A free kick for France is sent towards the far post for Wendie Renard, who loops a header towards goal but Barbara is alert to the danger and gathers to a chorus of boos. She has become the pantomime villain. A bit harsh as it was VAR that ruled no goal, she was just doing her job.

That's a brave decision. I think Gauvin had a right to go for it because the ball was not in the hands of the keeper.

It's been quite a tame opening. These two teams are still sussing each other out.

Marta is looking lively in this game, certainly more so than she did in the 1-0 win against Italy in Brazil's final group game. She did, of course, score in that game but was quiet for long periods.

France attack in numbers but Viviane Asseyi's ball into the box is a disappointing one and Barbara strides off her line to catch comfortably.

No shots on target for either side and just one off target apiece. Cagey is how I'd sum up the first 18 minutes or so.

Marta's delivery from the corner is good but France goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi sticks both hands up in the air and claims above a crowd of players.

Fifteen minutes in and no VAR, sorry Sulaimon.

Sulaimon goes early on VAR bingo, you've got two minutes for it to be mentioned or otherwise you are eliminated.

It's been quite a tame encounter so far, so not seeing a likely flash point appearing any time soon.

Sulaimon Adelekan: VAR will be mentioned in the 15th minute I guess. I am not a big fan of the VAR. It's major problem is the inconsistency with the decisions.

Now France win a free kick some 30 yards from goal as Kadidiatou Diani is fouled.

Amandine Henry and Amel Majri stand over the ball and it is the France skipper who hits it, firing just over the bar. Decent effort given the distance.

First real opportunity for Brazil as Marta gets a bit of space and goes for goal but scuffs her effort just wide.
