Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has beaten Trent Alexander-Arnold twice inside the opening 15 minutes, and those two runs have lit the fuse where the noise coming from the home fans is concerned.

Fine wing play from Nathaniel Mendez-Laing! He has Trent Alexander-Arnold on toast, skipping by the youngster and putting over a fine cross which Junior Hoilett chests down. He goes for goal - but Andrew Robertson does well to make a flying block.

His best Bank Holiday shift since a 9-7 stocking sandwiches at M&S.

Manchester United

Manchester United full-back Ashley Young, speaking to Sky Sports: "From the first whistle we weren't good enough. We just weren't right and obviously playing an Everton team full of confidence.

"I don't think that was a Man Utd performance. It's disappointing and we have got four games left, we have got to dust ourselves down - we've got a big one on Wednesday.

"It will show our character, I know we have great talent and it's a big one for us on Wednesday now.

"You set your set your stall to go and be on the front foot and it just wasn't that. You still think if you get that first goal you can get something out of the game but it wasn't meant to be.

"It's crucial when you get the first goal. We couldn't concentrate on them it was us playing out there. When you're a Man Utd team, we had a first shot on goal late in the second half, it's not good enough."

Jurgen Klopp joins Neil Warnock on touchline patrol duty as he wants more urgency from his side. Cardiff having a good spell of possession although Sadio Mane does punctuate a flurry of Liverpool passing with a wild shot over the top.

Really open start as now Palace threaten from another set-piece. Scott Dann heads down into the goalmouth and Shkodran Mustafi does brilliantly to clear away over his own bar under heavy pressure.

Chance! Best one yet for Arsenal. More good work down the right from Carl Jenkinson ends with a ball into the area, tricky height for Mo Elneny and all he can do is shovel a hip-level volley over the top. Tricky one to tame.

Everton

Everton defender Seamus Coleman: “It's really come together. When the atmosphere’s like that at Goodison it’s a very tough place to come.

"[Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson] have been great in front of goal. Hopefully they can keep going until the end of the season.

"Consistency has been our problem all season. We’ve had a couple of good results and then a bad result. We have to go to places like Fulham – no disrespect – and get the win.

"I’ve never doubted Marco Silva throughout the season. It’s always going to take time to stamp his own style on the team. We had a sticky spell but it’s really come together."

A really good, competitive opening as you'd expect. No quarter given, as Neil Warnock has his first showdown with the fourth official. He wanted a foul on Victor Camarasa but referee Martin Atkinson was happy to let it flow.

IF it were to end a draw in Cardiff, Liverpool would end the day level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table but in second place on goal difference.

Cardiff would still be in the drop zone, two points behind Brighton. Oumar Niasse does his best to cause some Liverpool hearts to flutter as he gets away down the left but he runs out of space before he can put a cross in.

Good pressure from Palace and a lovely cut-back from the right causes havoc inside the Arsenal area, it falls to Max Meyer and his shot is well charged down. Lively opening!

Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking to Sky Sports: "We’re way off where we want to be. When you lose in the league like we did here, everyone sees that we have a big job to do.

"This club has been down before, we’ve just got to pick ourselves up. It might not happen overnight, but it's going to happen.

"You want to see the team express themselves. The goals were easy, we were sloppy on the ball. We cannot hide, we just have to step up and say we have to improve.

"We have to win all four games, then we might have a chance [of finishing in the top four]. It’s a big ask, but we can do it. We can’t just talk about it, we’ve got to do it."

First sight of goal for the Reds sees Roberto Firmino fire a shot into the side-netting but the Cardiff backline held their line perfectly - the Brazilian was offside.
