Mark Davies: I've said many times VAR will damage the game. Does the ball cross the line is fine, it is a yes or a no. Decisions of opinion should be left to the referee.

France have failed to have a single shot on target in the first half of their last two games. Their first shot on target in their last game - a 1-0 win against Nigeria - did not arrive until the 65th minute.

They do look solid but lacking a bit in the final third.

It looked like Valérie Gauvin had given France the lead against Brazil.

However, VAR had other ideas...

Goalless at the break with VAR yet again the main talking point.

France are pressing in these closing minutes of the half. Viviane Asseyi has the ball on the right, she puts in a cross but it deflects off a defender and goes through to keeper Barbara.

That's likely to be the last action of the half.

Loose ball across the Brazil area and Amel Majri is on it in a flash. She shoots but fires well over.

That VAR incident is, incidentally, what has got people talking the most. This was the moment the referee was watching replays of the most.

The 45 minutes are up and there's be SIX minutes of additional time thanks to the earlier VAR shenanigans.

Debinha gets lucky as she runs into a France player and the ball deflects into her team-mate Cristiane's path. She runs into the box and tries to beat Sarah Bouhaddi at her near post but the France keeper gets her leg to it.

Elliott Gilmore: Should be a red for Renard of France. If not for the tackle itself, the sheer fact of walking away from the red and not even acknowledging the card.

Into the final few minutes of what has been - VAR aside - a rather dull first half of football. Both sides are doing a decent job of cancelling each other out.

Howard Varney: I think VAR needs something equivalent to the "umpire's call" principle in cricket, where the on-field decision automatically stands if it's marginal. Trying to get perfect decisions all the time will create as many controversies as it solves.

Hatters: Said when it happened it was handball. Not rocket science.

Brazil win a corner and Marta whips it in low towards the near post. Cristiane directs a good header at goal but Sarah Bouhaddi is well placed to make the save.

Stackingblocs: Well, well well, the French all of a sudden don't like VAR. Admittedly that should have been a goal, but they shouldn't have had a penalty in their group game. Maybe the VAR team have been told to balance out the rubbish decisions...

Wendie Renard goes in heavy on Debinha. The Brazil players are fuming and Thaisa is demanding the referee shows Renard the card. Renard tries to walk away nonchalantly but is pursued by the ref, who does indeed show the France defender a yellow card.

Peter Shields: I absolutely HATE this VAR - it is a complete joke - it should only be used for definite, unquestionable goals and off sides NOT for an opinion after the event - I am done with it now - it's a waste of time watching football any more!
