    Argentina 0-0 Japan

Former England international defender on BBC Two

I'm really impressed with Argentina's discipline and team shape.

Estefania Banini is trying to drive them forward and any time they lose the ball they're getting back into shape.

To stay out of their own box and limit Japan to so few opportunities, all credit to them.

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

It's been all Japan, but they've got nothing to show for it.

Can Argentina cause an upset in the second half and get that all-important first goal?

We've seen how technical Japan are. But sometimes, when they get into the final third, their forward play becomes a bit too predictable.

Maybe a different type of player up front would help that, and they have got a wealth of talent in their attacking players.

That's that for the first half.

Argentina will be pleased with their performance so far, Japan will have wanted more.

  5. YELLOW CARD - Hina Sugitapublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 10 June 2019

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

    Hmmmm, a debatable one.

Sugita's on the ball and as she runs, her right arm hits Estefania Banini right in the face.

    Not sure she meant that.

Lorena Benitez, in particular, is doing a great job for Argentina in cutting off that passing line into Japan's front two. It's such an important job and sometimes goes unseen.

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

As I typed that last entry, Japan got a corner. Emi Nakajima took a short one, she received it back, and her resulting cross was cleared.

It's flung back in to the box and falls to skipper Saki Kumagai, but her first touch is poor and Argentina clear their lines yet again, albeit with a potential handball? Referee's not interested.

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

Five minutes to go until half-time. Let's have a goal before the whistle, yeah?

  10. YELLOW CARD - Risa Shimizupublished at 38 mins

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

Boos sound around the stadium as Risa Shimizu goes into the book with a poor challenge on Argentina captain Estefania Banini.

Banini crumples to the ground in pain but she's fine.

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

Sole Jaimes is so much bigger and stronger than most of the Japan players, meaning every time she challenges them, the referee blows for a foul.

It's starting to irritate her, by the looks of things.

We've not seen much of a cutting edge from Japan. They keep the ball well and pass through the thirds but we've not really seen anything in the final third.

What that does is allow Argentina into the game, they can get a little bit of confidence from not conceding then score a goal themselves.

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

Argentina are defending really well but are being a bit sloppy with their passing, giving the ball away.

Japan are capitalising on it, constantly pushing but chances have been few and far between.

That's not stopping the party in the stands though, they are LOVING it.

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

A great passage of play from Japan. It probably should have been finished off with a goal.

Sugasawa receives the ball, chests it down, but the opportunity for a shot isn't there so she passes it back out to Nakajima.

Another cross is put into the box, Vanina Correa punches out it but it finds Narumi Miura, only for her to send a shot flying over the bar.

Argentina will be happy with the opening 20 minutes.

They wouldn't have wanted to concede early because Japan keep the ball so well. If they just get a sniff that their opposition is weaker they let the gaps go and score goals.

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

    Cometti is back on.

  17. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

Argentina's superior physicality is already showing - they're bundling Japan over left, right and centre.

The latest challenge is from Aldana Cometti on Yuika Sugasawa, but it's Cometti who comes off worse. Looks like she took a bang to the mouth/nose, looks painful. She's gone off for treatment.

Argentina are actually defending well but at some point they need to be a threat going forward.

They need that outlet and the switch is definitely on for Argentina. They've done it once already. It's worked quite well and got them up the pitch.

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

As I mentioned earlier, Argentina skipper Estefania Banini is dubbed 'La Messi' back home.

I'm seeing why here, what a player! She's covering all corners of the pitch.

  20. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Argentina 0-0 Japan

Japan are enjoying the majority of the possession but Argentina are stringing a good few passes together.

In a good spell, Sole Jaimes brings the ball down in the box after a lofty cross from the right wing, but she's miles offside - and she knows it.
