FT: Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

That wraps up our coverage of Chelsea's ultimately unsuccessful bid to reach the Women's Champions League final this afternoon.

Despite a brave effort, the Blues came up just short against reigning champions Lyon.

Sadly for Emma Hayes' side, they cannot seek revenge next season - they can only finish third in the Women's Super League, which is not good enough for Champions League qualification.

But if today's showing is anything to go by, they will be back. And so will we.

Until then, thanks for reading our coverage, and goodbye.

  2. Lyon are Budapest-boundpublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 28 April 2019

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

So it's Lyon, not Chelsea, who will head to Hungary hungry for more silverware.

The French club will face first-time finalists Barcelona in the 18 May showpiece in Budapest.

Can they win Europe's premier title four years running?

  3. British wait goes onpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 28 April 2019

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

So, it's Lyon's fourth straight final. Their eighth final since 2010. But Chelsea pushed them all the way.

Nonetheless, the wait for a British finalist goes on, with none since Arsenal's quadruple win in 2007.

  4. 'We went toe-to-toe with them'published at 16:06 British Summer Time 28 April 2019

FT: Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (agg 2-3)

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes told Chelsea TV:

“You tell me a team in the last 10 years that has gone toe-to-toe with Lyon? No one has. I think we gave them the fright of their life.

“I think if we had stronger officials today – I thought it was a handball (from Lucy Bronze) and I thought the referee let Lyon bully us to slow the game down.

“But we’ve had enough chances. I thought Lyon were dead on their feet and I can’t ask any more of my players.

“Women’s football is changing, the days of Lyon are dominating are over."

I've thoroughly enjoyed that game. The quality on show nowadays is fantastic for the women's game.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, it was just one game too far.

So it's Lyon who will face Barcelona in the Women's Champions League final in Budapest on 18 May.

But they know they have been in a game today.

Own goals have proven to be Chelsea's downfall over the two legs.

  8. FULL-TIMEpublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 28 April 2019

    Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

Lyon keeper Sarah Bouhaddi makes a superb claim from Maren Mjelde's inviting cross - and that's it.

Heartbreak for Chelsea, who did more than enough to force extra time, but just could not find the goal to bring the aggregate scores level.

They can be proud of their efforts, though.

That could be Chelsea's last chance.

Bethany England slips Fran Kirby into the right of the box but her ball across goal is out of reach of any of her teammates.

  10. Postpublished at 90+3 mins

    Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

Lyon have defended excellently this past 10 minutes.

Lucy Bronze wins a far-post tussle with Bethany England to nod away Fran Kirby's cross and is fouled in the process.

    Valuable seconds slipping away.

  11. What a misspublished at 90+2 mins

    Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

    That should have been it.

Shanice van de Sanden finds Ada Hegerberg unmarked 10 yards out but the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner balloons horribly over.

    Will Lyon regret that?

  12. GREAT SAVE!published at 90 mins

    Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

Lyon could have sealed it then. Eugenie Le Sommer strides into the left side of the area and drills across goal but Chelsea keeper Ann-Katrin Berger makes a cracking fingertip save to keep the hosts in the tie.

Five minutes on the board. Still time.

    Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

Lengthy stoppage here after a collision between Chelsea's Bethany England and Lyon's Griedge Mbock Bathy means both players require treatment.

There should be a few minutes added on.

Lyon have been in a game today.

Whatever the result, Chelsea are still building as a team, and they will get better.

Lyon have the ball exactly where they want it now, a swift counter earning a throw-in deep in Chelsea's half.

Time is running out for Emma Hayes' side to find the goal that will send the tie into extra time.

  16. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 84 mins

    Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

Karen Carney's curler hitting the bar, Mille Bright and Drew Spence unable to score from close range - Chelsea really have had chances to have won not only this game but the tie too.

Lyon bring on Japan captain Saki Kumagai for Amandine Henry. The visitors could well shut up shop for these final few minutes.

  17. CHANCEpublished at 81 mins

    Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

Today's crowd of 4,670 is Chelsea's largest attendance at Kingsmeadow.

Can they suck the ball into the Lyon net?

Oh, they shouldn't have needed to, Drew Spence should have done it on her own. An Erin Cuthbert free-kick drops to the substitute unmarked at the far post but she can't sort her feet out quick enough and bundles the chance wide.

  18. CLOSE!published at 79 mins

    Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

Lovely move from Lyon as Shanice van de Sanden touches Dzsenifer Marozsan's searching pass into the path of Ada Hegerberg.

The Norway striker had teammates in support but unleashed a rocket from 25 yards that Chelsea keeper Ann Katrin-Berger was relieved to see rustle the side netting.

  19. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 77 mins

    Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes must take risks now - her side must score or they are out.

She rolls the dice by bringing on forward Drew Spence for Sophie Ingle. Three up front for the Blues now.

  20. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 74 mins

    Chelsea 1-1 Lyon (2-3 agg)

Big, big let-off for Chelsea as Dzsenifer Marozsan inswinging corner hits the crossbar, in almost a replica of Lyon's second goal in the first leg.

Moments before that, Chelsea keeper Ann-Katrin Berger had tipped over an attempted chip from Eugenie Le Sommer.

As Chelsea chase the goal they need to take the tie to extra time, gaps are beginning to open up at the back and Lyon look perfectly capable of exploiting them.
