Paul Pogba had a second-half penalty saved as Manchester United were held to a Premier League draw at Wolves.

With the score 1-1 in the second half, the Frenchman was fouled by Conor Coady and got up to take the spot-kick, despite failing with three penalties last season and Marcus Rashford scoring from one against Chelsea on the opening weekend.

Pogba's powerful shot was pushed away by Rui Patricio, who saved low to his right.

In a first half containing just three shots, Anthony Martial had put United in front with his 50th goal for the club - a fine left-footed finish - only for Ruben Neves to level with a sensational strike from the edge of the area, which bounced down off the crossbar 10 minutes after the break.

Wolves' Raul Jimenez had flicked a header against the inside of a post just before Neves' effort but neither keeper was troubled after Pogba's miss.

You can't say 'I'll leave it down to the players'. I like Ole but that's weak management tonight.

Rashford may have missed as well but we'd have understood because he took the last one. He shouldn't be allowed to make that decision himself. It wouldn't be allowed under someone like Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Paul wanted to take it, it's that simple," says Rashford. "Anyone can miss a penalty, he has scored so many penalties and it is normal to miss one.

"It is simple, if you want to take it, you take it. I took one last week so for me it's no problem that he took it.

"It's unfortunate he didn't score but that's football. The confidence that you're going to score is always the same. We practice all week and we score the majority of them."

Manchester United

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford tells Sky Sports: "It is of course disappointing, disheartening, but we can't let it get to ourselves early in the season.

"The last time we came to the stadium they [Wolves] were the much better team, but today was a different story. It has always been a tough place to come and today proved it again.

"It was a different role, throughout the whole squad we can change roles and positions and for the goal it was overload on one side so it worked."

Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sky Sports, explaining why Paul Pogba took the penalty: "The two of them [Pogba and Marcus Rashford] are designated penalty takers, it's up to them there and then - 'this is mine'.

"Sometimes players just feel they are confident to score. Paul has scored so many for us and today it was a good save. You can see the slides on the Power Point [to prove they were both designated penalty takers].

"The two of them have been confident before. Marcus scored last week but Paul was also confident. I like players with confidence."

On Alexis Sanchez potentially moving to Inter Milan: "Let's see what happens in the coming few weeks. At the moment he is our player."

Wolves have now drawn both of their league games - although away at Leicester and at home to Manchester United is a pretty tricky start.

Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo had to wait before starting his press conference as the TVs in the media room were playing out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's TV interviews.

Nuno was brief - a couple of minutes - but he repeated his concerns about VAR.

He said: "What is worrying me is that we will be afraid to celebrate the goal. You cannot lose the energy. They have to find a solution for it. Please do it."

Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sky Sports: "We dominated possession, we get the first goal and second half we know they'll come out like a house on fire.

"They probably got the goal they deserve. I thought we took control again and could have won it.

"First half was a mature performance. Second half was a bit sloppy. We are improving. We are a young team who will learn, we learned on the pitch today.

"We get a penalty that normally would get us another two points, sometimes the keeper makes a good save."

Wolves

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo on Sky Sports: "It was good. First half Man Utd dominated. It was a big mountain to climb and it was fantastic work. The tempo, intensity, the pressure - very good work.

"They are such good players and pressed us very high and didn't allow us to get out. Second half we played more in the space and controlled he game.

"It was a big game of emotion and it is what Molineux enjoys."

On the VAR delay to confirm the Wolves goal: "I was hoping to stay happy. I don't know how they will solve it - it's the emotion, you celebrate a goal so much and then you stay in silence. Don't take that away from the people."

If he continues to impress like he did today and can work on his final delivery, with his electric pace Adama Traore could become one of the best wing-backs in the Premier League.

Wolves substitute Adama Traore, who impressed at right-wing back: "Every player in the team played good, what I tried to do was give my best.

"We had been working on a new position for me, now I play wing-back and I'm working every day to adapt and be the best I can be."

Andrew Morris: Ole missed a trick by turning to his subs too late. As much as this is on Pogba for missing the penalty (at least he didn't have the silly run up), Ole contributed by delaying using the resources he had available to him.

Matt BL: Denis Irwin used to take the penalties for Man Utd. Not because he won the penalty, not because he was the most famous player, not because he was the most expensive player, not because he was the best player overall. Just because he was best at taking penalties.

Josh Earl: Fairly pleased with our performance, though a bit disappointed not to win it, had chances to do so including the Pogba penalty. Wolves improved a lot in the second half though, and Ruben Neves is pure class and showed his brilliance once again.

Wolves goalscorer Ruben Neves tells Sky Sports: "Man United started really well in the game, we felt difficult to control the game but we adjusted in the second half and took some risks.

"They have a really good team, but it was a great effort from our team. I'm really happy for the goal and the result as we drew against a big team.

"You have to be patient [with VAR], fortunately this time they give us a goal. We did a great job in the second half.

"He [Rui Patricio] is a great goalkeeper and he has shown us that already."

Pogba's penalty record is not great but he's a confident boy and I'm sure he'll score the next one he gets.

I'm surprised Rashford didn't take it because as a striker, at Manchester City, they're fighting for the penalties. He'll take the next one I'm sure.

You feel it's two points dropped from United - Anthony Martial treading on the ball when he was through and the missed penalty.

It was a stunning goal from Ruben Neves but you feel that United should have won.

A very entertaining second half.

United had looked in complete control in the first half, with Wolves not having a shot on target and Anthony Martial giving the visitors a deserved lead.

But United could not find a second goal before the break and the half-time introduction of Adama Traore changed the game. Raul Jimenez hit the post for the hosts before Ruben Neves scored a wonderful goal from 22 yards out to equalise.

But the visitors had a chance to win it as Paul Pogba was fouled by Conor Coady, but Pogba's spot-kick was excellently saved by Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

A fine move, Paul Pogba rolls a Wolves defender and lays it off to Shaw, but he's not the man you want in this situation and the England defender shoots low and hard but straight at Rui Patricio.
