This was the first time Burnley have lost a Premier League game with Tom Heaton in goal since August 2017 against West Brom (0-1), ending a 10-game unbeaten streak for the goalkeeper in the competition.

Newcastle United

More from Rafa Benitez on Sean Longstaff: "He is someone that was training with us and doing well. We knew he would have a chance, he was lucky with our injuries to play sooner than we expected and he did well so we kept him in the team. He is working hard and listening to staff and learning which is the main thing. Having a young lad from the academy is a great example for people to follow. It is ideal for any club to have players through academy because they are cheaper and they give you more."

On Miguel Almiron: "He has given us some energy and mobility, he is dynamic. It is a question of time when he knows everyone better and he will have more chances. We have two options with Atsu too, so then you can change and manage.

"We still have to keep winning games and do what we are doing already, we continue to do the same great performance like today with great team spirit."

Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"It was a really poor first half, a long way short of where we have been. I don’t want to be too critical we just didn’t have the fight we have had recently. Credit to Newcastle they played well. Even not playing well we had two big chances.

"Gudmundsson has a shot and then he is fouled, I said to the referee if that’s in the middle of pitch it is a foul. We were at the races in the second half, we huffed and puffed a bit created some chances and a couple of scrambles."

On James Tarkowski chance:

“He goes for the big finish when he doesn’t have to, it is just a side foot really. He is in the right place at least, we were trying to be productive without being good.

“They’ve scored a worldie which calms them down, for the second one it looks like a free kick for us and then they score. These are minor complaints."

It is only one loss in nine…

"It is a fact. Our performances have been good we have earned the right to be where we are, we do have the odd game like this but it is a good reminder for the players. The mentality was better second half, we looked more like ourselves and we’ll take that into Saturday."

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I am very proud. The players deserve a lot of credit, we knew it would be a tough game against a physical team. We managed well in the first half and had control and then in the second half we have to defend crosses and long balls and we did it quite well. Still we could be better sometimes but overall it was a great performance and good team spirit. The fans appreciate that.

"The players understand what we want, if the game plan goes well or not, they manage well how the other team will react and how to control these things. We try to impose our game and we have to adapt and we can do it."

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan: "At the end of the day we only have ourselves to blame - they took their chances and we didn't take ours.

"Teams have been creating chances against us too easily which is frustrating and when we aren't taking chances it's difficult.

"As a team we haven't been good enough at either end of the field. It's been disappointing - not worrying - we have plenty of games to turn it around.

"We're going to leave no stone unturned in our quest to stay up. We need to take a look in the mirror to see if we're doing everything we can so on matchday we're ready. We've got big characters in the changing rooms and we're always assessing what needs to be done to turn this around. We're going to work harder than we ever have before to turn this around."

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Chris Hughton, speaking to BBC MOTD: "We all know Glenn Murray's qualities and there will be nobody more upset than him. But he's getting in the right positions and on another day he would have put that in and it changes everything.

"It's only us who can turn things around. We can't keep speaking about character after every game we need to make sure we get results. It doesn't matter how the results come sometimes you need a bit of fortune, resilience and grit.

"We weren't going to go through the season without having a difficult period and it's still in our hands. We have a good opportunity at home to Huddersfield on Saturday to start picking up points."

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Chris Hughton: "It was an even game and we had as many chances as they did - certainly in terms of possession and shots. But in the moments that mattered they put them away and we didn't.

"It was too many chances missed and we've come up against another goalkeeper who's made very good saves. But if we're not putting away the chances we have to be good in our own box and more resilient than we have been. Our level of performance is OK but if we're not scoring we have to make sure we aren't conceding.

"They've got some good footballers and we didn't start well but once we got into a rhythm we were good. But we showed enough character and had enough chances to win and on another day, when things are going for you, we would have got the result.

"Only ourselves can get ourselves out of it and we need to start doing that in the next game."

Quality stuff from Seamus Coleman tonight. He bossed it for Everton on the right wing. You can see from his touchmap how often he got forward.

