' winner.

"First and foremost, an individual error actually cost us the game and then a decision that went against us with a 50/50 ball," he told BBC Scotland.

"Trevor clearly gets the ball. I've had the benefit of watching it back again, Bobby doesn't.

"It's a difficult one for him to call. Potentially, our goalkeeper has a broken ankle or broken fibula.

"It's disappointing to lose the game like that."

Arbroath open up a two-point gap at the top of League One after a convincing win over Forfar.

That came after managerless Raith Rovers could only take a point away to Brechin.

In League Two, Edinburgh City recorded their seventh straight win to remain two points clear at the top of the table after a 2-1 win over Annan.

Peterhead are two points behind after coming from behind to win at Cowdenbeath, while Clyde are a further point back.

The Bully Wee edged out Albion Rovers, who have now suffered 12 successive defeats and sit at the bottom of the table without a point.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle take over at the top of the Championship from neighbours Ross County thanks to a 3-2 win over Partick Thistle.

County drop a point behind after being held to a goalless draw down in Dumfries by Queen of the South.

The disappointing starts to the season continue for Dundee United, Dunfermline and Falkirk.

Only a stoppage-time goal prevented Morton leaving Tannadice with a win in the Greenock side's first game under Jonatan Johansson.

The Pars were held at home by part-timers Alloa, while Falkirk, in Ray McKinnon's first league game in charge, squandered a two-goal lead to lose away to Ayr and are still without a point.

Rangers swept aside Dundee to pile more pressure on visiting manager Neil McCann, the former Ibrox winger.

Lassana Coulibaly and Ryan Kent put Steven Gerrard's side in control as Dundee squandered chances of their won.

But James Tavernier's penalty secured a victory for the home side before Kenny Miller, the veteran striker who left Rangers this summer, was sent off.

There was still time for Glenn Middleton to add to the former Ibrox duo's misery.
