We've just had the national anthems and there was plenty of passion from the players, pretty much every one of them singing their hearts out.

Pre-match formalities done, all that's left is for the referee to get the game under way.

Not only do the Netherlands have a rock at the back in the shape of Virgil van Dijk but they are also pretty handy at the other end of the pitch too. They have scored at least twice in their last four Nations League games.

Just under 10 minutes to go until kick off...

You can't mention Portugal versus Netherlands without referencing the feisty 2006 World Cup match between the sides.

It featured four red cards and 16 yellows. Portugal won the game - described as the 'Battle of Nuremberg' - 1-0.

The Netherlands fans are clearly keen to make up for having missed out on last summer's World Cup. They have traveled in massive numbers for this game.

The Netherlands are certainly back on the up after their dismal qualifying campaign for last year's World Cup that saw them fail to make the finals.

Since Ronald Koeman took charge in February 2018, the Oranje have lost only three of his 13 matches, winning six and drawing the other four.

Cristiano Ronaldo says he still has "a lot to give" as he prepares to play in his third international final

The 34-year-old Juventus forward was on the losing side at Euro 2004 but triumphed at Euro 2016. He scored a hat-trick against Switzerland to put Portugal through to today's final.

"I still feel good despite being 34 years of age," said Ronaldo. "It is the preparation and my work ethic. The most important thing is your head, to feel motivated and happy, and to follow my path as a player, because I think I still have a lot to give and I feel very good."

Speaking of Cristiano Ronaldo, you'd think a goal had been scored given the volume of the cheers just for him appearing on the pitch to warm up.

Will we witness another Ronaldo masterclass tonight?

A quite incredible statistic from Liverpool's quite incredible season - no opposition player completed a dribble past Virgil van Dijk in any of his last 64 appearances in all competitions for the Reds.

He'll have a real job on to keep Cristiano Ronaldo at bay, though.

Portugal are looking to become the first European nation to host and win a final of a major competition since France beat Brazil 3-0 in the final of the 1998 World Cup.

Form suggests they have a good chance of doing that, having only lost two of their 13 previous international encounters with Netherlands in all competitions (W7 D4).

However, one of those defeats came in their most recent meeting in Geneva, a 3-0 loss back in March 2018.

Three changes for Portugal as Jose Fonte, Danilo and Gonçalo Guedes come in. They replace Pepe, Ruben Neves and Joao Felix. Cristiano Ronaldo, fresh from scoring a semi-final hat-trick, takes his place in the first XI.

The Netherlands, meanwhile, name the same side that beat England in the semi-final.

Thank goodness for Jordan Pickford, eh?

If he didn't smash home a penalty and then save one soon after then we'd probably all still be sat here wondering just what more we could have done with the 120 minutes we spent watching that third place play off game this afternoon.

No matter, its done now and with an actual proper prize to play for and some very good players on show, Portugal against Netherlands promises to be well worth our time on a Sunday night.

Kick off is a touch under 45 minutes away so shall we get some team news? Why not...

In a couple of hours history will be made.

That's because one of Portugal or the Netherlands will be crowned the inaugural winners of the Uefa Nations League.

It's the team ranked seventh in the world versus the team placed 16th.

It's Cristiano Ronaldo versus Virgil van Dijk.

And, hopefully, it's going to be a cracker.

It surely can't be any worse than England versus Switzerland anyway.
