Almost a sensational goal from Rangers striker Jordan Hugill from a corner.

The on-loan West Ham man peels away from the penalty spot to control the set-piece delivery on the edge of the box on his chest.

He then pivots and volleys at goal, but his effort goes narrowly over the bar.

    Preston 1-0 Stoke

Not hard to see where Stoke have struggled so far this season.

When they lose the ball, they seem to be out of shape far too easily and Preston have time to run into space.

Josh Harrop wastes a good chance to hit the target from 30 yards out as he skews a shot well wide with his right foot.

    Charlton 0-0 Nottm Forest

The hosts go close again in south-east London. They have made a blistering start.

First Conor Gallagher brings the ball down in the box before seeing his close-range shot brilliantly save by Aro Muric.

Jonathan Leko then sees his effort blocked on the follow-up.

  4. Postpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 21 August 2019

    QPR 0-0 Swansea

Ebere Eze goes close for the R's at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium, pivoting with the ball and then running at Mike van der Hoorn.

The forward gets past the big Dutchman and then drags his left-footed effort across goal.

It could have been a cross rather than a shot, but there was no hooped shirt on the end of it.

  5. goal

GOAL: Preston 1-0 Stokepublished at 19:53 British Summer Time 21 August 2019

    Daniel Johnson (7 mins)

And despite that early Stoke pressure, it's Preston who take the lead with their first chance.

Daniel Johnson bundles it home on the half-volley from the edge of the area.

Didn't exactly catch it cleanly and Jack Butland certainly should have done better there for Stoke.

A couple of early chances for the Addicks at The Valley.

Visiting keeper Aro Muric saves a flicked effort from Jonathan Leko from an Erhun Oztumer corner.

Then Tom Lockyer heads a cross over the Forest bar.

    Preston 0-0 Stoke

Up and running at Deepdale where the early test is probably going to be for a few in the crowd trying to pick out the difference between both sides wearing their respective home shirts.

White against red and white stripes isn't the easiest to decipher in a defensive melee....

Meanwhile, an early Stoke corner to the back post is punched clear by Declan Rudd and then Tom Ince fires wide from the edge of the box for the visitors.

From the club that brought you 'Josh Murphy versus Jacob Murphy' Cardiff City are back this summer with another blockbuster sibling rivalry.

Cardiff's Leandro Bacuna starts and he could come up against his younger brother Juninho Bacuna, who is a substitute for the Terriers.

West Brom v Reading (20:00 BST)

    Slaven BilicImage source, Getty Images

The late game tonight comes at The Hawthorns, where Slaven Bilic will be aiming to keep up his unbeaten start as West Brom boss.

The Baggies are one of five teams to have taken seven points from their three games, with wins at Nottingham Forest and Luton adding to a draw at home to Millwall.

Albion finished last season strongly at home, winning their final six in all competitions, but lost at home to Millwall in the League Cup last week.

Reading secured their first victory last time out, beating Cardiff 3-0 as Romanian striker George Puscas scored a brace.

However, the Royals have only won two of their last 32 away from home in the Championship.

The Berkshire side also have midfielder Pele in their starting XI, but boss Jose Gomes could perhaps do with a Yashin, a Beckenbauer and a Cruyff in his team to improve their away form.

  12. Rangers host Swans taking flightpublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 21 August 2019

    QPR v Swansea (19:45 BST)

Queens Park Rangers started the season in fine fettle, emerging with a 2-1 victory from their opening-day assignment at Stoke.

Since then, Mark Warburton's side have drawn with Huddersfield and lost to Bristol City.

The R's return to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium without a win in their past four games at home in league and Cup.

Steve Cooper was a bit of a left-field appointment to replace Graham Potter as Swansea manager after the former Ostersunds boss upped sticks to Premier League Brighton.

But Welshman Cooper, who coached England Under-17s to World Cup triumph in 2017, has taken to management like a duck to water with two wins and a draw in the league.

The Swans somehow conspired to lose 4-0 at QPR in April - their heaviest league defeat of the season - but have since been unbeaten in nine matches in all competitions.

    Preston v Stoke (19:45 BST)

Preston and Stoke have taken four points between them from three games this season.

That is not the kind of form which will be troubling the play-off places, which both clubs have aspirations of reaching.

The Lilywhites have at least won a game: at home to Wigan, which was sandwiched in between defeats at Millwall and Swansea.

Stoke have one point from a 2-2 draw at Derby last time out, with Nathan Jones yet to get the side clicking since taking charge in January.

The Potters are bottom of the Championship, with their fans probably saying the league table is not worth looking at in the early weeks of the campaign.

  14. Bielsa's men in form as Jansson returnspublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 21 August 2019

    Leeds v Brentford (19:45 BST)

Pontus Jansson at Elland RoadImage source, Rex Features

Leeds United fans have had the opportunity to relive last season's play-off heartbreak by watching 'Take Us Home' - the Amazon Prime documentary on the Whites which was released last week.

