With the warm temperatures and new team-mates still getting used to each other it still feels a touch like pre-season here.

To go straight from a meaningless match to what feels like the most important game of the season in the space of a week must feel odd.

Salford have looked assured so far on their EFL debut but haven't really threatened Stevenage.

    Salford 0-0 Stevenage

Salford captain Adam Rooney takes a boot to the face as he stoops to win a header.

The former Aberdeen striker seems to have a bee in his bonnet today, he's certainly fired up and in the faces of the Stevenage defence.

Play continues in his absence as he receives treatment off the field.

    Salford 0-0 Stevenage

There's no doubting Salford have started the more composed side, though as I say that ex-Rotherham man Richie Towell slices a wild shot over.

Despite the home side's big spending reputation, Stevenage themselves have made 11 additions this summer and the lack of cohesion is showing early on.

    Salford 0-0 Stevenage

What are Stevenage doing? It's obvious the hosts are going for a short corner but they leave themselves a defender light and the ball gets into the box.

But Ibou Touray's low shot is held by keeper Paul Farman.

The sun's out in the north-west, the pitch looks pristine and Salford co-owner Paul Scholes is in attendance.

All those things mean we're pretty much ready to go - both sets of players are about to emerge from the tunnel.

Salford in their home red strip and Stevenage, er, in their rather fetching black, red and yellow number.

Stevenage also have big-name involvement in their club.

World-renowned, Champions League-winning former Italy striker Gianluca Vialli is overseeing the part sale of the Hertfordshire side through a sports investment company he co-founded.

"At my age now, my excitement comes from the possibility of investing in clubs like this," the ex-Chelsea man said.

Salford v Stevenage - or as I'm now going to call it - Beckham v Vialli. Football is bonkers.

Salford's first ever EFL line-up contains two new signings, with midfielders Richie Towell and Martin Smith in for their competitive debuts.

Interestingly the hosts have only named six subs as they are yet to clarify the position of their academy with the EFL - all clubs must name a 'club-developed' player in their squad.

Stevenage only signed ex-Crystal Palace and Stoke midfielder Tom Soares on Friday but he starts, with Dean Parrett also named in midfield after rejoining the club this summer.

Salford XI: Neal, Wiseman, Touray, Piergianni, Maynard, Rooney, Towell, Shelton, Dieseruvwe, Pond, Smith

Stevenage XI: Farman, James-Wildin, Stokes, Cuthbert, Soares, Sonupe, Fielding, Vancooten, Iontton, Parrett, Guthrie

In case you somehow missed it, the EFL returned in style last night as Luton and Middlesbrough played out a barnstorming 3-3 Championship draw.

Luton's James Collins scored a late equaliser to deny Jonathan Woodgate a winning start as Boro boss.

There were wondergoals, missed penalties and late twists - if that's anything to go by we're in for a quite magnificent season.

To the naked eye the Salford City story seems a fairytale - a community club who have enjoyed a meteoric rise through the leagues - but this was not any ordinary non-league side.

In 2014 five former Manchester United team-mates - Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs - took control of the Ammies, investing heavily on and off the field. David Beckham joined them in January by purchasing a 10% stake.

For that reason Salford have become a team many lower league fans love to hate, with Gary Neville regularly taking to Twitter to vehemently defend the club.
