  3. And finally...published at 12:51 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

This year, Rodgers' third season on the continent with Celtic, was a bit of a damp squib if we are being honest.

Champions League football was not secured for the first time under the Northern Irishman, who instead took his troops into the Europa League.

The Scottish champions recorded a credible home victory over RB Leipzig and finished second in their section, but they required a fair amount of fortune to do so. Read all about it HERE.

Their run ended last week, though, with a 3-0 aggregate defeat to Valencia.

After a season in the Champions League for Celtic with Rodgers, they finished bottom of their section without a win.

The following campaign not just brought an improvement, but their first away win in the Champions League for five years with a 3-0 victory over Anderlecht.

Celtic finished third to progress to the Europa League, only to get knocked out by Zenit St Petersburg at the last 32 stage.

It was on 28 September 2016 that the full force of the Brendan Rodgers era was felt on the European stage Celtic. Exiled from Europe's top competition under Ronny Deila, the Scots announced they were back with a bang at home during a pulsating 3-3 draw with English cracks Manchester City at Celtic Park.

  6. A turbulent take offpublished at 12:42 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

It was not a swift start for Celtic in Europe under Brendan Rodgers.

His first game came against Gibraltar-based part-timers Lincoln Red Imps. Rodgers and his team flew straight from their training camp in Maribor, Slovenia, only to suffer an embarrassing 1-0 defeat.

They of course recovered to qualify for the Champions League. However, it was a tough return for Rodgers to Europe, Barcelona dishing out a whopping 7-0 defeat in the opening group game at the Nou Camp.

  7. Rodgers' European record at Celticpublished at 12:39 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2019

Brendan Rodgers cited European football as a big focus for him when he was unveiled as Celtic manager in 2016.

In his first campaign, he stated he had a three-year plan to get Celtic into the last 16 of the Champions League. After three campaigns, it didn't happen for the Northern Irishman.

Stuart McIver: Poor timing. But I think the fact the board didn’t back Brendan Rodgers fully in the summer or the winter window has pushed him to keep an eye on other jobs. Peter Lawwell had to take the blame along with the board. The team is ageing and is going to need major investment.

Brendan Rodgers has rebuilt his reputation in Scotland after his ultimate failings at Liverpool and is certainly not short of personality or charisma.

The 46-year-old also plays attractive, attacking football and shares in Claude Puel's penchant for promoting young talent. And after three years and seven trophies - to date - maybe Rodgers will feel that the time is right to leave.

Brendan Rodgers had talks with Leicester City last night and a source close to the deal confirmed to me this morning that it’s all but done. Rodgers himself remains in the midlands for now.

Neil Lennon is likely to take charge until the of the season, at least. Fans outside Celtic Park are extremely disappointed and angry but those I’ve spoken to would welcome back Lennon.

It's the news the Celtic fans had been dreading. Since taking over in 2016 he has delivered everything domestically - the double treble was secured at the end of last season and the club were on the way to making it three in a row.

But there was always a feeling the former Liverpool boss wanted to try his luck once again in English football's top flight.

Suggestions he wasn't getting the boardroom backing he was looking for may also have hastened his exit - but it leaves Celtic looking to replace one of their most successful managers.

Former Celtic striker and BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has had his say. Blimey.

David McCartney: If Brendan Rodgers was given any amount of freedom in the transfer market maybe he would stay. There's always a dreamier job, eh?

Kenny O’Hara: Regardless of the timing, I think Brendan Rodgers should leave Celtic with much appreciation and thanks of every Celtic fan. These days Scottish football teams can't make marquee signings but appointing someone like Rodgers as manager is as good as it gets. He will go down in the history books as the double treble manager.

Alex Munro: Happy. Right man for Leicester: good man manager, gets teams playing decent football and strong head for youth.

Ian Elston: Thank Brendan. Welcome Neil Lennon back till summer; invite Stevie Clarke to take over.

William Speirs: Obviously he was always going to leave. Only so much you can do on a limited budget. Good luck to him.
