Ryan Christie’s left-footed free-kick from just outside the box brushes the side-netting in the game’s first real chance. A real close one for the man who’s racked up eight goals already this season.

Almost a second goal for the visitors as Daniel Candeias charges down an attempted clearance from David McGurn. The ball is deflected wide in the penalty box and the Portuguese winger can't find space to get in a shot to embarrass the goalie.

Cowdenbeath have started very brightly. I think Gary Bollan is doing exactly what he wanted - committing players forward. So far very a very positive start from Cowdenbeath.

  12. Can Defoe pitch in with another goal?published at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2019

    Cowdenbeath v Rangers (19:45)

Jermain Defoe makes his second start for Rangers this evening. The former England striker is already off the mark but he might be wondering about the state of the pitches up here.

He's experienced the widely disparaged artificial turf at Killie and Livi and now he's getting a taste of life in the lower league's on the notoriously heavy surface at Central Park, which gets damaged when the odd stock car spins off the track surrounding it. Yes, that's right, stock cars...

  13. Bollan ponders 'tremendous upset'published at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2019

    Cowdenbeath Rangers (19:45)

Cowdenbeath manager Gary Bollan on Sportsound

"For the players its’ a great occasion. They’ll go out and give it their best shot. That’s all I can ask from them - to play to the best of their ability - maximum effort and maximum commitment and see how they get on.

"They give us it every week so I’m sure I’ll get it tonight. The big thing for them is that they go out and enjoy themselves t because it’s a big occasion for them and it’s a big occasion for the football club.

"These players have prepared well. They should want to play in this type of game week in week out. For them to have the challenge of playing against the quality that Rangers have got. I’m sure they’ll enjoy it.

"Cup ties throughout there’s always upsets. If we can manage one tonight it will be one tremendous upset."

  14. Bain keeps the gloves for Celticpublished at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2019

    Celtic v St Johnstone (19:45)

That's four starts in a row for Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain, who has conceded just one goal in nine games this season.

Craig Gordon made a series of excellent saves in his last outing, a 1-0 defeat at Ibrox on 29 December.

But does Brendan Rodgers prefer Bain's distribution from the back? I'm sure the boss would say it was one of those "good problems".

  15. Saints do well to keep Kerrpublished at 19:39 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2019

    Celtic v St Johnstone (19:45)

St Johnstone did some very good work during the week, persuading Jason Kerr to sign a new deal.

The 21-year-old has been an established starter at McDiarmid Park for a year now and has played a key role in helping his side keep 14 clean sheets in all competitions this season.

Barnsley were apparently sniffing around but the young centre-half won't be moving on anytime soon.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard on RangersTV: "There'll be a few changes in the line-up but I'll certainly pick a team that's strong enough to get the job done.

Cowdenbeath boss Gary Bollan was part of the BBC Sportsound commentary team on Sunday as Rangers swept Livingston aside.

He might not have had much sleep that night since Steven Gerrard's men turned on the style in West Lothian and really should have scored more than the three goals they managed.

It was only Livi's third home defeat of the season and the first by more than a single goal.

    Celtic v St Johnstone (19:45)

St Johnstone pushed Celtic hard when the clubs met in the League Cup this season, with the eventual trophy winners needing a late goal from Leigh Griffiths to progress.

However, it was a very different story just 10 days later when they met in the league at McDiarmid Park, with James Forrest running riot, banging in four first-half goals in a 6-0 rout.

It wasn't that long ago that these two were divisional rivals. Rangers will hope to improve on their last visit to Central Park, a Championship fixture which ended goalless in March 2015.

Rangers won the other three meetings that season and thumped Cowdenbeath 5-1 in the Scottish Cup at Ibrox in 2016.

    Cowdenbeath v Rangers (19:45)

What do you mean you've not been playing close attention to Cowdenbeath's form this season?

The Blue Brazil sit seventh in League Two. Not great but a significant improvement on the last place finishes of the past two seasons.

The part-time hosts already have more points in the bag this season than they managed across the entirety of the last campaign and they are 17 clear of poor old Albion Rovers at the foot of the table.
