Adam: Calm down people, 3 years away, 1st home game, almost a brand new squad. Whole season ahead of us! #avfc

James Pollard: Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone, Everton are winning early doors.

David Ljunggren: Joelinton appears to have all the footballing talent of a wardrobe - slow, clumsy, no acceleration, no positional strength and lackadaisical in defence. £40 million well spent I'd say...

Aston Villa finally start to find their feet a little.

Pressure from the home side sees John McGinn force a save from Aaron Ramsdale before Wesley sees a shot on the turn blocked.

Ol' Dan Burn was offside in the initial build-up.

Gutting for Trossard but the correct decision.

    Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

    Micah Richards
Former Aston Villa and Man City defender on Final Score

These Liverpool performances have carried on from pre-season. They look a bit leggy and vulnerable at times. There have been a couple of times where they should have got rid of the ball but they look a bit panicky. To be fair, they have been down to ten men. James Milner has just come back on the pitch after receiving treatment but it’s not a solid start for Liverpool.

    Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

We're back even. Liverpool skipper James Milner returns to the field with a bandage wrapped around his head after taking a whack earlier.

Milner's straight back into the thick of the action, heading away a dangerous ball into the away box.

So close to a response from the Hornets!!!

Jose Holebas swings in a corner that Craig Dawson, at the far stick, heads on to the woodwork, via the glove of Jordan Pickford.

    Aston Villa 0-2 Bournemouth

This almost turned into a Jonathan Woodgate-style debut for Villa's Douglas Luiz on his first start.

The Brazilian, who gave away possession for Bournemouth's second, shanks an attempted clearance... and is relieved to see it go out for a corner and not nestle in the top corner.

The Seagulls are just about on top here.

    Southampton 0-0 Liverpool

Southampton might have got a bit of pasting at Turf Moor last week, but they look much sharper today.

Another half chance for the hosts following a corner, Che Adams lurking at the far post to drill across the face of goal. Jannik Vestergaard and Maya Yoshida both stick out legs but need a bigger shoe size or two to reach it.

Give one of the relegation places to Watford already! Since beating Wolves in the cup semi last season they have been awful. Can't see them surviving this time.

Villa are playing out from the back. Don’t take too many risks. In the Championship you might get away with that but not in the Premier League. Bournemouth are a brilliant side to watch, they have exploited the weaknesses in Villa and they are looking really good.

    Harry Wilson

Another Villa mistake, another Bournemouth goal. The newly-promoted hosts are learning a harsh lesson here.

Douglas Luiz, signed for £15m from Manchester City, isn't as sharp as his bleached blond cornrows, stepping over a ball in his own half... with no team-mate behind him.

Bournemouth's new signing Harry Wilson picks up the ball and lets fly, finding the bottom corner with the help of a huge deflection off Villa centre-back Tyrone Mings.
