Hardly a classic to round off the weekend's Championship action so far, but after the highs of Birmingham thrilling win against QPR and Aston Villa's comeback draw with Sheffield United, another humdinger would have been a bit greedy?

West Brom won't care about the entertainment factor. It was a thoroughly professional win and performance that frustrated Stoke, who have now only one victory from 10 games in all competitions.

Dwight Gayle's winner was a simple finish but it was a lovely free-kick routine that caught Stoke out.

"We knew it was going to be one of them games. Once we got the goal we knew we'd have to defend well and credit to the boys we did.

"The league is bunched up a tiny bit now, but February was always going to be a big month."

West Brom goalscorer Dwight Gayle told Sky Sports:

"The set-play was one we've been working on and luckily it came off today and we got the three points. The clean sheet was really important to us.

"Every game we go into we know how difficult it'll be. Hopefully we can just continue our run."

Stoke have one last chance but the ball sails behind for a goal kick. And that's that as Sam Johnstone restarts play.

West Brom are back up to fourth thanks to Dwight Gayle's 16th goal of the season.

As yellow cards go that was as blatant as it gets. Cynical stuff from Dwight Gayle who hacks down Oghenekaro Etebo.

There will be four minutes of added time for West Brom to hold on, or for Stoke to find an equaliser.

Sam Vokes hasn't had much service but that's a half-chance for the Stoke man. A looping cross from Tom Edwards on the right to the far post finds the big striker but his header is off target.

Stoke are really getting about West Brom as the visitors look to slow things down and knock the ball about in their own half. It's a dangerous game pressing with so many numbers.

If West Brom can pick a pass or two then they have the pace to exploit home side.

Another set-piece bears no fruit.

The one that did resulted in a peach of a first-half goal for Dwight Gayle. This one resulted in nothing of interest.

Sam Clucas has had a good game down the left for Stoke. He's a winger really, but has done well at left-back and got forward plenty.

Bolton manager Phil Parkinson is still adamant his side can avoid relegation, despite having one win from their past 21 Championship games and being four points from safety.

“I believe we can still do it; I wouldn’t be stood here if I didn’t think we could,” he insisted.

“But we have got to find a way for teams to come away saying ‘that Bolton side had something about it.’ I couldn’t say what we were today.

“We have got to find a way of playing and stick to it. We didn’t get any control like we have in recent games.

“We can’t afford to give cheap goals away. We are up against decent sides and we have got to give ourselves a chance.

“We looked like a disjointed side and we have played a lot better.”
