West Brom are unwittingly caught up in it too.

Believe it or not, Bolton kicked off the 2018-19 season with victory against West Brom, back in the sunny, heady days of early August.

Goals from Josh Magennis, and a late winner from Yanic Wildschut gave the Trotters three big points, after Harvey Barnes had earlier levelled.

Teams are out... we're not far away. It's jolly cold.

BBC Sport's Simon Stone, who is at the ground, estimates about 3,000 to 4,000 Bolton fans were involved in the protest.

He says although some of the songs were abusive towards Anderson the protest itself was peaceful.

    Hefty numbers.

If West Brom are a pot of sizzling peri peri in attack, then by contrast Bolton could be a jug of lumpy bread sauce.

Yep, you guessed it. Bolton are the lowest scorers in the English Football League, just 18, and only Huddersfield in the Premier League have netted fewer.

Josh Magennis is their leading league marksman with four, with Will Buckley and Sammy Ameobi both netting three apiece. Only Ameobi starts tonight...

Only League Two highfliers Bury have scored as many English Football League goals - 55 - as West Bromwich Albion this season, as Darren Moore's promotion hopefuls continue to press for a Premier League return.

The Baggies have averaged two goals a game in the league, with 14-goal Dwight Gayle and 13-goal Jay Rodriguez spearheading the attack.

Only the return of Harvey Barnes to his parent club Leicester could be seen as a downside for the Throstles, as his nine goals and seven assists were a useful addition to the squad.

Apologies Baggies fans if you're feeling a bit ignored, but I'm sure there will be some sympathy with the Bolton fans' frustrations.

There is of course a football match going on as well tonight, so we'll have a quick look at that before we get underway.

There were chants, banners and paper fliers. One outstretched banner simply said 'you're killing our club'.

Club legend John McGinlay, who was barred by the club from media duties with BBC Radio Manchester tonight, also appeared, to show support to the fans.

Enough is enough is the general feeling around the place this evening.

It might sound like a bad 'straight-to-DVD' budget action flick, but actually it's quite an interesting tale - how, and why, did a bunch of Bolton fans end up trekking down to the little town of Nailsworth to see Forest Green Rovers take on Bury on Saturday?

It all started when Christian Doidge, who was on loan to Bolton from Rovers, returned to the club when his permanent transfer collapsed because of an EFL transfer embargo.

Rovers chairman Dale Vince made his feelings clear on the issue. Wanderers counterpart Ken Anderson followed suit with his response.

From that, Rovers produced t-shirts with a 'No Ken Do' slogan and invited Bolton fans to attend their game and sup a free pint...

Some fans did take the plunge. Now they're taking their protest to the chairman on home soil.

  15. 'It could get toxic'published at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2019

Bolton v West Brom (20:00 GMT)

    Jack Dearden
    BBC Radio Manchester's Bolton commentator

If West Brom are winning 3-0 late on then the atmosphere could get toxic. It's fair to say whatever plan there is at Bolton at the moment - on and off the field - it's not working.

I've covered Bolton for 20 years and it's been a pleasure and a privilege. But I've never known anything like this. The chairman has admitted himself that the club needs new investment,, external and says he is keen to help the process through. It feels like there are three options; liquidation, administration or the club is sold.

It's not great on the field - there has been one win in 17 league games - its a mess.

I don't understand the banning of local journalists, or a club legend like John McGinlay, the modern generation wouldn't have seen Nat Lofthouse play and he's the nearest thing. He's just given an opinion, which you could argue is what he is there to do.

Gary O'Neil is among the changes after he rejoined Bolton following the lifting of their transfer embargo, while Andrew Taylor, Jack Hobbs and Clayton Donaldson also come in for David Wheater, Jonathan Grounds, Will Buckley and Josh Magennis.

West Brom conversely are unchanged, as Darren Moore keeps faith with the team that drew at Norwich nine days ago.

Bolton: Alnwick, Taylor, Beevers, Hobbs, Olkowski, Ameobi, O'Neill, Lowe, Noone, Murphy, Donaldson

Subs: Matthews, Buckley, Wilson, Magennis, Wheater, Pritchard, Connell

How do all, thanks for joining us tonight as we finish off round 28 of the EFL Championship with Bolton and West Brom.

We've plenty to get through. Let's get on with it.

Monday Night Football is an institution in the United States. It's a brand; a beer-swilling, hot-wings-eating, footy-watching way of life.

We might not have the ice-cold lagers and lip-stinging-chicken to match, but we do have the football. Bolton v West Brom.

Championship strugglers Bolton Wanderers are desperate for a turnaround in form, amid fan protests and spats between their chairman Ken Anderson and others - including club legend John McGinlay and Forest Green chairman Dale Vince.

By contrast West Brom are in a good place. They have just one defeat on their record since 10 November and promotion is in their sights. They're six points behind second-place Norwich - with a superior goal difference.

It looks a foregone conclusion... but we all know football isn't played on paper (or pixels).
