How on earth do you follow the last 10 minutes of that? With a penalty shootout of course!

Aiden McGeady scored the first and last goal of that 120 minutes, with Nathan Thompson and Jamal Lowe netting in between for Portsmouth.

What a final it's been for this capacity crowd at Wembley.

    My word.

What an incredible finish to extra time there.

Seems harsh that someone will have to go home runners-up tonight and especially after that finish from Jamal Lowe looked to have settled it for Portsmouth.

Fair play to Sunderland, they dug deep there and just when they needed a hero, Aiden McGeady had the composure to net a leveller.

Brilliant entertainment for the record-breaking crowd.

    ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE!!!

He's barely been in the game since a sensational first half but when it matters most, Aiden McGeady keeps his cool and gives Sunderland a late, late equaliser.

Charlie Wyke laid the ball off to him - Matt Clarke tries to clear the shot but cannot.

What a goal and what a finish from Jamal Lowe.

Worthy of winning any final at any ground.

Don't think many Sunderland fans will argue that Portsmouth haven't deserved to lead this game on the balance of chances since half-time of normal time.

Four minutes left of extra-time and now it's Sunderland who for the first time are chasing the game.

They haven't really been on top since the first half of this final, which feels a long time ago now.

Can they raise themselves once more?

    PORTSMOUTH BREAK THE DEADLOCK!

Jamal Lowe takes down a long ball and gets the better of Jack Baldwin before lobbing Sunderland keeper Jon McLaughlin - who is in no man's land.

Great battling and composure from the Pompey frontman and it could win them the Checkatrade Trophy.

  11. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 113 mins

    Portsmouth 1-1 Sunderland

Brett Pitman almost makes the most of a mix-up in the Sunderland box, but keeper Jon McLaughlin manages to clear on the slide.

It's not just physical tiredness on show!

Portsmouth use their fourth sub - Ben Close limps off and is replaced by Anton Walkes.

Portsmouth and Sunderland have 10 minutes to find a goal or we're heading to penalties.

Right now I can't see it coming, but it's far from a dead game.

Both sides seem full of running, which is encouraging.

Sunderland's manager Jack Ross is a typically animated character on the touchline, but I don't think I've ever seen Pompey boss Kenny Jackett this pumped up.

He's living and breathing this Wembley occasion. And he's got a few visits on his CV already.

Lee Cattermole collides with the shoulder of Portsmouth striker Brett Pitman and temporarily stays down.

Does the Sunderland hardman require treatment? Of course not.

But it's Pompey coming forward for now...

Looking a like a few weary limbs out there despite the offer of an extra substitution for both sides, which Sunderland have of course already used.

One side attempts a counter than a loose touch or a stray pass here and there seemingly hands the baton to the other.

Is that a sign we might be destined for penalties to decide it?

No 15 minute intervals during extra-time!

  17. HALF-TIMEpublished at 16:43 British Summer Time 31 March 2019

    Portsmouth 1-1 Sunderland

    Half-time in extra-time - no breakthrough yet.

Sunderland have come back into it after an awful second half, though Jamal Lowe probably had the best chance for Portsmouth - shooting wide when well-placed.

Are we on for a penalty shootout?

Brett Pitman shows some great hold-up play to get Pompey up the pitch and they work it left for Lee Brown, whose shot is held easily by Jon McLaughlin.

Just over a minute left in the first half of extra-time.

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 102 mins

    Portsmouth 1-1 Sunderland

Gareth Evans has been a revelation for Portsmouth since coming on in the second half, but blots his copybook with a dive just outside the box.

It was obvious and Dean Whitestone took correct action. No need for it.

Jamal Lowe spurns a half-chance for Pompey.

Ben Close wriggles away from Lee Cattermole and finds Oliver Hawkins, who tees up Lowe for a shot that goes wide.

Sunderland go straight up the other end and have a throw deep in enemy territory.
