  1. Advantage Aston Villapublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 11 May 2019

First-leg result: Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom

Thanks for joining me this afternoon. Villa and West Brom will go again at The Hawthorns on Tuesday then, but with Villa a goal up and the Baggies without their top scorer Dwight Gayle.

Dean Smith's side turned things around in the final 15 minutes of today's first leg.

We'll see you later for tonight's two remaining play-off ties, which should both be crackers. Until then, cheers.

Kerohawk: Emotionally drained but what a great result to take in to Tuesday! Gayle’s red feels almost as important to Villa as the goals in my opinion! UTV!!

Johnny Magrinho: That's two Fantasy assists for Grealish in a huge game. If Villa go up he'll be the first name in my team that's for sure. Pretty sure there's a lot of other people out there thinking the same thing though - he's a quality, quality player.

If you enjoyed that first Championship play-off semi-final first leg, make sure you join us again later as Derby host Leeds in the other.

That one should be pretty tasty too, plus there's Sunderland v Portsmouth to follow in League One afterwards.

Dwight Gayle's red card reduces their chances dramatically. He is the man for Albion, especially at home. They'll be without him now and it's going to be a massive ask.

Looking ahead to Tuesday's second leg, Conor Hourihane adds:

"We won't be going there for a draw. We'll go in to it like any other game, trying to win it."

Speaking about Jack Grealish, Villa goalscorer Conor Hourihane tells Sky Sports:

"Jack's the best player in the league in my opinion. He's got so much quality. He's probably too good for the league."

I don't think it was a great Villa performance, Albion's game plan for 60 minutes worked perfectly.

All of a sudden, Conor Hourihane scores a great goal and Tammy Abraham did exactly what was needed from him.

  8. Reaction - Grealish on 'good win'published at 14:36 British Summer Time 11 May 2019

First-leg result: Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom

Villa midfielder Jack Grealish tells Sky Sports: "Every time I come on the pitch, I look at the players around me and I think we're going to win.

"It's a good win. But West Brom are a great side and we know it's going to be a hostile atmosphere at The Hawthorns on Tuesday.

"[This] is a Premier League club. We had the pain last year. Hopefully we can go one step further and go to the Premier League."

It was a cracking game, overall. All the physicality that you'd expect from a local derby, with flashes of quality that you'd expect from two top-six sides.

It's advantage Aston Villa. If they avoid defeat at The Hawthorns on Tuesday, they'll be into the Championship play-off final at Wembley on 27 May.

  11. CLOSE!published at 90+6 mins

    Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom

Great feet from Tammy Abraham and then good skill from Jack Grealish present Andre Green with a chance in the area, but he fires just wide.

    Villa keep pressing.

    Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom

This is the 170th meeting between these two teams in all competitions. Villa won 77 of the previous 169, with the Baggies enjoying 55 victories.

The hosts are around two minutes away from getting their 78th, and surely one of their most important.

    Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom

    Tony Brown

That is a stupid sending-off for me. That could kill Albion off because they'll be without him in the second leg and they're not half the side without him.

  17. RED CARD (second yellow, Dwight Gayle)published at 88 mins

    Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom

This could be massive. Dwight Gayle is off and he'll miss the second leg, while West Brom are already without suspended forward Hal Robson-Kanu.

Gayle - who has been living dangerously in this second half - is shown a second yellow for sliding in late on Villa keeper Jed Steer as he tried to get on the end of a cross.

    Aston Villa 2-1 West Brom

Those two quick goals from Villa have turned this first leg on it's head.

Tammy Abraham's 26th of the season could yet prove to be his biggest goal for Villa.

But West Brom won't be too disheartened by a one-goal away defeat if it stays like this, with 90 minutes to come at The Hawthorns. It's still on a knife edge.

Why anyone should be surprised that this game might have a dramatic sting in the tale is beyond me!

But, even by the standards of this crazy Championship season, there have not been many more dramatic three minutes' worth of action than that.

Conor Hourihane's stunning strike, followed so quickly by Tammy Abraham's commendable coolness from the spot, under the added pressure of the home fans chanting his name as he stepped up to take it.

Is there still more to come though?
