We hoped for a classic. It's not even reached semi-decent yet.

But there's still 25 minutes to go. It's certainly been tasty and could yet provide drama.

I am sure we haven't heard the last of that incident. It all seemed pretty unsavoury.

The police are now getting involved too. Anyway, back to the football...

Different half, but not much difference in the pattern of play, to be honest.

Portsmouth still frantically trying to find a way through this robust Sunderland defence and, as they push themselves that bit more, spaces begin to open up as the game gets stretched.

As the minutes tick by, the Black Cats will be more than happy to keep it this cagey.

  9. Postpublished at 62 mins

    Portsmouth 0-0 Sunderland (agg 0-1)

That's pretty unpleasant. Sunderland's Luke O'Nien goes tumbling into the crowd after a challenge and there's a few heated words with the fans.

I am not sure what is going on but the ref is involved and so are the stewards.

    Portsmouth 0-0 Sunderland (agg 0-1)

A rare bit of quality out wide ends with Sunderland winning a corner. Grant Leadbitter delivers a deep outswinger and it's easily cleared. An hour is almost up.

They do exactly as expected - no disguising at all. And Sunderland have little trouble clearing their lines.

  12. Postpublished at 56 mins

    Portsmouth 0-0 Sunderland (agg 0-1)

Portsmouth have responded well after their slow start to the second half. They win a free-kick and will no doubt launch it into the box from 50 yards out.

  13. CLOSE!published at 53 mins

    Portsmouth 0-0 Sunderland (agg 0-1)

Jon McLaughlin makes another decent save, but once again Pompey are not clinical enough in front of goal.

Oli Hawkins sends his close-range header too close to the Sunderland keeper.

  14. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 51 mins

    Portsmouth 0-0 Sunderland (agg 0-1)

Portsmouth make the first change. Viv Solomon-Otobor makes way for top-scorer Jamal Lowe.

There's been so much nonsense - the latest sees Nathan Thompson throw himself to the floor after an innocuous challenge from Charlie Wyke. Some of it has been pretty embarrassing.

A good ball over the top has Charlie Wyke tearing down the left but he can't get there in time and ball runs out of play for a goal kick.

It's been a good start by Sunderland, similar to how they began the first half.

They are knocking the ball about pretty well. maybe things will calm down a tad?

  17. Postpublished at 46 mins

    Portsmouth 0-0 Sunderland (agg 0-1)

A chance almost immediately for Sunderland.

Bryan Oviedo blasts a first-time shot over the bar from the edge of the box after the ball breaks invitingly to him from a long throw.

  18. KICK-OFFpublished at 20:50 British Summer Time 16 May 2019

    Portsmouth 0-0 Sunderland (agg 0-1)

Sunderland are off to Wembley as things stand.

The Black Cats have only lost five league games all season so Pompey have a tough task to stop their visitors.

    Can Sunderland see this through?

Tim Salmon: how times change - can't be more than 8 / 9 years since these 2 sides were both in the #premiership, external playing against each other? and both still big clubs

You're not far wrong, Tim. Prior to this season, these teams last met in a league fixture in 2010 and that was, indeed, in the top flight.

That game ended 1-1 and three players were red carded, including - shock - Sunderland's Lee Cattermole.

There are many wonderful things about a May Bank Holiday weekend - and three play-off finals in three days has to be up there with the very best of those things.

The League One final on Sunday, 26 May is sandwiched in between Saturday's fourth-tier showpiece and the Championship decider on Monday.

Tranmere Rovers, Newport County, Aston Villa and Derby County have already made it to Wembley... but which pair will be joining them?
