West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think it was the right result. In the first 45 minutes, we started really well, we had good possession but we did not create many chances. We defended well and Brighton could not create chances. In the second half, I thought it was a good game for both teams."

On making five changes: "There are different reasons for making the changes. There are injuries and I was not happy with how we defended last week so I had to make changes. This week I thought we defended better."

On the importance of getting points: "It was important not to lose after last week. For the trust and team, two defeats in a row would have been very different. It’s important to not lose when you play away."

Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce: "I cant remember having a good afternoon coming back to Carrow Road. We didn't do enough to influence the game. We knew Norwich would be difficult - they play a certain way and romped home with the Championship.

On the first-half missed chances for Joelinton and Emil Krafth: "You're not at your best and had we scored that could have been a big turning point. That might have given us the belief we were were lacking.

On Joelinton's injury: "We can't know what's wrong with Joelinton. He's sore in the dressing room. Hopefully it's not too bad.

"Sometimes you get beat and you accept it. But the manner of it... we didn't do enough."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We made two big mistakes, they had two goals in 10 minutes and it's difficult to come back from that in this league.

"You're always chasing at 2-0 and it allows them to slow it down and kill the game a little bit.

"We kept trying, I felt John McGinn drove the game forward, he had a couple of chances in the first half and we got the goal through Douglas but we have to be better in possession and its a harsh lesson.

"Losing the game is harsh on us. We created chances but we have got to take them - they took their chances and we didn't.

"I'm not disappointed in the way we've played, I'm just disappointed in the results. Sometimes performances don't get results."

Liverpool

Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on his first Premier League start in 16 months: "The main thing is the three points for the team, whether I'm on the pitch or not. But on a personal level it is great to be back out there and contributing to a good solid performance.

"That's what you miss. I've been working hard to get back to this point, I've had iffy moments along the way, but I have to keep reminding myself it is a long journey back to where I want to be."

On his team's energy levels after winning the Uefa Super Cup on Wednesday: "There were moments in the game where we suffered and knew we had to improve. We knew we would come under the cosh and had to withstand that. But , despite playing 120 minutes and all the travel, we were never going to use that as an excuse.

"We had to turn up today and prove we were raring to go and I think we did that.

On having to dig in after Adrian's mistake gave Southampton hope: "I think we were in control of the game and then you concede a goal and momentum flips like that.

"It will happen from time to time and we managed to withstand that. You've got to ride your luck at times and it was really solid and a good three points."

Bournemouth

Bournemouth goalscorer Harry Wilson speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Obviously I'm delighted to start like that. As a team we pressed, we were a threat, the early goal helped us settle down and we were able to play our football.

"I was able to catch my shot well and watch it fly in. It's definitely going to help me. I wanted to start positively

"To get a goal early on definitely helped me and the lads were great with me."

Norwich City

Norwich manager Daniel Farke: "We delivered a great display out of this. We were good on many topics - without doubt a well deserved win.

"The first half was even more brilliant - we were like thunderstorms with many lightnings.

On Newcastle's missed chances in the first half: "Small things can change games. But to be honest no doubt we should be up at half time - we created so many chances and the game should have been done by then."

Bournemouth

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a big result for us today, we knew the importance, the game was still in the balance at half-time but more pleasing for us was the way we saw out the game after letting the lead slip last week.

"It was great to see we were creating chances, we were a threat. Aston Villa are a very good team, they have quality players but we managed to stay ahead. We defended the last 10-15 minutes really well."

On debutant Harry Wilson: "He looked like he fitted into the team, he was getting balls in between the lines. The Premier League is such a high level, it will be a very hard challenge but he's certainly started really well."

We possibly witnessed goal of the weekend (Mane), save of the weekend (Gunn), error of the weekend (Adrian) and miss of the weekend (Ings) all in one afternoon at Southampton.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Graham Potter: "I thought the performance was really good. We played better than we did last week but now we go forwards. I thought we were the better team after the first ten minutes. The level of football was really good but we know we can improve as well."

On the players response to going behind: "The players really responded to the goal being ruled out and then going behind.It was great from the players. It was slightly against the run of play to go behind but the great thing about these players is we always keep fighting."

On going forward in the season: "There is a long way to go but the signs are good. The points return looks good. The performances are the things we want to focus on and we will look to do that next week and going forwards."

Watford

Watford midfielder Etienne Capoue: "It wasn't better because zero points but we had the right attitude. Everyone was on the same page but the result did not come.

"We conceded an unlucky goal today and I don't think they did a lot of action against us. We were good defensively but we need to be clinical.

"If you want the three points you have to score."

Norwich City

Norwich boss Daniel Farke speaking to Match of the Day: Carrow Road was buzzing today. It was a brilliant afternoon for us, the atmosphere was great.

"Teemu Pukki was great today without any doubt. not only goals but the capability to link the play. I was especially pleased with the defence. Grant Hanley had an unlucky time at Liverpool but a great performance today.

Chelsea next? "Each game is big for us. We're underdogs in each of these games.

"We are exhausted and will have to analyse the game first."

Liverpool

Liverpool goalscorer Sadio Mane: "What a game, it was not an easy game but you have to expect a tough game like this at this stage of the season.

"After playing 120 minutes on Wednesday it was not easy and we know it would be difficult. It was not easy and it took us a little bit of time to get going.

"But we got the three points and I think we deserved it. Once we scored the first goal it was easier for us.

On scoring against his former club: "I'm sorry it is against my old team and sorry I have to score but I'm wearing a Liverpool shirt now. Southampton was a very good step for me, I have big respect for this club. It is an amazing place. I learned a lot here and they are very nice people. But it is part of football and you have to deal with it."

On a nervy finish for Liverpool after Adrian's error: "I was nervous because it wasn't over. We had another 10 minutes to go. it was tough for us and of course we expect that here. it can happen, it is part of football."

Brighton forward Leandro Trossard: "The goal which was ruled out, it was a nice strike. It's an odd situation - you cheer, the adrenaline comes up and it's bad luck that I couldn’t have the first but it was good that I could come back and score on my debut in the second half instead. It is my first goal, it has helped us to get equal."

Everton

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford: “I think it is a great result. A big grind I would say. We didn’t play the football we wanted but these games if you get the points that’s key.

“It is a full team effort from the front. We work had training all week. We are resilient. It is a great three points that gets us off and running at home."

Norwich hat-trick hero Teemu Pukki: "Three points was what we wanted today. The first hat-trick in England so I'm really happy. Good, good victory especially after the display last week.

"There are better players than in the Championship, but we are playing better football and the guys are creating chances - I could have scored more.

"My daughter will probably play with the match-ball. It will have a special place."