Leicester City

Leicester attacker Harvey Barnes: "I'm enjoying myself. I'm confident and I want to keep expressing myself. It's a massive confidence boost for me knowing there's always options on for me when I go forward.

"Our back four has always been solid so we know as attackers we have freedom to express ourselves.

"I think everyone wants to impress the new boss but we just wanted to get that first result today and hopefully go on a run.

"[Rodgers] was pleased with the result and performance. He'll spend the next couple days introducing us to his style of play and how he wants us to perform.

"Our squad is very young so with the manager we have now that's only going to develop and progress, so for us we just have to keep impressing so we can stay in the side."

Newcastle United

Newcastle United goalscorer Sean Longstaff speaking to BBC Match of the Day:

"It is amazing, something you can’t really put into words. It is a great night for everyone it has done the world of the good in the table we can start looking up.

"We have been close in games all year, one or two goal games, we have always been in them so we haven’t changed much we have listened to the manager and luck and fortunes have started to go our way. Fans have been so good in the last month and the feel good factor is there at the minute.

"I think I have got four very good midfielders to compete with, for me to learn off, and that’s brilliant and has helped me so much, without them and the rest of the boys I wouldn’t be able to do it.

"It is amazing to be playing every week, it was my dream as a young boy. There is something different about night games at St James’ Park the atmosphere is the best in the world, I got lost in the goal. it was amazing and helped to pick up a big three points."

Cardiff have never won a midweek Premier League game (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), drawing three and losing seven.

They’ve scored just two goals in those 10 games and have conceded at least twice in each defeat.

Huddersfield may be 11 points from safety, but manager Jan Siewert is not giving up.

"I will have one beer tonight – maybe two. But we have a game on Saturday and there is still something possible."

Siewert said he never thought he had made the wrong decision to come to Huddersfield and replace David Wagner.

"I have already forgotten about the shot but I am happy to help the team with the first goal. It was a quite good 45 minutes and then we defend and we deserved to win.

"The last weeks were good for the whole team we train hard and work for each other and now the results are not too bad so we are quite confident. The next game is coming so we need more points."

Leicester City

Leicester caretaker manager Mike Stowell on MOTD: "It's a proud moment for me to get the win today. I tried to reiterate to them that they're good players and they're better than recent results. I told them to win ugly and they did.

"I spoke to them about the incoming manager and just said we had to concentrate on the game. He's given the players a boost he said he's exicted to get started.

"We've got a great environment here with good staff and good owners so it'll be a good place for Brendan.

"He's got great experience working with young players and we've got plenty. He's got a presentation for them to show them what he expects on and off the pitch so I look forward to seeing that as well.

"It's been a difficult season on and off the pitch but I think we should be seventh for the quality we have. Today's win broke four defeats on the spin so hopefully the shackles are off because there's still plenty of games to play - let's look upwards not down."

"It was a really good game, I knew it was going to be very tough but we took our chances in the first half and then the second half we kept their chances to a minimum.

"I say it everyday, I am in such a lucky position to be where I am, scoring and feeling the atmosphere tops it off.

"We know it is still very close and a couple of results can change it. We know we can change it by winning and it is a lot nicer to look up the table rather than down.

"I had about 10 people here, to have them here watching is a great night for me and the team.

"I can’t put the feeling into words just pure emotion. The atmosphere is amazing."

Cardiff City

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock said: "I didn’t think it was a bad game but it was just small individual errors and somebody who cost £50m punished us. If you make mistakes you get punished. I don’t want to name names but you have got to track your men and they didn’t do that for the first goal. One or two were very poor tonight and they looked like they could have done with a rest.

"I don’t think we are getting the rub of the green. I though there was a foul on Bobby Reid for the first goal and on another day we could have had a handball off Michael Keane. But we have got to make our own luck and we have 10 games to go.

"We will not go down without a fight. I know my team for the next game and we still have a chance. Wolves is a great place to play. I think we can go down there and give a good account of ourselves. We have a lot of character and we won't give in."
