Manuel Pellegrini added more 'oomph' to the attack and it seems to have done the trick.

Manuel Lanzini plays the ball to Javier Hernandez on the left who takes the ball into the area and shoots past the onrushing Mat Ryan, who appeared to get a knee and hand to the ball.

Not enough of a knee and hand.

  2. GOOD SAVE!published at 16:16 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Everton 1-0 Watford

    Ouch!

Jordan Pickford's head comes to the aid of Everton as the former Sunderland keeper rushes out of goal in an attempt to block Troy Deeney's shot.

Brave keeping from the England man because that was a certain equaliser.

    Aston Villa 0-2 Bournemouth

Nothing has really separated these two sides apart from the goals. Sounds daft, right? But it is Bournemouth who have taken their chances, despite Villa creating more.

Quick-thinking from the hosts at an attacking free-kick sets Jack Grealish off, the Villa skipper bending a good effort just past the right-hand post.

    Brighton 0-0 West Ham

Brighton's Leandro Trossard, him of 'disallowed goal; fame, tries another effort from inside the area but screws the shot wide.

  5. ''Be calm and settle into the game'published at 16:14 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

    Tony Pulis
Former Stoke and West Brom manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Southampton have just got to dig in now and see this one out. The first ten minutes, quarter of an hour in the second half, just be calm and settle back into the game and then hopefully get the opportunities they had in the first half, but this time take them.

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Che Adams has looked lively for Saints on his home debut as he gamely chases down another lost cause. But he's been feeding on scraps.

    Norwich 1-0 Newcastle

Teemu Pukki has got a taste for it.

He puts pressure on Magpies skipper Jamaal Lascelles but the defender stays in control.

Meanwhile, Joelinton is down on the turf on the edge of the Norwich penalty area.

    Hmmm...

Penalty? No! Villa think have a shout here when Trezeguet goes tumbling over Cherries keeper Aaron Ramsdale's leg... VAR disagrees.

Not a clear and obvious error from ref Martin Atkinson. On we go.

    Southampton 0-1 Liverpool

Oriol Romeu is smiling - but he doesn't find giving away a free-kick on the edge of the Saints box funny.

The Southampton midfielder is incredulous that he has been penalised for clumsily running into Joel Matip.

The free-kick is smashed into the wall, but Liverpool stay camped in the Saints half...

    Everton 1-0 Watford

Javi Gracia's lads have piled on the pressure early in this second period by winning three corners.

Sadly for them they didn't really trouble the home defence with any of them.

  11. KICK-OFFpublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Aston Villa 0-2 Bournemouth

Better late than never, eh? A slight delay at Villa Park as Bournemouth make a change. Phill Billing is brought off before he is sent off, with Eddie Howe sending Andrew Surman on in his place.

    Norwich 1-0 Newcastle

Newcastle are quick off the blocks.

The ball arrives at Matt Ritchie's feet, in a similar position from which he scored that corker against Bournemouth last season, but he pretty much plays a square pass with his attempt at a shot.

Sadio Mane looks to carry on where he left off, stretching the Saints defence with a run down the left. The hosts scramble back and avert the danger.

Tim Miller: This is the standard Southampton performance: play well, don't score, concede in first half injury time, go on to lose. So many goals where our players switch off. The mentality problem hasn't been fixed since Koeman left.

Nathan: Villa losing is my fault. I wasn't at home with my Villa scarf, with my Villa mug and my Villa beer tankard. But I am now. So predicting a 3-2 win.

Steve H: NUFC are already relegation fodder, this is an embarrassing performance against a newly promoted championship team, what an absolute shambles, the clubs a disgrace.

    Arsenal 2-1 Burnley

    Burnley

Sean Dyche on BT Sport, on diving: "I think people diving all over the place is ruining the game of football. Did you know you can only get a yellow card for diving? So every player can cheat once in a game. I don't think it is going to change, do you?"

On the handball against Ben Mee: "I have seen it well, the lad kicks his foot at it. Impossible hand ball. It was a tough one on Ben Mee. He is trying to move his arm out the way. We could have cleared, we had plenty of chances to get rid of the ball before the goal but it is disappointing when you get a decision like that."

    Arsenal 2-1 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche, speaking to Match of the Day: "I don’t feel hard done by. I think it was a very good performance. We used the ball wisely when we could. The second half they got more of a fold. They had a few chances, Pope made a superb save. Overall I am happy with the performance we really brought the game to them and made a number of chances."

On Ashley Barnes: "I am enjoying his performance. He deals with knocks really well. I have been pleased with the group, if we keep playing like that and we keep competing then we will get some rewards on the way."

  19. 'We need to improve'published at 15:59 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Arsenal 2-1 Burnley

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Unai Emery, speaking to Match of the Day: "Their game plan is strong, you need to adapt to the long ball and the second action. We didn’t control the game as much as we wanted."

On Arsenal's new signings: "I want to speak about the team, but for the first match [at home] it was good. It’s good for David [Luiz], for Pepe, for Dani [Ceballos], who are another step ahead.

"We need to improve. Each match is giving us a lot of information. I think we can do better. We lost some easy balls at times, but in general we can be proud of our first match here."

  20. 'We didn't impose our game plan like we wanted to'published at 15:58 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

    Arsenal 2-1 Burnley

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Unai Emery, speaking to BT Sport: "We are happy. We started with a win at home, which is important. We wanted to connect with our supporters here and create a big atmosphere.

"Their game plan is strong, clear and difficult to play against. We didn’t impose our game plan like we wanted to, but it’s difficult. There were very good things today - things to check and to improve - but we can be happy."
