With The Apprentice starting, will it be Mourinho or his players who hear those dreaded words...

Mike: A manager can be sacked for poor performance, but why not the players? If I was Mourinho, I'd show up fifteen minutes before kick off and say :- "I'm going nowhere, but some of you will be on Monday if you don't win today. AND we won't be giving you a reference".

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, Mirror journalist David McDonnell - who broke the initial story of Jose Mourinho's imminent sacking - said: "Behind the scenes, Jose Mourinho has reached the point of no return.

"He feels the club haven't backed him and the board cannot allow this situation of unrest in the dressing room to continue.

"Sir Alex Ferguson never washed his dirty linen in public but we've seen it before with Mourinho when it all ended at Chelsea.

"Mourinho was given a contract extension at Old Trafford this year, and the assumption was that he was going to be backed in the transfer market, but he wasn't. Playing Scott McTominay and Ander Herrera at centre-half were very public messages to the board that he hasn't been backed.

"Zinedine Zidane is a name that has been put in the frame. This club like to have a plan in process, and a replacement lined up before they move, so any delay suggests they haven't got their man lined up yet."

I don’t think you can go for the people who appointed Jose Mourinho, this is a serial winner of trophies and he’s lost his way. He’s got to go back to basics.

He creates an amazing energy when it works but a massive negative energy when it doesn’t, he’s the fault in all of this, Mourinho.

Did sacking Moyes work? Van Gaal? We may have won trophies since but we've never had a title winning squad. The buck doesn't stop with Mourinho, the players have to take responsibility and the board need to realise our transfer strategies have been awful since David Gill departed.

I don’t think Mourinho will turn it around. That negativity has set in, the game against Valencia mid-week, they started the first five minutes bright but that fizzled out and they offered very little throughout.

The game against West Ham was the most baffling with the team selection, you looked at the team and you couldn’t tell who was playing where and you asked ‘is he going to be playing players out of position?’ As it turned out he did and that’s where you're clutching and why he won’t turn it round.

AP: There is no debate, for the good of the EPL, Mourinho must go. He can't handle big clubs. He is an ok manager of the game, but an awful teacher of the game.

Shane: The day will come when great managers won't want to manage in England because of the onslaught of attacks. So when that happens you will all ask why? My fellow Manchester United fans are becoming cry babies

Rezaa: Mourinho should go. He has the players to be successful but he doesn't let them play to their strengths. Simple.

akf: Mourinho only ever had a plan A, but appears being undermined by certain players, and a poor man in Woodward. Lukaku stood still up front isn't the Utd way, try Rashford and Martial up front together to give movement as what is there at moment isn't working

Bruce: I hope Mourinho will be gone as soon as possible, he has been undermined for months and the sacking will show how incompetent the board is and Moruinho is just a scapegoat

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Spurs and England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

Bournemouth were very good in the transfer market and the players they have brought in, they know they can sell on.

Maybe their away form is a little bit weak because they give the ball away too easily and there is a lot of space in midfield.

Callum Wilson has got to maintain what he is doing and I was surprised he wasn't in the England squad that was announced in the week.

It's sixth against seventh at Vicarage Road - not many would have predicted that before the season began.

Watford's lofty perch is the result of their best start to a top-flight campaign - the highlight of which was probably beating Spurs.

A draw at Fulham and a loss at Arsenal since then might have taken away some of their momentum, but they played well at the Emirates and arguably deserved better.

Bournemouth got themselves back on track by beating Crystal Palace after their 4-0 thumping at Burnley, and Eddie Howe's side do have the occasional spectacular off-day. But they are - more often than not - a pleasure to watch.

Having watched Lionel Messi light up Wembley single-handedly in the week, Cardiff will have a gameplan to try and darken the stadium.

The Bluebirds' season, which was always going to be a hard one, doesn't get any easier - Spurs are the fifth member of last season's top seven they will have faced in their opening eight matches.

Neil Warnock will hope and pray that facing Barcelona will have taken its toll in some way on Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino, though, will be looking for a comfortable day at their temporary office to maintain Tottenham's promising start to their league campaign.
