Summary

  • First ever Premier League meeting between sides

  1. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Leicester City

And at last Sheffield United have a shot. "Why not", thinks John Lundstram as he gets a bit of space a full 35 yards out. It's powerful, it's straight, it's high and it's over.

We are 18 minutes deep and so far it's the away side seeing the ball and having a dig, albeit a wayward dig...

  3. CLOSE!published at 17 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Leicester City

Not too much fluidity from Chris Wilder's side so far and John Egan sweeps a cross-field ball out of play. James Maddison is the main threat out there as he picks up such clever pockets of space.

In comes a cross from out wide from Youri Tielemans and Jamie Vardy should do better as he glances a header wide from 10 yards. He had the run on his man... chance.

These gents are having a fine old time. Sun out, maybe a few pints down, a pie perhaps and their beloved Blades in the big time. Take them to the discotheque and throw in a well-made kebab and that my friends is a jackpot day.

  5. Postpublished at 11 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Leicester City

England manager Gareth Southgate is in the stands; he may be watching James Maddison who glances a header wide from 14 yards. It was a clever flick-on and would have been something special had it gone in.

Temperatures were predicted to be at 28 degrees for kick-off. That may prevent some of the over-lapping runs of the Sheffield United central defenders as the recovery runs might finish them off.

  7. Postpublished at 9 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Leicester City

Leicester win a free-kick 35 yards out after James Maddison is hacked down. Christian Fuchs tries a spectacular effort from the dead ball but it dribbles wide.

So far the home fans haven't stopped singing. Enjoying themselves...

  9. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Leicester City

Classic Jamie Vardy as he lays a ball off for Ayoze Perez and then just races into the box for a cross. Vardy isn't the target and instead the ball is pulled back to Youri Tielemans on the edge of the box but he pulls an effort wide.

  10. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Leicester City

Oliver Norwood leaves a bit on Ayoze Perez on halfway but the free-kick awarded comes to nothing - careless stuff from Leicester. Nice feet by Callum Robinson on the touchline and Luke Freeman wins a Blades corner...

In it comes... in-swinger... it hits Robinson's chest and bounces off him to evade everyone in the box.

  11. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Sheffield United 0-0 Leicester City

Dean Henderson, in the home goal, is wearing a cap. He's at the end where the sun is a bit of a nuisance for a goalkeeper.

Aside from a Leicester shot from range, which was easily blocked, it's an even and scrappy start.

Sheffield United win a throw deep in the Leicester half but an Enda Stevens cross is booted clear.

They have been generating some terrific noise since about half an hour before kick-off. It might not be an easy place to come and win this season.

The sun beats down and the ball is rolling....

"Welcome to the home of football," says the man on the microphone at Bramall Lane.

Jamie Vardy's name is met with a huge boo given he supported Sheffield Wednesday as a kid.

Nothing like football for a true welcome.

Sheffield United v Leicester City (15:00 GMT)

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder on his side's good start to the season: "[My players] won't get carried away, it's as simple as that.

"They haven't done for three years so they certainly won't after two games in a different league.

"I've always kept my feet on the ground, I've never got ahead of myself.

"I think it's a dangerous game to do that whether you're a player, manager or a coach."

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers: "There are obviously elements we always want to improve on but early in the season, you want to build a base from the defensive perspective.

"We didn't give much away against Wolves and against Chelsea we were defensively strong.

"I have been pleased with parts of both games and now it's just about continuing how we performed against Chelsea in the final hour."

  16. A tall order for Blades...published at 14:57 British Summer Time 24 August 2019

Sheffield United v Leicester City (15:00 GMT)

    Alistair Mann
    MOTD commentator at Bramall Lane

Sheffield United's current standing as the only promoted side yet to be defeated is likely to be under serious threat if Leicester attain anything like the level of performance they found at Chelsea.

After a shaky start, the Foxes looked every bit a team who might just have an outside shot at a top-six finish; and it seemed a major disappointment that they only took away a point.

Having lost just one of their last 20 matches, the Blades will have the confidence to repel them.

But unlike last Sunday's opponents Crystal Palace, who rarely threatened, you can't envisage the likes of James Maddison and Jamie Vardy being quite as unimaginative.

Shout out to Ravel Morrison, who makes his first jump onto the bench for Sheffield United today. Identified as a huge talent by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, he's come here, aged 26, via West Ham, Birmingham, QPR, Cardiff, Lazio, Atlas in Mexico and Ostersunds in Sweden.

A man with good air miles.

Jamie Vardy has four match programmes to take home if he wishes. Maybe he'll stash one and sell three to add some weight to his Christmas kitty.
