Brilliant from Alex Morgan, turning the defender inside out on the edge of the box and smashing a finish into the far corner.

The USA need one more goal for their biggest ever margin of victory in a World Cup match which, before tonight, was a 7-0 triumph over Chinese Taipei in 1991.

And what about the biggest win by any team at a Women's World Cup? That currently goes to Germany, who thrashed Argentina 11-0 in 2007.

The crowd certainly want more goals.

Yesterday at Thailand's pre-match press conference, I asked their head coach if they'd allowed themselves to dream about beating the USA and how big an achievement it would be if they could pull off a shock.

Upon hearing that, one of our American colleagues in the press room sniggered, chucking out loud at even the mere idea that Thailand might get something out of this game.

A bit rude? Maybe, but now the American press' optimism for a huge margin of victory has been fully justified.

  14. goal

    GOAL - USA 7 (SEVEN)-0 Thailandpublished at 56 mins

    Rose Lavelle

    Oh man.

Samantha Mewis goes from goalscorer to provider, cutting the ball back into the box for Rose Lavelle to sweep in her second of the game.

    Getting embarrassing for Thailand now.

  15. goal

GOAL - USA 6-0 Thailandpublished at 54 mins

    Samantha Mewis

    Oh dear.

Three goals in four minutes for the USA, Thailand have capitulated.

Rose Lavelle's blocked shot falls nicely for Samantha Mewis to sweep in from six yards out.

USA will be looking at the World Cup's record score with is 11-0.

  16. goal

GOAL - USA 5-0 Thailandpublished at 52 mins

    Alex Morgan

    Five star performance from USA.

It is too each for Jill Ellis' side.

A free-kick is curled in from the right, the Thailand defence is all over the place and Alex Morgan converts from close range.

  17. goal

GOAL - USA 4-0 Thailandpublished at 50 mins

    Samantha Mewis

800th goal in Women's World Cup football.

Samantha Mewis has been really impressive today and deservedly gets her goal.

She gets a pass on the edge of the box after fine work by skipper Megan Rapinoe, has a pop and it flies into the net via a deflection off Natthakarn Chinwong.

    When you're luck is out...

But Thailand do manage to break free with pace.

A cross from the right, though, is straight into the hands of goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

    USA 3-0 Thailand

BBC Sport at Stade Auguste-Delaune, Reims

At half-time, the on-pitch announcers here in Reims threw to a 'dance cam' spotting fans showing their moves in the stands. They know their audience tonight all right.

Meanwhile, the tournament mascot was swaying to Daft Punk's Get lucky and then doing the Macarena, and it must be said, that chicken sure has some moves.

Yes, 'Ettie', the mascot, is a chicken. Apparently her Dad (no, seriously) was a rooster called Footix who was the mascot here for the men's World Cup of 1998.
