Rafael Benitez, who won the tournament with Inter Milan in 2010, told BBC World Service: "For us it was very serious. Here in England, you don’t pay attention to the competition. But in South America it’s massive.

"In Spain and Europe, everyone wants to win every trophy.

"At Inter Milan with the Brazilians, they were desperate to win. The doctor had a massive list of injured players. I said I will not play them because they’re injured. Then one player comes to me to say 'I want to play, it was my dream when I was kid. I told my father one day I will win this trophy'."

Jose Mourinho: How Manchester United manager's season collapsed

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos says it is disrespectful to talk about whether Jose Mourinho could return to the club.

Santiago Solari will win a first trophy as coach if they win today

However, Mourinho is available after being sacked by Manchester United.

"People need to show more respect to the coach we have now," Ramos in yesterday's pre-match news conference. "Mourinho left us five years ago yet everyone keeps talking about him."

On Thursday's BBC Radio 5 live football daily, they discussed what Mourinho's next move could be. Read about it here.

Real Madrid v Al Ain (16:30 GMT)

Al Ain coach Zoran Mamic says they are like a Smart car racing against a Mercedes today.

"Real Madrid is the biggest club there is, but sometimes a Smart car can beat a Mercedes," said the Croat.

"We want to make the final very complicated for Real Madrid. We hope that whoever is in charge of the stadium makes their goal smaller. Real Madrid is the big favourite but sometimes machines don't work as well as you expect them to."