Supporters of the Yorkshire club will be confident they won't be replaying those scenes come May, with Marcelo Bielsa's side making a fast start to the new campaign.

Striker Patrick Bamford has three goals from three games, stepping into the shoes of the departed Kemar Roofe.

Brentford lost on the opening day at home to Birmingham but have since picked up four points from two games.

Ollie Watkins is now leading the line in the space of Neal Maupay, who completed a £20m transfer to Brighton, while highly-rated forward Said Benrahma is working his way back from injury.

Centra-back Pontus Jansson returns to Elland Road following his summer transfer, and could be in for a bit of stick from the home crowd.

    Fulham v Millwall (19:45 BST)

    Scott ParkerImage source, Rex Features

Having five London sides in the Championship this season means you don't have to wait too long for a next derby to come along.

We have the first of 2019-20 this evening, as Millwall make the journey north of the Thames and west to Fulham.

Scott Parker's Whites lost at Barnsley on the opening day but have since bounced back to beat Blackburn and Huddersfield.

The Craven Cottage side were relegated from the Premier League last season and a push for the play-offs is the bottom end of their aspirations for this season.

Millwall boss Neil Harris had a bit of a clear-out this summer, and the summer cleaning has worked wonders so far.

The Lions are one of five teams still unbeaten, with seven points from their three games.

Fulham have won their last three games against Millwall, but lost all 10 derbies in the top flight last season.

  16. Addicks look to continue unbeaten recordpublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 21 August 2019

Charlton v Nottm Forest (19:45 BST)

    Lyle TaylorImage source, Rex Features

Charlton Athletic have been one of the surprise packages from the opening stages of the Championship season.

Lee Bowyer has thrown together a decent-looking squad despite working on a tight budget, and the Addicks have won two of their opening three in an unbeaten start, beating Blackburn and Stoke and salvaging a late draw at Barnsley.

With midfielder Beram Kayal and striker Tomer Hemed - both late signings from Brighton - yet to come into the side, the question is whether the south-east Londoners can continue their great start. Last season's top scorer Lyle Taylor is already up and running with three goals.

Nottingham Forest have been tipped to challenge for promotion and end their exile from the Premier League, which will be 21 years next summer.

Sabri Lamouchi is still bashing his somewhat bloated squad into shape, and has a win, a draw and a defeat from their opening three fixtures.

The Tricky Trees demolished Birmingham 3-0 last time out, so Forest fans could be getting excited that this could be their year.

Lots of potential "he's come back to haunt his old club," angles for us to enjoy at Cardiff City tonight.

Bluebird Lee Peltier might not be the likeliest goalscorer on the pitch, but Cardiff fans are probably already fearing what their former striker Frazier Campbell (pictured above) could do off the bench if he makes his Terriers debut.

And the whole match is a giant audition for Hudderfield caretaker boss Mark Hudson, himself a former Cardiff captain.

He makes three changes to his side while Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock has made four, handing a first league start to Lee Tomlin since December 2017.

We start our previews of tonight's games with Cardiff City against Huddersfield Town - two clubs who have both found life rather tricky since their respective relegations from the Premier League this summer.

The Bluebirds have suffered defeats on the road at Wigan and Reading - two teams who struggled last season - and needed a 96th minute winner to beat promoted Luton in their first home game of the new campaign.

The Terriers are doing even worse.

One point from their three games came at QPR, and boss Jan Siewert was sacked on Friday night after a 2-1 home defeat by Fulham.

The German won just one of his 19 games in charge at the John Smith's Stadium.

Former Huddersfield centre-back Mark Hudson is in caretaker charge tonight, with the 37-year-old coming up against the old sage himself, Neil Warnock.

Will it get worse for the Terriers before it gets better? At least Karlan Grant is in form, with three goals in three games.

  19. Parkinson 'deserves credit'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 21 August 2019

Phil Parkinson resigns as Bolton boss

Former Bolton manager Owen Coyle told BBC Radio Manchester:

"I'm saddened for both of them that the feel that that's what they've got to do. There's no doubt they've poured their heart and soul into the job.

"It's obviously been a culmination of everything that's happened in the recent past. It's not a knee-jerk reaction, it's something that's been building up for a long time.

"It's always sad when they feel that's their only recourse.

"There's been a lot of things that went against him and a lot of things he's had to deal with that ordinarily as a manager you don't.

"He deserves great credit for that and he's always conducted himself and tried to do the best by the football club."

  20. New leaders tonight?published at 19:19 British Summer Time 21 August 2019

How it stands at the top

I know it is still the first month of the season but here, for illustrative purposes, is how the table looks ahead of tonight's matches.

    Championship tableImage source, .

Any one of six sides could be the new leaders of the division this evening.

The teams from second-placed Leeds to Millwall in sixth are still unbeaten.

Fulham, in ninth, could go first if all those sides lose and they win by three goals.

I'm sure the top six will very different come May.... or will it?
