A place at Wembley is all that will matter to Sunderland - good job too because no one will remember this as a play-off classic.

That said the defensive display by the Black Cats was mightily impressive. They frustrated Pompey and are Wembley-bound at the end of May.

If you're joining us late, Sunderland have moved a step closer to an immediate return to the Championship as they saw off Portsmouth to reach the League One play-off final.

After a goalless and fractious second leg, Chris Maguire's volley from the first leg at the Stadium of Light was enough to get them to Wembley.

Sunderland striker Chris Maguire tells Sky Sports: "It's been tough against Portsmouth every time we've played them and there's been goals in every match - but tonight was a 0-0 draw and it was the goal in the first leg that's got us there in the end.

"It was a great performance from the team and I think one that we deserved."

Sunderland boss Jack Ross tells Sky Sports: "We wanted to have some control of the game. As it went on we were more and more comfortable and we found a way of winning the tie over two legs.

"The players have put an awful lot of work in over the season.

"To turn around something that has been heading in the wrong direction is not easy and we have made great stride this season and done that."

Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole tells Sky Sports: "That is the performance you want at 1-0 up after the first leg.

"The mentality was really strong. We have had tough games against Portsmouth and we deserve to go through.

"Everyone has given everything this season. We have worked really hard."

Sunderland have done it. They are through to the League One play-off final.

It's been a pretty dismal game but the away fans are celebrating with everything they have. They just don't care.

Their team defended brilliantly and will face either Charlton or Doncaster at Wembley.

The Black Cats have defended superbly tonight and really restricted and frustrated their hosts.

A big cheer goes up among the home fans. There will be six minutes of stoppage time.

That's plenty of time. But they need the ball first and they keep giving away free-kicks.

Pompey's James Vaughan is a very lucky man to still be on pitch. He charges into the back of Bryan Oviedo and smashes the defender to the floor .

Vaughan has already been booked and that looked like a yellow card all day long.

He jinks away down the right and the ball is worked into the box, forcing keeper Jon McLaughlin to come out and knock the ball away from danger.
