  2. 'Barcelona were inferior, scared and unable to find answers'published at 23:14 British Summer Time 7 May 2019

    Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona (Agg: 4-3)

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

Jurgen Klopp understood what happened in the first leg better than Ernesto Valverde. In that game Liverpool had a lot of chances and played a high tempo that Barcelona struggled with. Klopp said they didn't do much wrong in the first leg and they did not have to change much so they did the same again tonight.

Over the two games, for three quarters of them Barcelona were inferior, scared and unable to find answers. For me, Messi was saying 'how do I influence the game?'. For the last hour where was he? Not many teams have ever done that to him.

After the first leg, Messi warned the Barcelona players that that game was played at the pace Liverpool wanted, and he said they [Barcelona] were all exhausted and couldn't play at that pace again, but that's what has happened again.

They fell for a trap. In the wide areas, two or three Liverpool players were always around them. Barcelona tried to look for that extra pass but couldn't find it and lost possession. Barcelona have not played a team like this in a long, long time.

  3. 'We had to be cheeky'published at 23:14 British Summer Time 7 May 2019

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp to BT Sport: "The whole game was too much. It was overwhelming. We played against maybe the best team in world. Winning is difficult but winning with a clean sheet, I don’t know they did it. It’s unbelievable.

"I saw James Milner crying on the pitch after the game. It means so much to all of us. It’s the best phase of football. There are more important things in the world. But creating this emotional atmosphere together is so special. It’s all about the players.

"The mix of potential and unbelievable heart is just a mix I never saw before. You have to be confident in a game like this. Divock and Shaq didn’t play a lot. Putting a performance in like that, it was so important. It shows what’s possible in football. It’s so nice. It’s really nice.

"We had to be serious. But we needed to be cheeky as well. It was necessary. Barcelona defend predictable things well. But you need to be unpredictable at moments. I saw the ball flying in the goal, I didn’t see the corner. I didn’t see who took the corner. Ben Woodburn said ‘what happened?’"

Barcelona have fabulous players and like a bit of time but they didn't get any.

Jurgen Klopp was brave enough to say 'I want you to play at this pace and play a high line. Not just for 20 minutes but the whole game'.

Last night [Manchester City beating Leicester] would've been a crushing blow, but they managed to do it. The heart in those players was incredible. Milner, what a job he does.

Robertson had to go off after Suarez did a sneaky one on him. But there were heroes everywhere you looked in a red shirt. Eight or nine Barcelona players switched off for that winning goal.

    Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona (Agg: 4-3)

More from Ernesto Valverde: "Goals are always somebody's fault, some mistake or other. If you stop to look at any goal you'll see that there's an error in there.

"They surprised us with the fourth goal – presumably my players weren't looking. Liverpool were streetsmart and they scored."

Sorry to put a dampener on this evening but the best team in the champions league this season, by far, has been Ajax. Can't see Liverpool beating Ajax, they won't have enough of the ball.

So deserved for Liverpool. They have been a force all season and the 1st leg result was not justice to their performance. Beat Barcelona all over the pitch and wanted it so much more! Hope Brighton do them a favour on Sunday.

Spurs fan here and hoping for a night half as good as what I've watched tonight tomorrow. Well played LFC. Think I speak for a lot of spurs fans when I say we would rather play Barcelona than Liverpool.

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Liverpool are favourites [to win the Champions League], no matter who they will be playing. It was painful for their players to suffer the defeat last year [in the final] and that is an advantage for them now as they've got unfinished business.

Tottenham are very tired, but Liverpool have managed to keep that energy and belief up. Liverpool would be favourites if Spurs get through. Ajax, with their young players, the expectation, even in Holland people didn't expect them to get this far.

Fourth goal summed up Barça: mentally and physically slow and complacent, unable to keep up with Liverpool's speed of thought or legs.

Tried to play with control but Liverpool were too fast and intense, and Barça couldn't match it. Blown away.

  18. 'They rolled us over'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 7 May 2019

    Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona (Agg: 4-3)

Ernesto Valverde, Barcelona coach: "Things got on top of us after those two quick goals. We didn't manage to get on the scoresheet and they rolled us over really.

"It's a terrible result for our fans and for ourselves. It's really, really unfortunate, but credit to Liverpool. We tried to sit a little bit deeper, but the tie ended for us with the fourth goal. We couldn't respond."
